Hi everyone,

I'm part of a Uni Motor Club and have recently acquired a mkiv fiesta as our new project car.

It's done 0 (yes, zero...!!) miles since leaving the factory, lived in a heated, dry building all its life (it's an x reg) and is generally totally immaculate.

Unfortunately it's not worth that much because it's not registered as it was donated by ford to another department in the uni as part of the big 'drive-tired' campaign that started in the 2000s as a test car. Therefore there are cutouts in the dash, random bits of box section added and a fair amount of wiring for sensors and switches etc... that have nothing to do with the car

All of this means we're keeping it to compete in local car club events, such as autotests

The downside to a free, near immaculate shell is that there is no engine, box, driveshafts etc... so all of these things need to be bought and installed. I've done a small amount of research into what kind of things people are putting into fiestas and it's a split between 2l duratec/zetec or a 1.7 Puma. The upside of the puma is I'd try and get a running puma and transfer all the loom and running gear into the fiesta as I don't know what's actually been removed and what's left in the car that I can use to get it going again so I'm anticipating a bit of trial and error in getting it going.

I've a fair amount of experience with working on cars but I'm a classics man therefore will probably be pestering people about electronics and wiring questions!

Neat! reckon its ripe for a bit of auto testing! For simplicity I would go puma, reckon (IMO) the 2.0 is only worth doing if you are going for forced induction, otherwise I'd say puma as its an easier engine to transplant and there's not much in it in terms of power and tuning really. Keep us updated!

Its a shame it can go back on the road. Mk5 fieatas are getting thin on the ground these days cause most of them are rot boxes.

My father in law has a 51 reg mk5. Its only got 30k miles on the ckock and i had to do some welding on the sills last year for its mot.

I've seen on the fiesta pages on facebook a few owners of mk5 zetec s fiestas and the like are restoring them now with new arches, sills etc. So at least a few will be saved and hopefully on the road for a few years just yet.

Yeh i hope so. Me and the wife also had one. Ours was a 1.25 16v X reg Ghia. It was a cracking little cars. I repaired the rear arches using a biscuit tin lol.

I bet. It annoys me that fords rust cause apart from this there a giod car.

Aye I bet the biggest tin was better quality. Want to get mine restored one day, they make an excellent young drivers car, handle really well to be fair.

So, I’m pretty close to buying a donor car now - just have to work out whether it’s a fiesta or a puma! I’d prefer a puma as the 1.7 is a far more attractive option but I’m slightly unsure of a few things, so if you can answer any of my questions I’d be very grateful!
1. I know the 1.7 fits in the fiesta engine bay but how well?

2. Can I then use the puma gearbox along with the puma engine in the fiesta engine bay?

3. Are puma driveshafts the same length/spline type as the fiesta ones so I can use them straight from puma gearbox into the fiesta hubs?

4. Because the car is so bare, I want to use and much wiring from a puma as possible. Obviously engine loom would be out of puma but would it work to swap over fuel tanks, complete fuel systems and wiring related to that, instrument cluster should also just swap out, ecu, sensors, that kind of general thing. This is where my knowledge is weakest so I would love any tips/help I can get with this kind of thing!

Yes you can use the gearbox from the puma and the drive shafts.
I would use the interior loom from the puma saves any messing around no need to change the fuel tank .
