won't run!

ok so i have got the engine back in my s2 turbo now, completeley re built, but it wont run, it cranks over fine, just about fires up on its own but will only fire if given throttle, and wen it runs it misfires and and runs horrible, and wont idle, i have put fresh fuel in it, changed the fuel filter, changed the plugs, leads, coil, dizzy cap and rotor arm, but still no good, exactly the same, i have changed the metering head for one i know is good off a mates car but its exactly the same, have noticed its stinks of fuel from the exhaust and the plugs are black as anything, just cant get it to run sweet, any help wud be greatly appreciated, as its doing my head:wall:

cheers

i think so, got me thinking now, whats the best way of telling? if all the manuals are wrong then theres no point lookin there, its just doin my head in at the mo.

hello mate worth a try, but mine was like that when i put the engine in my car, i tried all the things you have and had the same result.... then i checked all vacuum hoses i found one split and i also checked all the plugs for the sensors in, on, under and all around the inlet manifold i had left one off and one was leaking air from the centre of the inlet but i didnt even have the sensor (85+vat from ford!!:wall:) so i blocked it with a sump plug from a vauxhall i think!! after that sweet as a nut, so i highly recommend double checking all hoses and wiring as its easy to overlook or forget the small little things!!!!

also make sure there is no fuel around injectors!! good luck mate:grin:

With the exhuast stinking of fuel, I would be double checking the cam timing first.
To determine what lead goes where is a doddle, take the cap off and put engine at tdc, not where rotor arm is, this will be pointing to number 1 cylinder, now operate the stater and see which way the dizzy turns, if say counter clockwise, then in the cap the corresponding leads would be cyl 1 at tdc, next one would be cyl 3 then cyl 4 then cyl 2, 99% of 4 cylinder engines fire 1342, a notable exception to this is the valencia engine as found in FWD fords which is 1243.
