Big round one that bolts to the diff.
Alternatively, strip the gears from the mainshaft and give me the number from under where 1st gear runs.
But probably best to leave the mainshaft together until you have a replacement ready to transfer everything across to
I'm off home now, but will try to get online tomorrow

I remember my first gearbox (and my last i might add) that i stripped down to have a look. Ended up getting really pissed off with it and got the crowbar out.
Needless to say i totally mauled it.
Stuck it all back together and stuck it on ebay

That's a late tooth pattern 3.82:1
I will be able to help you.
We only use new mainshafts in our Stage 1 and 2 boxes, so I can either sell you a new one, or I might have a used one that will be usable, provided you carry out a big bearing conversion, which does involve some machining to the casing.
You up for it?
Even if you fit a new mainshaft, I'd recommend the big bearing conversion.

If you were running a 1300 Fiesta, then it would probably go on for ever, but not in anything with a modicum of torque!
This is, however, why you'll find "recon" gearboxes at such low prices if you look around.
Somebody (no names, no packdrill) suggested the other day that at Ł450.00 +VAT, I was coining it big style with my Stage 1 boxes.
However, when you consider that every Stage 1 box gets a new mainshaft, new crownwheel, rebuilt VC including fresh fluid, all rebuilder parts, plus casing mods involving machining, etc.... I think it's a case of "you gets what you pays for"!

Adam, I'll get some prices together tomorrow at work.
If you're gonna do it, you might as well do it right.
In preparation, you will need to remove the bearing from the case that the mainshaft sits down into.
This will need machining out to a new diameter and depth, details of which I'll post tomorrow.

There is so many people out there quoting "Live mapping" who dont even own a fooking emulator or a "REAL" wideband fuel monitor it's fooking untrue.. yet they lie to the customer and quote Ł300ish and give ME a bad name when they did fook all but try different chips till one drive better than his original!!
Im sure, in fact i KNOW its the same in your business.. you do a PROPER recon, and replace anything dodgy, and then get undercut by some twat in a shed at home who just sprayed the gearbox case with a Jetwash then lied to the customer.. and YOU look expensive
Ooppss... rant over.. sorry

Adam, fair play to ya man!
I was going to strip my Gearbox myself aswell, I even bought the gaskets and new bearings too I then decided that it would do as it is and I'd fix it if it broke!
So basically you coud say i chickened out! LOL
Gearboxman I may well be speaking to you when my box inevitably gives up the ghost!

Just reading through
Was gonna take my fugged one apart but I dont think I'll bother now.
When I broke my box the options were simple.
Pay through the nose or do it myself...
Did it myself- removed the ABS, changed the turbo (dont ask) fitted poly bushes and a new clutch.
I had a recon 'box for 150 quid.. and well the next one I buy will be off Bernie... because it lasted 3 days.
I see you have a track day project going on Adam.. be interested to compare notes and the route you're going.
NUTS- Be in touch soon enough or see you at a show- fancy a trick back end soon I reckon.
Jake

Just out of curiosity, when fitting the 55x25x17.5 bearing, is it necessary to weld more material to the other side first, or is it enough to just machine the outer diameter? By the way, what was the outer diameter originally?

No welding is necessary.
The new bearing is actually 55x27.5x15, with the standard shaft being 27.5.
The original OD is (from memory as I'm at home) 52mm.
The bodge-up bearing is 52?x25x14?, which means you have to turn the mainshaft down to fit. That is where the trouble starts, i.e. the mainshaft snaps!
Re-conditioners use this method because it "gives a new life" to an otherwise fooked mainshaft.
Adam, any further progress?
