Default Turbocharged and Supercharged Engines - Is it the future?

I'm wondering if anyone on this forum has tried to supercharge and turbocharge an engine yet?

Before you all chip in, yes I know it was done on the Lancia S4 group B car

My current engine spec is quite special but I'm looking to supercharge the engine as well to make the engine more responsive and less lagggy off boost with a GT30 or GT35 (not decided yet)

I like the install of the powerworks Charger kit and would like to use this if it allows

Can this type of charger be fed boost from a turbo to compound charge it?

Will the seals allow it to be boosted?

These are the sorts of values you would expect from combining the two

I know a guy in the USA who has supercharged and turbocharged his Lotus Exige (toyota engine) and it drives and performs miles better than just the turbo alone, He uses a Magnus MP62 and a GT3076

Simon Norris in the UK runs a big BHP Evo and is currently developing a system for his engine too using a turbo and charger

Try speaking to Martin Hadland, as I am sure a long time ago he said he investigated this. Of course I could be wrong about that!

Interesting topic, not one I have any experience of yet though so Im looking forward to hearing from any people who have

I originally planned to supercharge my nova to go with the gt35, but TBH it just doesnt really need it as it revs so high ive got a useable RPM band despite the late spooling.

Ive seen one of them they are cool.

Isnt there a charger/turbo Golf on the market now? and there was going to be a smaller VW with a 1.4 'superturbo'

all the vw based brands have this, its a very tricky setup, though amazingly works very well, we use it for small engines big power, we can easily see over 200hp from our 1.4's

no reason when it wouldnt work with big power motors

The setup I was going to use on my nova was similar to the VW one, might still do it at some point "just because"

I was going to use a mini cooper charger and a TC flap from a V6 vectra, as they are both things I have lieing around anyway. Ive done all the piping with this setup in mind anyway, so would be pretty easy to add back into the plans at some point, although I think going to a larger charger may be required.

Other than a bit of drag to turn the charger, and another 20kg or whatever in weight, I cant really see any major downside to doing so.

Magnuson Superchargers in the USA can be boosted, they are a roots style charger

I sent them a mail to ask about it and they have a few customers compound charging them at the moment (possibly Simon Norris)?

The MP62 is a good choice for most

I did this to my MK1 fiesta cvh about 10 years ago, ran an eaton M62 rootes blower and st3 T3 turbo, the car had 12 psi boost at 1000 rpm running a combined total of 18 psi, had nitrous too, the supercharger was full time belt driven because i could not find an electromagnetic clutch capable of handling the torque to spin the supercharger at the time, removing the supercharger belt showed a peak power increase of 25 bhp on a back to back dyno pull but the gains down low far outweighed the peak losses when the belt was on, I also built the supercharged turbo'd 1.8 focus mentioned beforehand. chris

Do you have any pictures or dyno plots you could post up please?

How did the air flow through the system?

filter, turbo, superchargercharger, intercooler, throttle, engine?

Im sorry i dont because all the work was done when i worked at power engineering and they dont have that dyno anymore, the torque curve was very very flat though as you would expect and it made about 250 bhp and 240 lbs/ft torque but had around 160 lbs/ft at 2000 rpm!, my method was odd but it worked, the throttle was in the standard cvh position, the air filter was on the intake of the supercharger, the supercharger fed into the intake of the turbo with a "Y" piece in the pipework with an additional electronically controlled throttle flap, on the dyno the supercharger would becombe restrictive to the airflow demands of the turbo at around 4200 rpm, at that point the secondary throttle opened up electronically (ecu controlled for load, speed and throttle position) allowing the turbo to inhale more air, the transition was very smooth with no dip in boost, power or torque when the additional throttle flap was opened, this set up must use a recirculating dump valve because when the throttle shuts the air supplied by the supercharger has no where to go so the pipes would blow off!. chris
