1998 escort 1.6 wont start

Hi im having a night mare with it:wall: I had the AA out they couldnt find the problem they said it was the fuse box also it wouldnt crank. Ive changed the fuse box now and fited a used ecu plus keys (inc red one) both with the same part numbers on and still no joy. Ive linked where the inhibitor relay was now i got it cranking, still no spark. Any ideas?

sounds like flywheel sensor to me

chip4x4 23-06-2010 03:18 PM

Just changed the flywheel sensor that didn't help. Just pluged the clock back in and the light doesn't go out when i turn the key in the ignition. Any ideas guys. Ive been without a motor for 2 weeks now:wall:

you still got the old ecu ? keys

i think the key reader will still be looking for the original key

no spark -----
works like this

from crank picup - ecu - coil pack -plugs

do you have a test meter ?

pani_k 23-06-2010 04:13 PM

PATS light constantly on whilst cranking?

chip4x4 23-06-2010 04:37 PM

Yes mate still have the old ecu and keys, only got 1 key for it and its not the red one. I changed the transponder that was with the ecu/lock kit i got.
i have an test meter not sure how to use it only know how to test for bad earths.

chip4x4 23-06-2010 04:42 PM

Just checked the light dont go out whilst cranking

xr3iturbo 23-06-2010 04:45 PM

if you put it on to ohms like a headphone shape symbol

follow the wire for the crank position sensor iirc it comes up near the rad there should be a conector that the wire comes into a 2 pin one

seperate the conector and put the test meter on the 2 pins thats going to the cps

then get some1 to turn over the car and you watch the meter see if it moves

see if you get a reading

basicly you have to work from 1st bit to last bit

why did you change the ecu?

pani_k 23-06-2010 05:11 PM

You sure you have no spark and not no fuel? Did the AA check this that you had fuel and ruled no spark?

chip4x4 23-06-2010 05:14 PM

i changed it cause the car died on me, this is what happend, i park up out side a job in front off my boss van left the car unlocked. my had to go out, jumped in car and wouldn't start the AA tryed allsorts of things, i got searching the web all the things pointed to Ecu not reading the key, changed the fusebox from a car im breaking, orderd an ecu kit through DN spares. Also just tryed to do an alarm test found out the electric windows aint working, think it might be a power fault to the fuse box.

chip4x4 23-06-2010 05:18 PM

defo no spark, also cant hear the fuel pump relay kicking in!

martysmartie 23-06-2010 06:05 PM

Check the PCM, and the main fuses in the engine fusebox, depending on where in Croydon you are I am willing to help you so long as my petrol is covered

Unless the PATS of old is different, iirc PATS kills the feed to the fuel pump so you have no fuel pump. But sounds like you have some electrical failure going on there. If you can't sort it then next step is to take it to an auto sparky.

if the pats light is on constantly and it wont crank, its the keys.

You cant just swap the ecu and then use the keys from the car the ecu came from. But not all is lost.#

Get in touch with an auto locksmith and just get him to reprogramme the keys. its just as if they will be 're matched' to the cars system. Tell him you have keys, they just need programming. I've been called out for this a few times

martysmartie 29-06-2010 12:45 PM

Just reread this and realized you say the PATS light is on was it on when it broke down? If this is the case then the key is not paired with the car, if you have swapped ECU and keys then there is no problem, (or you can just remove the transponder from one key and fit to another).

If you look at my post history there was a guy the other day with a RS2000 who had same problem, I said it was his key, he then got his key sorted out and it now runs!

In your case I would revert to the original ECU this should sort the immobiliser issue, the other things are probably separate simple issues.
