Ever fancied motorsport?
This year sees the Diamond Jubilee of the Stonehaven and District Motor Club (SDMC) and whilst the celebrations may be a bit more low key than the other Diamond Jubilee this year, they are likely to be at least as enthusiastic! As part of the celebrations, SDMC is organising a series of introductory afternoons to motorsport culminating in a Clubcross event to get new enthusiasts involved.
The SDMC was formed in 1952 when it catered mostly for two wheel enthusiasts, organising scrambles at Nether Wyndings, Grass Track Racing at Farrochie and Trials at Skatey Shore among others events. Over the years the emphasis has moved to four wheel events, and now organises a wide range of sports, including Autocross, Autotests, Navigational Road Rallies and Production Car Trials, as well as having members involved in Sprinting/Hill Climbs and Stage Rallying.
To try and encourage more newcomers to motorsport, SDMC will be holding a series of afternoon meetings where anybody who has an interest can come along and find out more. The idea is that newcomers can come along to find out more, talk to people who are actively involved with motorsport, look at some of the cars used and ask any questions. At the end of the series of meetings, for those who want to, there will be a Clubcross event organised with full safety facilities and to MSA regulations where newcomers can get their first taste of motorsport, but beware, you may well get hooked!
Like an Autocross, a Clubcross event is a race, against the clock, around a dirt or grass circuit but unlike a full Autocross only one car runs at a time. The minimum age for entering as a driver is only 14, so a good chance for the younger enthusiasts to become involved and actually have a go themselves. Basic safety equipment will be required for both cars and drivers, but any 2 wheel drive production car on road tyres is eligible.
The idea of holding these events is to encourage people into the sport. Motorsport has an image of being expensive and only for the elite few. Whilst this is certainly the case at the top levels like Formula 1, grass roots motorsport can be done very cheaply. Some can be done in a normal road car with no modifications required.
Interested? Well, come along to Coneyhatch (about 2 miles out of Stonehaven on the Netherley Road, follow the orange arrows to the Portacabin) on Sunday 22nd April at 2pm for the first of the Introduction to Motorsport meetings. There is no charge to attend, and full rules, regulations and safety issues will be covered at these meets. For the younger enthusiasts, we ask you bring your parent or guardian along, perhaps they will want to give it a go as well!
