Default Ford Puma Cup Race car build

Ok so heres my project its a Xreg 2000 1.7 ford puma 108600 miles full service history from new with all cambelt changes and a wallet full of receipts and old mot's. I will be converting it into a puma cup race car over the next few months. I bought it a couple of days ago its a little rough round the edges(rear wheel arches) but nothing that cannot be sorted. Heres a few pics of the car....

Annoyingly the car has started with a slight knocking yesterday on startup its not too loud and the car sounds fine on revs so Im going to give her a full service with the correct oil first and see if it clears up. If not Ill rebuild it or build another engine for the car.

The car will be going to EMC motorsport in january for a full rollcage fitting and painting inside and out.

Heres the plans for the car.

Painted in Riviera blue or olympic blue
Full Cage
Bucket seat harnesses
Race Wheel
Full GAZ coilover puma cup suspension
Polybushed rear
Superchipped sealed ECU
Fitting of all cut off switches
Battery relocated in FIA battery box to boot.
Puma cup manifold and exhaust
Wheels painted black and dunlop semi slicks fitted.
Possibly other extras such as carbon door cards etc but I will see how much funds allow.

The car came with air con and heated screen so ill be removing the air con and the heater matrix and just running the heated screen. I will also be stripping off the suspension painting the underside with underseal then replacing lower arms etc. progress maybe slow initially but hopefully I can kick it up a notch in the new year. Plans are to have it out testing late next year with a view to doing a few rounds in 2016. This is my first race car project so it will be an experience along the way but I enjoy building things so should be a lot of fun too. The stripping of the interior starts on monday to get her ready for EMC after christmas.

Thanks for reading.

Cool matey. I love my little Pooma. Ive done a few mods to mine like 2ltr mondeo throttle body with modified inlet mani. Its also got a cone filter with a good cold air feed.

Ive fitted mk3 mondeo brake calipers and ST170 discs. Its got 20mm spacers on the rear. Im also in the process of fitting a pair of bucket seats.

Considering breaking my project car and buying one of these as a fast road/track car. Just don't think you can get better bang for your buck.

On the back I used spacers that go between the axle and the stub axle. I replace the standard bolts with longer ones.

Stick hub centric spacers on the front and axle spacers on the rear, Iirc puma cup allows for the maximum of 20.5mm on rear spacers can't remember what fronts were...

I was just going to use spacers on the rear as that's what the regs say. Although on Facebook it said the green car the puma cup guys built had 20mm all round so I need to clarify this.

Suspension
The suspension must be replaced with a Puma Cup suspension kit; the springs and spring rates are free. The rear beam bushes must be replaced with a Puma Cup bush kit. The Puma Cup anti roll bar bush is optional and the anti roll bar must remain standard. Rear axle spacers may be fitted up to a maximum thickness of 20.5mm.

The regs anit 100% tbh, one place thay have somethings others thay don't but all official....

And yeah ive seen more than a few run 20mms up front to...

well bit of an update today I came across a lad stripping a puma yesterday so I had some parts off of it got two wings bonnet front and rear bumpers rear hatch headlights and a full set of alloys with tires all in decent nick they will be good to have as spares incase of any mishaps although I may sell the hatch as I dont think ill need that.I tried to save the rest of the shell as well as I thought I may be able to rebuild it into a daily driver but it was just too far gone with the dreaded rot. If anyones after an engine and gearbox though with 90k on it and running really well send me a pm and ill pass on his details.

after stripping the green car out I was offered a silver puma thunder for a bargain price so as I had just sold my mondeo st220 I decided I may as well have a puma as a road car and with the green one still having mot I thought the best option would be to use the silver one as my race car build so I bought this...

the body looked great apart from some accident damage to the drivers side rear wheel arch which was rusty anyway. I took the leather interior out of the thunder and put it into my green one which I am now using as my daily. I stripped the thunder completely ready for its trip to EMC Motorsport in birmingham for the roll cage fitting.

I then rented a transporter for the day and delivered the car to EMC.

While the car was away I ordered a few parts for when I got it back.

Got myself a motamec steering wheel plus OMP boss
GP Race Pro Light bucket seat
TRS 6 point Harnesses in orange.
Aero Catch Bonnet pins
Boot retaining pins.
Electrical Cut off switches
Sticker kit for the cut off tow etc.
Tow Straps.
and I also picked up a rear beam which I will be stripping down and rebuilding with new parts.

well about a week into EMC having the car I got a nightmare call that when they were stripping the sound deadening off of the floor the floor was rotten underneath now I checked what I could of the floor before I took the car and knew it needed some patching but unfortunately the shell was just too far gone to be worth repairing. Now the original plan was for me to buy a 1.6 puma off of EMC and transplant all of the 1.7 running gear from the rotten thunder into the 1.6 but while my car was being built another car which was a bit further along was also at EMC unfortunately for the owner he no longer had the budget to complete the car so I got a call asking if I wanted to buy it.

Heres a few pics its a medium steel blue car very little rust at all.

I am now waiting for the paint to be done so I can collect the car and fit the pile of parts I have for it in the garage. I should be able to get somewhere near pretty quickly with the only major expense now being the the GAZ suspension kit that Ill need to save up a bit of money for. The car is going to be blue and orange I will be using the thunder alloys and respraying them bright orange.

Hi glenn have you checked out the puma owners group on facebook? You will pick up a set of headlights on there no problems. I know a couple of lads in west yorkshire breaking cars if not and can ask them.

The car now has a full multipoint custom cages roll cage welded in has had all the rust repaired and a full respray inside and out. I also kept the wheels off of the scrapped thunder as well.

sunday I started doing a bit on the car unfortunately the weather was awful though and I only ended up getting the steering wheel fit before It chucked it down. So I put the car away and ordered the materials to make my door cards instead.

Thanks the colour was the thing I was most nervous about especially after I saw the work in progress pics Id ordered a can of it and sprayed some samples but they had come out a bit darker so until I collected the car I still wasn't sure what it would look like. I was very happy when I saw it for the first time on saturday came out exactly as I had wanted.I was trying to get the colour close to a mk1 escort I used to own and I think its pretty much perfect.
