Escort RS Cosworth The Big Tidy Up! (Update with Pics, finished if no T4 Around)
#163
anyway head is off and yep theres plenty of damage! unfortunately the head looks mre trashed than the bottom end, there appears to be no scoring on the bores but plenty of damage to the piston. there are det marks on a couple of other pistons so obviously not been set up right for a while.
Pics of the damage....
so the bit that i dont want (205 block) will probably go again! hopefully crank is ok which is quite possible so other than that the rest is scrap!
not good news and time to start building, definitely going to go 4x4 now too so once i know what the engine is going to set me back im going to start collecting bits. in the mean time im stripping off what i can getting ready for 4x4 bits.
Goos news is it has an alloy crossmember too so wont need to change that, its kind of a bodged 2wd conversion anyway! loom is fucked too so will find a 4x4 one of them. at least ill make the car so much better this way!

Sell that Bentley and buy the 40 grand 1000bhp engine in performance ford lol!
But on a serious note gutted for you but I'm sure it will be bigger and better

nah on a serious note thanks mate, im sure it will be, this way the bay can be sorted properly and everything else, lots of issues found and the loom really is a joke, so that is high on the list of things to get.

Shite news matey. But like you say you can build the engine up to a good spec now.
Bloody cars matey. When I used to work on Alfa Romeos I used to do a lot of engine jobs on them cause they would drop the valve heads and they would rattle about and fook the bores and pistons.

so, ive sorted engine, gearbox both diffs, all props complete rear end front driveshafts so on and so on etc etc.
all will be here tomorrow.
A decision needs to be made though, of course i could just wack all this in, get it all set up properly and have 330hp and the car the way it should be.
however im getting that bug again and wanting to go big, that will obviously be something that would need to happen over time but i don see the point in putting the engine in yet if im going to do that.
i also can only put the engine in from below in one lump really so im going to have a garage full of bits with nothing to do to it.
seems to be all i think about at the moment! what a saddo!

nah its fine, I will replace bit by bit, I just want to get it how it should be for a start if you get what i mean.
once im there with it and its a really good tidy example that im a lot more pleased with then ill look to do big upgrades.
i think thats why im swaying to just tidy it all up and put the 4x4 engine and drivetrain in it. get it all tidy and driving nice and how it should be at around 350hp and then save up and hit it in one go. at least that way t can actually drive into the tuner and not just arrive on a pallet as such!

I'm going to be cleaning up and painting everything anyway. I think I've decided I'm going to build it up with the standardish engine really clean and get it nice and how it should be.
Then I'm going to get it mapped and run it while I get some money back around me and then go bigger and better.

As soon as it drives again I'm going to get the underside tidied up too, the jacking points are shocking! So many are though.

Yes mate that would be nice, your help if you ever fancy it would be appreciated if you can tear yourself away from the family lol.

I don't mind giving you a hand m8, I'm sure some chocolate for the misses will convince her to let me out lol

Right, Ive ordered all my braiding for the loom and heat shrink to protect the wiring as looking at the state of the old loom i really want to protect this one properly.
The genuine good condition 4x4 loom will be with me shortly.
im going to start to build the engine up on the floor soon, and getwash the bay. while its all out im thinking of a few upgrades, im going to replace all the pulleys on the front, tidy up and paint everything.
im thinking of engine spec, the engine has clearly been rebuilt at some point but will take bottom end as standard, and head (according to advert) has been ported and polished, i will inspect soon.
now im thinking of using an inlet spacer, (any real advantage?) or maybe even an airtec inlet.
i think im going to stick with T34 for now but really push it as hard as poss so i suppose siemens 55s are the injector to go for and get rid of the greys.
should i stay stock cams or upgrade inlet cam? is there any need with just using t34?

Ask me a question!

Why the 4x4 loom to start with? Has more wiring than you will need built in, extra plug connections that will need to be removed if not already done so. I would of used a 2wd loom.
When you build this up will you be running on coil or wasted spark? If on coilpack i would of bought a new loom made for the correct layout and setup to start with. It looks like you want to do things right.
The money you will spend on buying the 4x4 loom + braid and time etc, plus a coilpack sub loom will work out to almost new loom price anyways.

Right,
I have literally done nothing to this since I got all the bits.
The loom arrived and thanks for the advice Jano. Really all I want to do is go back to how things should be which is why I thought a 4x4 loom would be best as it's what was in there.
I do t even think I'm going to braid the loom now as I want more of a factory look and everyone is saying the braiding just gets covered in oil and looks shitty.
I'm of the opinion that I want to get it all built up with the right bits and then tidy up once it's running, I'm going to spend some time on it this weekend, getting everything planned and ready, I need to inspect the clutches I've got and start painting bits under the bonnet that I won't be able to get to when engine is in.
This car is never gonna be concours and I don't want it to be so fairly pointless going crazy I just want it how it should be, useable, reliable and clean looking.
I am going to get the front and back underneath bits powder coated black though as soon as they are all off and in one big pile haha.
I'm also going to change head gasket before it goes in though I think and give the engine a clean, paint and tidy up.
Would you go for a wrc reinz 4 layer metal gasket with standard bolts?

That's what I thought!!!! It seems a long way round the houses but I do like this one

If i wanted another red one then i may have got one for 13k in fairly decent condition.
even with the bits ive bought i still haven't spent that and i know exactly whats under there and gives me a chance to put my own mark on it, and return it to what it should be.
i can see what you guys are saying but its really not that bad of a way of doing it, i just need the motivation to crack on with it thats all.

For some reason I received the tax reminder for this car? You might want to contact the DVLA and check what they have on record. I am guessing you have got the V5?
