WutangRS, been using my bargain Lidl electric sraper to remove the thick of the underseal then a grinder with wire brush attachment to remove the rest and take it down to bare metal so i can spot holes and remove rust etc
N1C4T3N, aye the shells not too bad, still plenty of work to be done tho, but its to be expected with a 22yr old car.
EvilFranky, damn right it will be, gonna be next year for that i think, will be ready in time for shows etc, deffo got to get to them next year as i never went anywhere this year

CraigW, yeah i was in bed, gutted cos i missed out on a full days graft and Simon popped round for a look
bought the engine from a bloke on ebay, but knowing that i could get a full zetec engine from a scrappy in the town for 100 quid, i wouldnt buy another one off ebay
this is it in the mondeo before it waas removed
pulled the head off
and as it was so shitty got it bead blasted. when it came back i ground all the valves in
and drilled and tapped the holes for the escort turbo manifold
stripped the bottom end and machined the rods to accept calibra turbo gudgeon pins, then pressed the pins and vauxhall pistons onto the rods
began rebuilding the block, new bearings, pumps, gaskets, bolts etc
pistons and pumps fitted... bottom end nearly complete
oil spray jets are awefully close to the piston skirt at bdc
2ltr block with 1.8 sump, all painted up to look nice
rover fuel rail modified by drilling and tapping new holes to allow fitment of the fiesta turbo fuel pressure regulator
rover m16 inlet manifold modified to accept fiesta turbo throttle body and idle speed control valve. just needs the flange that bolts to the head cutting off the other half of the manifold and a zetec flange welding on, rather than use an adaptor plate
trial build done mid way thru with a scrap rs turbo t3, just so i could see how it was gonna look
my t34 and the engine just about finished (not using the power steering bracket thats fitted in the last pic, as this was gonna be used when i was planning on putting the engine in my clio valver.)

yeah theyre nice rims, rather wide, they do suite the mk3
heres an update from today, didnt get much done as Tizer popped round for a look of the rs to see how she was coming along and was there all day chatting about cars n stuff.
He's rebuilding a red RS1600i at the moment, so i got a bit competition going on now
drivers side rear arch cleaned up
think i managed to get my moneys worth out of the last wire brush attachment
more pics to follow 2moro's graft

Coming along nicely,
Now that you have stripped it all down, if you decide to go back with the unseal, is that something you would do after the body shop has sprayed it, or is that something they would do? I've wondering this, my RSi needs restoring and I would probably prefer to have the unseal just because it is more durable, but was worried the unseal job wouldn't look like a good as the standard stuff before?
Keep up the good work

............
Personally having had an udersealed car I'd hammerite it so you can keep an eye on whats going on....and catch the tim worm if it starts again. Lovely, lovely project tho, will not handle great on 17's tho, i have a pal who did a bare metal rebuild on a 16i and fitted a zetec and he's been throughg the eye of a needle to get it to handle on 17's, must have had about 10 different combo's of wheels and suspension, back on 15" 3 door cos wheels now ....you can get those diamond cut 7 spokes in 16", they'll be much better.

AD-RS1600i the body shop can spray the underseal on for you i know what you mean about the underseal being more durable but i think im going to go with the hammerite as MattRS1600i says you can keep an eye on the tin worm, and catch it before it eats a big holes in your chassis
been thinking recently about the wheels situation and im beginning to come round to the idea that 15's would be nice, keep the standard look aswell as the handling, but i could be tempted to have them diamond cut or polished

had this air filter to turbo inlet pipe made at work yesterday
the bloody thing jumped out the lathe and got all chipped and marked, so will need to go back in for a bit of polishing also the taper needs to be slightly reworked so its a little more gradual, plenty time for that tho cheers for your handy work Hen, much appreciated
here she is fitted to the turbo
and with the air filter pushed on it gives me the space to route the water pipes from the thermostat to the radiator
these turned up today too, another bargain... 15 quid instead of PJG Graphics £45 list price
and finally for today this came in the post, a new ratchet set for the clutch pedal, gotta love ebay
