Default Bens Mk2 Granada - new engine in...

Well this is the latest of my projects.

After Completing my Sierra Cosworth build last/this year I wanted something old but with a new power plant.

This is the base - a 2.0 Granada LX in white:

Size: 33.0 KB

I managed to find a full Granada sport trim including recaro's:

Size: 28.3 KB

And then whipped the old pinto and type 9 out and power washed the engine bay:

Size: 45.1 KB

Overall its a very clean and straight car. the only holes I can find are in the drivers inner wing/wing top and a hole under the spare wheel well.

I have also got a 2.8i front splitter and a rear spoiler to go on once the engine swap is sorted.

As for the engine and box, ill leave this here:

More to come.......

Your close with the Turbo - Its a 530d manual - had a very quick measure up and I think its good to go in.

Im debating what to do with the diff yet - if I end up needing the BM one then I think im going to use the later 530d as I think they came with an LSD.

I think maybe a bigger turbo, map, intercooler and exhaust for now. Maybe some bigger injectors if it needs some.

Only just got round to updating this from last weekend.

Well it was quite a productive Saturday.

The engine and box is now sat in and the rear gearbox mount is all fabricated and fitted.

The crossmember needed a little cutting:

Name: 20141122_112235_zps56dee7f4.jpg
Views: 236
Size: 43.5 KB

And the rear gearbox mount was more or less in line with the old type 9 mount:

Name: 20141122_112246_zpsd60a9248.jpg
Views: 257
Size: 44.6 KB

I used the old pinto rubber engine bobbins for the gearbox mounts:

Name: 20141122_145546_zpsf6f6f813.jpg
Views: 230
Size: 37.8 KB

Its a little tight at the back but the black bit is a cover that only needs a little notching:

Name: 20141122_150908_zpsecc1fffc.jpg
Views: 246
Size: 47.5 KB

And how it sits in the bay:

Name: 20141122_151513_zps237ab54e.jpg
Views: 320
Size: 43.8 KB

The only other couple of issues I came across was the housing for the old radiator needed trimming back so there was room to get a radiator in and the servo is hitting the air box on the side of the engine:

I don't know how to get round that - I might just cut into the airbox and get it plastic welded up to miss the servo. It would save a lot of work.

All in al though it fits really well, it misses the steering column and the bottom of the turbo doesn't foul anything.

I picked up 2 new Left hand engine mounts ready to make my own front engine mounts up tomorrow.

Excellent engine choice. Will go well and still be pretty economical, there's gunna be more and more diesel conversions.

More work done today:

Rear crossmember in place:

Name: 20141129_110120_zps3d8745f5.jpg
Views: 222
Size: 46.6 KB

New mounts for the engine - not cheap at Ł90 the pair! You can see the difference between the left and right old mounts - it was easier to use 2 left hand as they have threaded bits top and bottom so easier to make my own mounts up:

Name: 20141129_100641_zps2cf5b155.jpg
Views: 250
Size: 31.6 KB

Mounts fitted to crossmember and plates cut ready to make the mounts up: (the second holes are for the vac pipes to run through for the engine mounts)

Name: 20141129_100649_zps967870f5.jpg
Views: 249
Size: 35.9 KB

Name: 20141129_101130_zps9ab0c2d2.jpg
Views: 241
Size: 41.3 KB

Eventually ended up with this:

Right hand mount:

Name: 20141129_161220_zpsf840a4c8.jpg
Views: 218
Size: 42.3 KB

Left hand mount:

Name: 20141129_161230_zps5942c754.jpg
Views: 252
Size: 38.0 KB

Also sorted the servo issue out - trimmed the air box to fit it instead of going for a remote servo. Fits really well and its like the covers were designed for the brake pipes!

Name: 20141129_161242_zps7147857f.jpg
Views: 216
Size: 35.1 KB

The white bit is the air filter - that's close to the servo but iv found a pipercoss filter that tapers in at the end so should miss once iv bought and fitted that.

Name: 20141129_161256_zps0b38cbd0.jpg
Views: 260
Size: 34.2 KB

Next week ill be notching the front panel to fit the radiator in and the engine should be coming back out to finish the crossmember off and remove the old pinto mounts from it.

Ok, well iv not managed to get much done due to messing with a p38 range rover.

However, Iv made a start on getting the BMW radiator to fit along with the Diesel cooler and the BM header tank.

How the front crossmember started:

Name: 20141216_124733_zps978fa248.jpg
Views: 229
Size: 28.9 KB

With a little notching on the corners:

Name: 20141216_155644_zpsdd12e6a1.jpg
Views: 241
Size: 40.7 KB

Radiator fits nicely now and the header tank mounted:

Name: 20141216_155600_zps3d32c6d9.jpg
Views: 247
Size: 38.1 KB

Name: 20141216_155538_zps960a9561.jpg
Views: 227
Size: 45.0 KB

Diesel cooler fitted behind the grill:

Name: 20141217_114954_zpsa2a753a9.jpg
Views: 243
Size: 44.9 KB

Name: 20141217_115007_zps2680205b.jpg
Views: 250
Size: 36.5 KB

And iv been fettling the BMW clocks to fit in the Granada housing. Needs a bit more work but nearly there:

Name: 20141217_152615_zps2d094cab.jpg
Views: 278
Size: 48.2 KB

Iv just ordered a 550x200 bar and plate intercooler to fit next so Im just waiting for it to arrive.

More updates soon!

Basically I sat down with the full bmw car and engine loom and traced all the Ecu, clocks and transponder box wires out and trimmed the loom back until I had all the essentials I neded. There isn't much wiring to get the engine running however the engine can still be immobilised by removing the bmw key with the transponder in. Just a but of added security.

I'll be down with the car over the weekend so I'll get a video if I can. Plus Iv had the gear selector shortened so that's ready to fit too,

The only part I'm struggling on is sorting a speedo out as the bmw used the abs signal but the Granada obviously doesn't have it.

Wow, Iv not updated this for ages but it's not far off complete now and just waiting on painting. Iv put the original ford clocks back in now and got everything working bar the speedo but I'll just use my phone for that. It now has rota rm200 wheels in 18x9.5 all round and new -2" springs and shortened dampers from gaz.
