S2 ERST gone bang?

On the way to my mates garage to check out the overheating problem when plooms of smoke starts coming from underneath the bonnet.

Cut a long story short got the car to his garage after it cutting out on me and we note there is no water in the expansion tank/rad. We removed the CAM cover and notice a press stud type metal object loose in the cover. We filled the expansion tank and the water is pissing out of the centre of a pulley where the round metal stud like thing has popped off?

Does anybody have any idea what this is its the pulley underneath the first cam pulley looking from the top of the engine bay and the water is just coming out of the centre of it. There is no oil in it and we checked the oil and there is no water in the oil either.

Will my engine be ruined? Warped cyl head? or can this stud be repressed into the pulley and the car tried?

well all you would get a picture of is a core plug, nothing else is wrong no holes in the block or anything like that - the oil is still a nice clean colour and hasnt mixed with the water.

answered ur own question then, sounds like a dodgy core plug

if it is a dodgy core plug though that still wouldnt cause the oil light to be coming on to indicate low pressure would it?
