the ones ive done have just pulled, try hitting it with a rubber mallet on the
boss, or just yank the thing with all your might !!!!!

leave the nut on a few thread's or you'll nock yer teeth out!!

just a case of pulling it. as for the barrel turn the ket to accesory setting 1 there's a hole on the underside of the barrel there's a little metal locking pin push that up and the barrel should just pull out..

once youve undone the nut, put the key in and turn round once to take the steering lock of,when ive done mine ive pushed on the top of the wheel and it tends to loosen it up, then you can pull it off

I'l try agin tomorrow maybe have some weetabix... On a maybe more serious note I have kind of misplaced my ign key, wasnt the best of moves but did kind of hope that I could change it with out is this possible?

neil andeRSon 13-04-2010 08:37 PM

not sure mate. the ket need's to be in position 1 before you can push the metal tab in. i suppose you could ram a screwdriver down the old barrel an try turning it??

Undo the 4 M8 nuts that support the outer steering column - 2 near the top, 2 about 8-10 inches further down. With these removed, the outer column, to which the steering lock is mounted, can slide towards you by about an inch (effectively, the making the inner column shorter) and you can then tilt the steering wheel, top towards you, to remove it from the lock teeth.

silly question but were u trying to remove the barrel in the first place by taking the wheel off?! cos u didnt have too lol. Just do what jon said, will be a bit of a pig getting the lock out without the key thou!! I have got a spare lock and barrel and i think the whole lock/barrel assembly somewhere should u need them!

I was changing the lock yea, I got it off prized the metal tab up with a small screwdriver and pulled on steering wheel as was doing it was a bit of a bi**h but done it now cheers for the info guys

Hi Guys, new to the forum but need to tap in on your vast knowledge. Does anyone have any pictures of how the steering column shaft bearings are assembled on a 1998 MK 4 escort. I have both lower plastic bushes and the upper white plastic bush and metal sleeve just need to know how it all goes together as it was in pieces when I got the car.
Many thanks
