What's the temp like, is the coolant level alright? If it's running at high temp the termostat might be open, which would need replacing.

is the fan control aimed at the windscreen as i have heard this turns on the ac but doesnt light the button up and therefore will be putting the fan on...not sure how true that is though.

As said due to weather if blower is in position 3 this turns on AC hence the cooling fans as well, also as said if it's aimed at windscreen regardless of blower position. Faulty NTC (AKA CTS) will also as you say cause this. THe fans are not controlled by an antique rad switch rather by the ECU it gets the information on temperature from the NTC as does the temperature gauge so normally when they go faulty you will have a duff reading on gauge.
Normally if you pull connector off this registers a fault hence ECU swicthes fans ON and then when you plug back in this is cleared and fans go off. But check the heating controls first. If it was faulty you would notice it by the way the car drives I would of thought.

As I said above ^^ yes, if heat direction switch is in windscreen fans will be ON as is AC regardless of blower position, if blower is in position 3 fans will be ON regardless of heat direction control. These are indicated respectivaly by the orange colours on the control positions. The reason for fans being on is because AC is on, always drive out of these positions unless needed as they will decrease your fuel consumption and engine power.

Although fans will be on when cold or stationary with ac working they will go off once under way, where the switch postion doesn't cause this issue, it would indicate a major fault has been logged in the ecu, and is a safeguard, but doesn't need clearing just fault correcting then clears after a certain amount of cold starts.

What does the temp gauge say? Is it in the red or halfway. If it's not that then it's a thermo switch on the rad: http://www.fordownersclub.com/forums...constantly-on/ read this. Ford will have teh part number.

OP, I assume you have followed the advise in this thread? A common thing people do not understand is that the A/C is on when the direction control is set at the windscreen, thus the fan will be on as well.
Although a bad sensor could cause this, I don't think this is the problem, as you would have problems with driveability.
