Escort mk5 xr3i rad fan wont kick in ?

Im wondering what activates the fan switch is it the thermostat ?

24vcossiemat 13-09-2009 09:12 PM

temperature sender i think.

If there is no rad fan switch then it's likely ecu controlled, but I'm about 75% sure these are rad fan switched.

there will be a temperature switch for the rad, either on the rad or thermostat housing, can't remember which to be honest though.
just unplug the wire and bridge the connectors, switch engine on and if the fan turns on then it's a new switch you need, if not, then check fuse or wiring.

i think if there is a switch its mounted on the thermostat, the wires go from the fan to ehat imagine is the thermostat houseing wich also has wiring to it wich may contain a switch i dont no for sure.

scooter1980 14-09-2009 04:14 PM

allready bridged it but just at the fan wich is working how do i narrow it down to switch or thermostat cheers

xr2wishy 14-09-2009 04:55 PM

you bridged the wires at the fan?????
surely that won't do anything as the fan temp switch is what activates the circuit.

i'd run a couple of wires directly to the fan from the battery, then you know if the fan is faulty for certain, it'll spark a little, but don't panic, it's only 12v.

scooter1980 14-09-2009 04:58 PM

thats what i did the fan works m8

xr2wishy 14-09-2009 05:04 PM

ok, gotcha, did you test the fan switch too by bridging the two pins in the plug together?

scooter1980 14-09-2009 05:07 PM

no not yet is the switch the bit screwd to the engine do i need to take that plug off and bridge that one? cheers

it won't be into the block or head, should be in the thermostat housing on the side nearest gearbox.
some are plastic on zetecs and some alloy, it should have two chunkier cables going into it, just put a wire between the pins in the plug, then switch ignition to on.
fan should kick in then.
i'm assuming you've looked at your fuses already.

scooter1980 14-09-2009 05:22 PM

i put a pice of wire in each hole on top of the the plug on the alloy houseing and swiched ignition on and no fan,i have checked the fuses but i think the fuse box has had a few issiues in the past as ther is a few pick up wires been put in for the heater blowers n stuf m8,cheers

xr2wishy 14-09-2009 05:41 PM

run a test on the wires from th eloom to th eplug then, check that one is a live feed and one is an earth, if you don't get both, then the wiring is possibly to blame or the fuse box.

scooter1980 14-09-2009 05:49 PM

i only have a tester that you earth and then it lights up when you touch a live wire.does the engine have to be up to temp to test it as ive only a bit of power in the battery at the moment, even so ive just pulled the cap back off the houseing and neither pin is live with ignition on cheers.

xr2wishy 14-09-2009 06:01 PM

more than likely a problem with the fuse box then IMO

scooter1980 14-09-2009 06:04 PM

is there still a way to make a new circit from the battery with a fuse on it to test the switch as i dont want to go into the fuse box, cheers

xr2wishy 14-09-2009 06:37 PM

you can take a feed from the ignition live, use a relay though and then just go from there to the fan switch, then the fan, then to earth.
