yb engine
check the inside of the header tank for milky / scummy residue , if so might be the head gasket , if not could be valve stem oil seals or piston ring-s gone
piston rings can be checked with a comression tester on each cylinder, quite easly done but means a rebuild if there gone
and valve stem oil seals can be checked by whiping the cam cover off , if there still soft n maluable then there fine if there hard n brittel then they idealy need changeing and normaly means a head rebuild
some one else must have another few ideas

im not great with these engines but wouldnt the valve stem seals smoke on start up and piston rings smoke when driving and he has no smoke.
What grade oil you using ?
If you use 5w 40 or 0w 40 it will drink it....if you are try using the proper grade (10w 40) and it should be a lot better.....
they use oil for fun anyway, and all depends how hard you use it

The handbook says you can use up to 1 litre every 600 miles or so. Mine doesn't use that much - but it certainly needs a good top up every 1000 miles. It always has done and has never got any worse - it doesn't smoke at all so fook knows where it goes...
The YB engine has always been known to use a bit of oil in most cases and it had alot to do with what grade you used and also how hard you drove it!(Ford's from new put a sticker inside petrol cap saying check oil daily)
If it was burning you would be seeing smoke, when new Ford said the engine can consume upto 1.0 litre of oil every 600 miles, they always have been known for a appetite for oil. Expect the above figure to be higher now as thats when new. They do not suffer badly from stem seals, you can see though if you start up from cold you will see a blue smoke where the oil has got past into the cylinder also on overrun and then acclerating will show same thing.
