Aftermarket ECU for ST170
Hi All,
I'm getting very lost and very confused (not unlike me) I need some help before purchasing an ECU for an ST170 engine. My project is to put the ST170 engine into a Mk5 Cortina. I have all the mechanical parts already but struggling with finding a suitable ECU. I'm looking at a Complete Microsquirt system for Ford Zetec/Duratec engine mainly for the price and I think it should do what I need. My question is, will the Megasquirt be ok running the Injectors, VVT and ignition? Thanks Michael |
Ask who ever is going to map it for you would be my advice.
I know there are loads of ST170 on emerald K3 and K6, as this runs all the different VVT arrangements perfectly, the VVT is deleted by some, but is well worth keeping as it can give some serious economy gains with no power loss. tabetha |
i have seen an st170 engine running on megasquirt making mega power. the vvt control on ms is on/off type, rather than progresive pwm signal. meaning its all down to the mapper to make it smooth when it kicks in, or it will be a surge of aprox 30bhp the moment the vvt switches on.
in simple words....ms will do fine. matt |
MS is ok if your looking to experiment with mapping it yourself
if your looking to get it mapped somewhere else then you should ask them because from what i've seen on here, a lot of tuner prefer not to map megasquirt |
In "simple" terms why suffer with lack of proper control of the VVT and loss of power/mpg etc when it's not in operation, like on a ms if you don't have to by using a different ecu that can control it 100% perfectly, giving the best of both worlds, like it was intended to do in the first place.

in my case ... money! find the cheapest aftermarket ecu that will have PWM output that varies on TPS and RPM, and its ALOT more expensive than an MS. Saying that, i totally agree. If money is no issue, then get something that will do the job correctly. .... . all of thisis kinda hyperthetical from me as ive got a normal 2.0 blacktop with no vvt now. :( Matt |

another option to control the vvt is a PWM controller off ebay for about 12 quid, these can also be used for idle control valves, or anything with PWM. It comes with a pot to set it, you could use a switch on the throttle or an output on the ecu to switch it on

Guys, there is a blokeo nthe megasquirt forum that has build a gadget that allows him to use VVT on his mazda MX5 and hooks into the MS ecu for adjustable VVT tuning...

The DTA S60 had a cam-pwm-signal for the vvt inlet and runs good an the st170.
