What turbo should I buy? :-)
Evening guys,
Well, after much thinking I've decided to upgrade the turbo on my S2!! I know this subject has been discussed many times with a lot of people strongly leaning towards having one spec'd for your specific application etc.
Now I'm not adverse to doing that, obviously it will cost a bit more, but just thought I'd check to see if any of you regulars have any suggestions for me...?
Ideally I'm after something that cuts in at 2.5-3k and holds boost nicely till it runs out of revs. I have had a T35 on an old RS I had and that seemed just the ticket compared to the stage 3 T3 (360 bearing, cut back blades) that's fitted to this one when I bought it. So time to change! I'm looking to break the 300bhp barrier ideally, so here's a snap shot of what she's packing so far:-
Some info for you on the turbo,
Bottom end is a standard 2.0 zetec end with the under piston oil jet sprays bored out to 86mm with cavalier gsi forged pistons from the xe engine, standard zetec rods with the little end machined out for the gudgeon pin from the xe pistons, very ported & polished head etc, arp con rod bolts, high pressure oil pump(using stronger spring), new bearings, sitech racing multilayer steel head gasket and head bolts, Inc flushed valve guides, rpm 36 cam shaft same spec as piper 285t2, adjustable vernier pulley, grs cooler, airtec rad, chipped etc, -31 actuator.
That's about it engine wise. Now before anyone points of he fuelling being an issue, I know. I've got an MF2 5th injector system (with 803 green in there) sitting to go on when the turbo does so it can all be set-up in one hit. I know not all are fans of this method, but it's the route I've chosen, for now
So any advice on what turbo would be awesome
Let have em, lol

i use a t04b super v trim ball bearing turbo on a 0.63 housing, spools around 3000rpm, up to a BAR and a half by 4000rpm, but it is a 450bhp+ turbo on a 2046cc 16v forged zetec engine.
a stage 3 t3 (very similar to a basic 4wd cosworth turbo bar the 360 bearing) should get you close to your target if not there with a 0.48 housing on it.
i ran 23psi through my old 1.8zvh and that was bloody fast, however a slightly bigger housing maybe a 0.55 should make it a little more efficient, but a little laggier, that was spooling by 2500rpm on the 0.48 housing i had.

I think the T3 I have at the mo is on a .48 housing... Same old story that the cars changed hands a few times and the chap I got it off is not 100% sure. It would be helpful if I knew exactly what was on there, lol.
So you recon the turbo I have on there is good for 300bhp then?
And may sound a daft question, but how do check what housing is on there easily? And you guessed it, I'm not the most technical of guys, for the moment anyway :-S

You should sell turbos for a living, I got excited just reading your description bud, lol. So it's really that grunty is it? Neck snapping pull?
Would you happen to know a rough price on a unit like that by chance? Bracing myself waiting for the reply, lol

Actually just one last quick question if I could Ade! Seen a lot of your posts on here buddy and you really seem to know your stuff so while I've got you, lol. I've been told the only weak link in my set-up once the new turbo goes on is gonna be my con rods... Just standard zetec ones :-(
Based on the spec of the engine listed above, any particular con rods you'd reccomend I use when I change them? Anything else jump up at you that's hold me back?? )
Cheers!
