Sierra 4x4 info req'd
 

Hi All

I've got a '92 Sierra 4x4 estate to which I've fitted a standard 2wd gearbox , used the 4x4 clutch bits. The problem is the auto adjuster on the clutch pedal puts the biting point just as the pedal leaves the carpet making the 'box stiff to change sometimes. I've tried putting a block behind the release arm & forcing the pedal to adjust , but it just returns to it's original position after a few actuation's. Any ideas ? is the clutch cable the same length on the 2 & 4wd models ?

second question on the same car i'm having wheel offset issues on the front , wheels i've had on a previous Sierra rub the arches on this one , is the track width different on the front of a 4x4 to a standard 2wd ?

What gearbox do you have? what flywheel is fitted?
i have an mt75 hybrid in mine with a 2.9 flywheel and the clutch is fine.

4x4 front track is about 15 mm wider each side than standard or cosworth sierra's

Sorry i forgot to say it's a 2.0 DOHC , flywheel is original 4x4 one , but when i checked with ford the
y told me all flywheels for this model are the same .

is it the X member or the lower arms that make the track wider ?

Or is it the 4wd hubs that make the track wider ? in which case i could replace the struts with std ones ?

the ratchets are different.............. well they were on mine. the cables are different lengths but shouldn't make a real difference. the track is different.... to change the hubs, you need to change the struts , the tca's and possibly the anti roll bar............not forgetting that 4x4 discs are different to 2wd ones as well..

also what wheels and size of tyres, a lot need adjustment of the osf arch..:(

The ratchet parts are different so you need the one for he type of box you are fitting, it's the mechanical bit insiders pedal assembly so you need to pull the pedals out and replace whatever colour you have (red or yellow me thinks) to possibly a black or White one

As for the fronts, the 4wd cars have a totally different geometry so it's a case of changing the struts (thinner) the hubs (totally different offsets and fitments) tcas (pinch bolt to nut and through bolt) arbs (geometry) brakes (again offsets are different)

So what you really need is a full front end

If you are keeping the same xmember then you may have some issues as I'm not sure the width of th RCA holes is the same on the 4wd cars as well as the 2wd ones so that may cause another headache

Cross member is different too. Tca holes are moved slightly. Steering racks are different between 2 and 4wd to.

yep ratchet is red , so i need to change that then

I was thinking of changing the struts, brakes etc , but wasn'ty sure if the standard cross member will fit under the 4wd sump as its an odd shape ?

I was going to use 406pug steels with center caps , which i had om ,y previous 2wd sierra but the foul the arches a lot , so it,s on mondeo steels at the moment which clear no problems , which is ok but they look lost on the rear.

Also i plan on lowering it so want to get all this sorted before i get that far

what size tyres on the front??

was using the original 195/55x15s but whatever size tyre is put on would have fouled as the rims stuck out past the arch.

Might not be a problem as i've found hopefully a decent 2wd ghia estate for sale , so i might have solved all the problems in one go ! lol

Pug wheels are not a good offset for the front of a sierra anyway.
Mondeo may be too small an offset.
Are you after 15" steels

i've had pug 17"alloys at the rear that were fine, they were never going to fit the front........................... but the 15" steelies were ok on mine with 195 50 15's on but rubbed when giving abuse... 2wd car with 4x4 front set up lowered about 25mm


got a nice set of escos steelies for the next incarnation... :)

Thanks for your help people , you saved me a lot of wasted time & much swearing trying to sort that car out . Instead i went & bought a nice tidy '92 2.0 ghia estate with full leather & a years mot which is a much better base to work with.
The 4wd one was cheap , but had been nothing but a headache since i bought it , & thanks to all your info i didn't spend a fortune & lots of wasted time trying to sort it out.
I'm now going to break it & keep the good bits for my new purchase.

swap the rear beam and keep the lsd :)

is the diff unit a straight swap or is it a whole axle swap ?

Depends what is fitted. If there both 7" bolt on its a straight swap. It the new one has push in shafts then its a full axle.
