VW Golf GT TDI Sport Tidy Up
I've got an 08 VW Golf GT TDI Sport as my commuter car and so far, have been very happy with it. It regularly returns over 60MPG on a run and so far has ran faultlessly.
They are basically a diesel Golf GTI and comes as standard with the GTI big grille front bumper, hock style 17 inch alloys, rear privacy glass, smoked headlights, up rated suspension etc.
Had it for 12 months but the one thing I've always hated is the rear end. The front and side profile on these MKV's I love, but the back is so boring!
I thought about the 170BHP valance with the protruding exhaust, GTI maybe, but decided to go for an R32.
Managed to get hold of a genuine R32 rear bumper in the same colour and it happened to be on Gumtree 12 miles from work.
I also sourced a genuine R32 exhaust system for a bargain £60. I knew this would take some serious modification, however, upon test fitting, there's no way it can fit. Because of the R32 rear floorpan the spare wheel well gets in the way on the FWD car. I looked into cutting the top and and inch of the sidewall off the backbox down to the tops of the tailpipes and re welding it an inch lower. However, after taking some measurements off a mates genuine R32 the tailpipes would still sit 10/15mm lower than they should.
I also noted the standard backbox is actually in an ideal place and hight.
In the end, I came up with this.
After pricing up some tailpipes it was cheaper to use the genuine system as a donor and at least they are correct for the car.
Cut the tailpipes off the genuine system and sleeved them with some 2.5 stainless.
And welded them onto the original backbox as dummy tailpipes.
And number plates back on.
Much nicer looking car now.
I then turned my attention to the brakes. As with any car, they had started to look a bit rough.
Wire brushed them, decreased them and refinished them in silver high temp paint.

After
Next jobs are to de-badge the rear and machine polish this afternoon. Then think about sideskirts, have the wheels refinished and maybe a 10mm drop.
