Default Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature

Hi i now a lot of people dislike these but here is my Ford probe 2.5. Apparently there are very few left on the road (less than 500 24Vs anyways so thought it would be worthwhile buying.

I sold this car 8 years ago but recently bought it back (it was far from as good as when it was sold). It is looking sorry for itself, the engine bay was like a salty corroded mess rather than mirror polished from being in scotland and it had no mot or tax on it).

It has a japanese import KLZE engine (200bhp) rather than the UK KLDE engine (165bhp) and was dynoed at 193 bhp at the wheels with UK ecu when i had it but i dont think the VRIS system was working right.

ive just bought some RX8 wheels for it as i want to run some mazda 6 brakes and the the 16" wheels wont fit over these. Also bought an ECU that will change the VRIS inlet switching points so that they are correct for this engine so that should give me a little more.

Cambelt was done last week, got to change a rear brake caliper and then it should be road legal.

current Setup:

lowered 30mm
KLZE MX6 Engine
Uprated fuel pressure reg (not the one shown).
stainless system
6 branch manifold
Induction kit
black samco hoses
magnecor leads
Grey Leather interior
Amber driving lamps (the lower ones that look like fog lights)
mesh grills

Ive got some EU rear lights (symmetrical reverse lamps - no fog)

The first thing to do was restore the engine bay so i have lots of powder coatings to fit:

vapour blasted fuel rails:

crinkle black rocker covers and inlet:

will probably polish the mazda writing i think.

Got some of it back together but still all the little brackets left to fit:

Redoing all the vacuum system and fitting this back together wasn't the easiest of jobs but definately worthwhile.

It really needs some paint to make it look right again so this is the next plan and i know of some coilovers so they would be good.

I bought another black one for parts with black leather and a boot spoiler but not sure what to do with it yet. I fancy a cossie floor pan and RWD on that one but that will be a long term project i guess and i have too many other projects to do first.

Very nice, I always liked these but when I asked about insurance they wanted trackers fitted so I bought a Cougar instead.

Been buying some more bits:

Mustang splitter for both cars

Black american spec headlights (no infill between bumper and flip up lid)
The entire mechanisms, tops and plastic surrounds etc. are different. see difference:

Amber fog lights - brand new euro stock

USA spec mirrors

Daiyama 2 way adjustable coilovers. like below but i found a used set:

Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature-mjiawys.jpg

Final piece of the puzzle have been ordered

Eta Beta Aviors 18"

they should arrive this week fresh from refurb. Just need to get some tyres on, fit the coilovers and see how low we can go

Well yesterday i made a bit more progress.

Removed the rear arch trims and all was good thankfully and solid. Slight bubbling starting one one arch but only surface.

Fitted the mustang splitter and the Amber driving lamps too. Also gave it its first clean in many years:

The splitter was not the easiest to fit but i think it turned out ok.

I'm hoping the wheels will fit Ok. The rear are quite wide so may have to put some smaller lips and a bit of tyre stretch on them if i struggle too much.

Still waiting for rear bumper and mirrors to come back from paint though

this happened over the weekend:

Fitting the black leather interior from the doner car. Just waiting for the black dash which should be here next weekend

And swapped the bootlid over from the doner car as it had a spoiler

What model/year mustang was the splitter off?

Just a word of advice. Stretched tyres are a MOT failure.
Along with the wheel rim showing.

Tyres will be fine. Pretty much all my cars run a bit of stretch but haven't got anything excessive.

Its a mach 3 splitter from about 99 i think.

If you search american ebay they list them for a probe and mustang

Great seeing this. We had a 16v black Probe ('94 M reg) from '98 until 2006. Only needed a recon dizzi plus the usual service parts over about 40,000. Paid Ł5,500 and sold it on ebay for Ł450.

Did look for another a few years back but they all seem to have vanished now. Last one I saw on the road was in Spain.

Your V24 looks like it's going to be 'just right' as Goldilocks would say. Hope those wheels don't spoil it.

Never understood why they were not more loved in the UK. Nothing wrong with them in my mind; well built, loads of features as standard that even 2016 cars don't have, cheap to run, plenty of room inside, big boot and sports car looks. The only area to rust on ours was the sun roof. Couldn't say that about most '90s Fords.

Unfortunately not the sierra shell had a kink in the front chassis leg and another in the floor behind the B-pillar which were not obvious until it got stripped.

The probe shell had also been repaired in the back corner by the looks of it as was rotting out onto the sill.

Will probably park this idea for a while. I'm out of the country till end of the year so i think progress will be slow now anyways

nice to see this, I find the Probe is one of those cars that you forget about, but when you see them think, they are quite cool

Been a busy few days

Got to drop the car lower but worried the coilovers wont be right for it and will have to go on air.

Going to buy some USA rear lights to get rid of the amber and have the tinted reverse lamps.
Currently running a german light to make it symmetrical

New OEM mats which may fit a bit weird with our peddles but will see what happens - they look like they have potential:

OK bit of an update,

I bought another car with less miles, better paint and a hybrid engine of the UK spec and Japanese spec meaning it runs the same power 226 bhp (just over 200 at the wheels) but the compression is lower so in theory it can take boost.

Here is the spec sheet from when i bought it:

Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature-0p8j3ag.jpg

It has a few mods which are not to my taste so will sort those out, Ive swapped over the wheels, fitted the new rear lights and will be buying a black interior to replace the grey leather (even though its the best condition one ive seen).

Some more pics below of before:

Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature-7dkqky8.jpg

Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature-1swoykw.jpg

Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature-efuymfd.jpg

I wasnt a fan of the carbon wrapped vented bonnet or rear lights so they have been removed and netted me a fair bit of cash back, also swapped rear bumpers with the original car. I also had to drop two tyre sizes but i still get rubbing on the rear so will need to roll the arches:

Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature-tdd0qqt.jpg

Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature-dzjqnxw.jpg

Ford Probe 24V - fast ford mag feature-bkjz6qp.jpg

This car does go really well, future plans:
Debadge and remove the front plate off the bumper
lower it - probably have to go air i think as I'm not having much luck with the coilovers
fit my spare mustang splitter
change interior to black
swap to stock steering wheel and clocks

I will probably keep the original car for a bit longer once i get it on the road but may sell it once complete.

The KLZE motor as per my original car made 197bhp and 193bhp at the wheels when dynoed.

Spec was as follows:

6 branch and stainless system
Fuel pressure regulator
KLDE ECU so VRIS switching points were not correct
63mm throttle body
Induction kit
Bigger ignition leads

I now have a chipped ecu for this to run the VRIS points correctly.

The New car spec is listed above but also has a number of unknown mods as when motor was stripped down to install the KLZE cams etc but I'm pretty sure its all ported and polished and who knows what. It was set up by Well Lane Turbo Center and has lots of dyno print outs in its 2 A4 lever arch files of documentation so it is a genuine figure stated above. There are engineering drawings for every custom part of this car. The original builder documented lots and lots of things. The VRIS points on this car are set with MSD window switches.

Ive seen somewhere that if you simply add the KLZE inlet and cams to a KLDE the best you can hope for is 10 to 15 bhp so it must have a lot of other bits fettled.

The compression of the KLZE is 10:1. The KLDE (KL03) is 9.2:1.
The HP rating for the ZE is 200hp@6500rpm. The KLDE is 164hp @ 6000rpm('93 only), 164hp @ 5600rpm ('94-97).

The torque for the ZE is 160ft/lbs @ 5000rpm (Have heard 180). The DE is 156ft/lbs@ 4000 ('93only), 160ft/lbs @ 4800 ('94-97).

The interesting thing about the ZE and DE torque # are that they are almost the same. What you don't see by looking at the numbers is that the peak torque of the ZE holds out longer.

As I was rescrolling down your thread I was going to comment about removing the rear wiper so glad to see thats done, smartens up the rear end.

Your fiesta looks sweet as well, like the rims.

Had to get the rims redone as someone chromed the lips and they lasted all of 5 mins before peeling off, the corrosion was so bad it made them impossible to be repolished so had to be powder coated and i hate chrome powder coat so changed them up a little, In the sunshine they look really mad

Suspension needs to settle from jacking it up. Might be up for sale soon

Looking good, wheel color suits it

Shame you have to sell, I was going to suggest seeing what the indicators looked like in orange (seen a few saph's with orange on black and it looks smart)
