Default Mk5a XR3i Ford Escort cabriolet cosworth rep zetec turbo

I've bought this car which would have been a great car back in the 2000s, but has been neglected for quite a while I would've thought. I took some pictures of it when it was icy, but you get the idea. I'll pop them in the next post.

I think I may need to ask a lot of questions about getting things sorted and figured this would be a good place to get advice.

I've got 3 questions initially:
1). How do I get the aftermarket steering wheel/boss to stop scraping on the steering wheel column?
2). If a hood has been badly fitted is it quite straightforward to get it properly refitted so there's no gaps?
3). It looks like someone has jammed a large bolt in to hold the roof up on the passenger side front. Is this common and does it point to bigger problems that are being hidden?
4). How much roughly would brake lines cost fitted?
5). It has an alarm which is playing up by flashing the indicators for no reason on and off. What's the best way to get around this? I was thinking of a switch under the bonnet and flicking it off after driving it as I will only be driving one day a week so won't be a massive faff. Once I've got the bodywork sorted out (small cracks on rear quarter panels, cracked rear bumper and scuffs in a couple of places) I'll look at having a new alarm installed with turbo timer.
I posted a thread in escortevo but it's a lot quieter than it used to be!

Pretty rough overall and uncared for but I'm looking to bring it back to it's best. Hopefully I won't regret taking this on!

Yeah it's a modified M16 inlet that looks like it was from a Rover 820Ti from the research I've been doing.
Currently it takes about 20 minutes to start it, loads of white smoke out of the exhaust until it's warm and not running great.
I feel sorry for it lol!
I had thought about breaking it and scrapping but I'll see how I get on with the revival.

Was this recently?
Was the engine blown and smoking?

It has just been rebuilt by Essex Turbos and has a 24 month warranty so should all be fine.

I know there was an air leak which they sorted and was told that there was some oil in the intercooler that that would leave it a bit smoky but I've driven it a fair bit now (tanks worth of fuel) in all kinds of driving situations from full acceleration through to bimbling around so I would've hoped that the oil would've gone by now.
I'll give them a call on Monday and try to drop it off, but I was told it should be reliable once they had finished with it and smoke free so I'm hoping it's something simple. Was hoping you guys may help with troubleshooting ahead of dropping it off.

Forgot that I was told to run it for a while to get rid of all the oil in the intercooler and exhaust from the turbo before it was rebuilt..
Need to give it much more driving time to clear it away add there was a significant amount!
Silly me lol!
Once it's all clear and smoke free I'm going to get the rear bumper repaired and resprayed and have front end looked at to try and get better traction as it's pretty uncontrollable when you put your foot down and that's just with it set at 180bhp.

Quick update, bought a front grill in primer which I'll get painted and put on pending how everything goes.
Bought a new passenger side roof handle lock thing because the old one was held together with a massive bolt!
Bought a bit of shiny stuff for under the bonnet as planned to get rid of plastic which gets brittle and old quickly. Rocker cover, oil cap and washer cap.
Here's a picture, I also cleaned the houses and bits up a little.

The alarm problem is probably due to a faulty contact switch on the slam panel.
Try fitting a new one and the lights should stop flashing.

Quick update:
Had power steering pump replaced with a brand new one and new belt. Running like an absolute dream now.
Dove Motors did the work and was a spot on job as usual.
I've bought a new steering wheel, I went for the Momo millennium evo and planning to fit it this weekend.

The gear knob looked about 10 years old, was worn out grotty etc so bought a new Sumex one.
Probably not to anyone's taste and was a bit of fun, but it's new, clean and looks a darn sight better than the old one!

looks good and certainly better than I was expecting when opening the thread. Needs some cossie alloys to finish the outside off and might help with traction.

It used to have cossie wheels on it but it almost tore the bumpers off as it was too low.
Has to be 18s, I've seen the cossie rep ones but they are £1,000+ so think refurbing the Khan RS-S that are on there maybe in a lighter color would be the way to go.

I've changed the pipes on the oil breather as was recommended by a forum member, I may get a catch tank also and need another longer pipe to go around the back of the brake servo.
It leaked petrol out of the bottom of the oil breather when I disconnected it, is this normal??

I've bought some new alloys for it, they're 19 inch rather than 18 that is currently on there and they're not dark so may contrast well with the darker car. I'll post pictures up when I've collected them (or had them delivered) and put them on.

I bought them from eBay here:

Also since I've changed the oil breather it doesn't smell of petrol/oil in the cabin which I'm super pleased with. I used to smell strongly of it after going out for a drive, but not anymore!
