'86 Escort RS Turbo S2 -project: GHIA-

Hi guys!

I'm Andras from Hungary. I'm a big Escort fan, previously I had an MKVII for 5 years (or MKVIb) but finaly in July 2010, I bought a black '86 RS Turbo S2 :)

My big plan is to make the car untouched outside, make everything back to factory look, but put all extras as possible in it! :DD:

The present:
-all factory extras are in, electric windows, mirrors, central locking, VFD clock, trip computer, etc. (only the heated front windshiled is missing)
-heated leather Reacaro seats
-EFI (OFAC)
-mondeo MK3 GEM modul:
-mondeo 3 button and a flip remote key (and all lock are brand new!)
-headlight reminder sound
-interior light-on when open, light-off when close
-boot open with remote
-mondeo MK3 speedo
-mondeo MK3 dimming mirror
-mondeo MK3 radio stalk control
-one-touch windows up/down, and automatic up on close
-Ford rds2007 radio/ 10 disc cd changer
-arm rest from a 2007 Fiesta
-cruise control (tempomat) from a Scorpio
-step-out lights form Scorpio

And so on... ;-)

A few pics will tell more I think

Yes, I made it.

Yep, 2002 mk3 Mondeo clocks ;-)

Well, the mondeo uses the Ford CAN-BUS , so it's impossible to connect it dirctly to the Escort.
Few MkVIb Escort had digital clock set, (it's not CAN-BUS!) simply uses the analog signals of the car. VSS, tacho signal, etc.
So firt I've tried that clock, and it worked perfectly.

I've taken the 2 clocks apart, and used the VIb Escort maniboard to run the mondeo clocks.

Now there are a "few" (50-70 maybe) jumper cables connecting the mainborad and the clock set/LCD/leds, everything :DD:

Love this! Different angle on car modding keeping it old skool but making it bang up to date with all the mod cons.

Some more idea's for you if you havent already done / got them: Power Steering - heated washer jets - cruise control

Well...
Cruise control is nearly finised. ;-)
It works, tried it, just need to place the buttons and make some "icons" on the buttons.

Hope this will last for a few years :)

I have some problems with the car. Maybe ACT sensor or the CO potmeter or something worng with the cables. The error code: 59. Changed everything else, but don't have more ACT and CO pot and cable set.

Volkov 29-10-2012 07:50 AM

Please, I need help!!

The full story:
-The car gets a lot of fuel, so there is no idle (rev up n down, sometimes stops, and smell of fuel evrywhere)
-I've tried to adjust the CO with the pot, but got no response.

Checked the fault codes, I got error 59: CO pot error.
This could be anything, so already changed:
  1. -CO pot
  2. -MAP
  3. -TPS
  4. -ECU
  5. -and checked the full cable loom
but got the same error code...

Any idea what the hell could be wrong?!

Thanks for Karel, the car is working great! :top:
No more error codes!

THANKS!!

For the winter the car is sleeping in a small garage...

Some upgrades (to buld in April):
mk4 mondeo flip key (tested, and fully working. open-close)

EXCELLENT work.

How did you get the key's to work? What did you used from a Mondeo?

I like the idea of old looks with new technology.

Thank you! :)

I've bulit in a Ford Mondeo mk3 GEM (General Electric Module)
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-n...0/s512/gem.jpg

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Z...2/DSC00104.JPG

This GEM controls the central locking, boot opening, the interior lamp, the light reminder sound, the "autobahn index", (and I want to make the alarm working)

I've got an alarm already which controls the locking, interior lights etc as yours did in the video, just not with a ford key  Do you know if its possible to make a Ford key work with a Clifford alarm?

I like the one touch windows.

Theres so many features you could build into a car if you have the time and knowledge with electronics.

mightysprocket 28-01-2013 09:09 PM

Wow... Just wow!

Volkov 12-05-2013 06:46 PM

I need a little help!

I've installed an AEM 30-4900 wide-band gauge.

And got this:
https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-R...E/s640/aem.jpg

Tried to adjust the CO pot, but never got better values :(

12.9-14.3 AFR @ idle
15-18 AFR @ low acceleration, -0.3 bar
15-13 AFR @ 0 bar :?
13 AFR @ full load

What can I do to have a richer AFR?

Thanks!

Volkov 20-05-2013 01:47 AM

Because with the CO pot I can't get the AFR richer, I've adjusted the fuel pressure regulator til got the correct AFR. (without a pressure gauge... :( ye, I know it's not tha best to adjust it by "feeling"... )
BUT!
The AFR is now ok, the car is better than ever, I hope it's not just placebo :D

Another thing is the mk4 factory trip computer shows nearly the double of the real values. Finaly got a scope from a friend, so we played a little bit.
The FRST EEC IV (OFAC) and the Escort mk4 EEC gives different signal on pin 17 (the fuel flow signal), not just the lenght but the timing.

Saidly I've only made a video of our first test, the scope test:oops:: playing with the VSS:

0150carmac 20-05-2013 09:26 AM

very cool mods you made you sure no your electrics keep up the good work

Volkov 24-06-2013 07:36 AM

Some minor changes:

-the center air control console was broken. Tried to fix it with a special epoxy glue but no success.
So finaly from my old wrong radio I've made a special console to fix it:

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-X...25B3%25202.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-m...25B3%25203.JPG

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-O...25B3%25204.JPG

https://lh3.googleusercontent.com/-Y...25B3%25205.JPG

And I've got some time last weekend so I've made a bluetooth cassette adapter just for fun :D

Volkov 13-02-2014 12:27 AM

Hi guys!

The car is in a nice garage for the winter.

Only big news is, youtube delete all my old channel, because there was some music in one of them, while I was driving the car, and the radio was on... :wall:

Och, and a new project for the winter: ;-)

Cheers!

slklite 19-02-2014 06:54 PM

Man, you did some good work retrofiting all this !!!

Can't wait to see the rest !!!

RSmark84 20-02-2014 12:23 PM

Looks good, shame you're fitting the MK5 Escort radio into the RS, a MK4 Premium sound 2000 standard model would look better.

Glenn_ 20-02-2014 02:23 PM

Very cool. You seem to be good with electrics.

Well, it's not an mk5 radio. It' from a frog-eye scorpio.
(my previous rds2007 was the mk5 version with the 10 disc changer and and stand alone sony controller)
Now, this is an "rds2007 cd changer" version.
(Automatic volume control, stalk control, built in cd changer control)

I have 2 problems with the MK4 premium sound:
- it's very "stupid"... (and I need stalk control :) )
- and the color. In my full black interior the mk4 "gray" radio looks a little strange. This full black rds2007 looks really COOL! (I think :D)

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-p...93862148_n.jpg

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-Y...14131566_o.jpg

Och, and finally I have a working version, the rds2007 playing music from an SD card and a pendrive

slklite 21-02-2014 09:51 AM

Nice work man, I see you have a DSLR camera, that's nice ;)

Well, for the radio I agree, and since you are not keeping it strictly from the 90s, why not take the parts taht will best fit your requirements !!!

I'm curious about the cruise control, the mondeo module. Did you get something to emulate the can-bus signal or does it work without it ?

CheeRS.

Well, it's not my DSLR. :)
One of my Escort Club mates (how has a 1990 EFI carbio) is a photographer.
And I made some electrical repair on his car, so as a payment I got a full portfolio about my car :D

If you're interested:
You can check it here

https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/-b...07210891_n.jpg

The cruise control is simple as hell! (electrical way)
No CAN-BUS needed! ;-)

Only 8 cables have to be connected, and it's working!
-12V
-GND
-VSS signal
-2x to buttons
-break pedal
-clutch pedal
-instrument cluster bulb

https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-d...0/tempomat.jpg
If you want a more detailed description, pm me!

And about the GEM (General Electric Module). It's working without the cab-bus too. But you need at least 50-60 cables to connect to get everything work, and a lot of other stuff (relays, diodes, etc) to get the locks work for example. So it's not that easy :(
Basically I changed the whole cable system.

slklite 03-03-2014 08:28 AM

Hello mate, I understand better now !!!

So the GEM can operate on its own, that's good news !!!

These pictures are amazing !!! Tell your friend he did a very good job !!!

Do you work in electronics or is it just a hobby ?

CheeRS.
