Something Different -Mercedes c280 turbo
Something abit differenta 1997 c280 sport .....I bought this from newcastle cheap easy jet flight 500 notes later and I was making my way back to south wales I later found out its a cat c but was repaired by the previous owner back in 2001 via a mercedes dealer not much damaged just a new rear quarter but for what I want the car for the history is irrelevant, its drives straight and true and was inspected by vosa after repair so happy days. it wasnt running right it had a huge vacuum leak but still got me back to wales on 1 tank . it turned out to be the inlet resonance valve which I managed to get of ebay for £19 and order was resumed.
since then my brother and I have started all over again with the turbo conversion idea. I have almost everything I need before we finally crack on. we have a proper gt35/t04z dual ball bearing turbo this cost more than the cars purchase price 8-) 8-) 8-) ( it made 700bhp on the lads subaru), aem ecu ;D, 500cc injectors from a mustang, stage 4 clutch from spec in the us ( rated to 525ftlbs), ebay intercooler, turbo exhaust manifold, precision 39mm external wastegate. also ferriday engineering manufactured a decompression plate for me out of an old head gasket, this should lower the cr to a level where we can add some proper boost 8-) 8-) 8-).
the bottoms ends on these engines are very strong all that is needed is a set of rod bolts that I have got from a lad in sweden. he runs a standard m104 at 700bhp with only rod bolts has done for 3 years.
brakes - I have fitted cl500 4 pot brembos with slk320 amg 330mm discs, with some goodridge lines, ebc yellow stuff pads, these will be chnaged to carbotech xp10's very soon.
power to start with will be around 400 see how the gearbox copes, if it fails whihc I expect it too then a 190 cosworth getrag will be needed.
then we can start having some real fun. I would like to max the turbo out eventually
the aem ecu is all wired in and working a few little niggles to iron out but almost there, once the clutch arrives the spare flywheel I managed to source from german ebay will go to ttv to have a light weight version made up. also I am in talks with elite transmissions to make me a plated rear diff unit, or depending on price could just weld it up
it will have a 3" exhaust system from the turbo back.
new brembo cl500 4 pots
ferriday engineering decompression plate
external wastegate
bought some new wheels and got them painted
turbo exhaust manifold
aem ecu
gt35/t04z hybrid from cr turbos
made up some water and oil feed lines
I do like the interior - shame its getting ripped out. also fitted a new steering wheel
well started putting the car on a diet removed so much and havent even started on front seats carpets etc
oil return fitting for the sump also turned up today so we are good to go just need to find a free weekend to get it all fitted
cant wait
bit of an update after 5 weeks and a large customs bill the clutch kit has arrived
very happy
its a stage 4 6 paddle with uprated pressure plate good for around 470ftlbs should do the job nicely
will be starting to fit the bits over the coming weeks, just waiting for a space on one of my friend ramps

Well abit of progress on the merc eibach suspension now fitted
Started butting 2 coils off the back and 1/2 a coil on the front this got the car sitting around 100mm lower
I am keen to change to full standalone ecu at some point but being fbw not many ecu's will control it... Well not within my price range anyways.
So this is what I have come up with
BMW 535 throttle body bought for £1 on eBay
It didn't come with a tps so used what I had lying around - a Bosch c20let tps
Bit of work had the pair mated together
Just need to mount this on the Mercedes inlet manifold then sort a throttle cable and bracket etc
Bit of an update....merc being merc nothing is ever simple.. The clutch from spec was supplied with the wrong pressure plate..... Or so I thought, it turns out in the uk the c280's were fitted with 2 types of dual mass, where as the us versions only had the one type. Spec built the clutch from the american type. It is not as simple as swapping for the other type.. My ecu runs a 60-2 trigger pattern were as the earlier engines ran a different configuration on the flywheel using 3 large segments if you swap the flywheels the engine will not run..... So being as the no body really makes an uprated clutch in the uk or the engine, I have decided to have a New flywheel made-1 to fit the clutch from spec and 2 to ditch the std dual mass flywheel. So the Flywheel has been sent off to cg motorsports to have a Light weight single mass made
Turn around shoud be 2-3weeks all being well

I now have OMEX 710 for the merc ...managed to find an excellent deal that I just couldn't say no too.
This will allow full sequential fuelling along with a host of other things. Can't wait to get it on and running

I ve had a few they are a marmite car I suppose not everyone's cup of tea... But they handle well having multi link suspension... Engines are strong ..very strong!!
It's not a car people will expect to have a gt35 strapped to it so will surprise a few people I'm sure

Looking at rear diff change ..... But hopefully have it fired up as a turbo Monday , then may use it low boost to iron out any issues before we see some proper boost

Well fitted the clutch and flywheel..
It went together all ok..but we have a problem upon starting it up it ran for only a few seconds then cut out. Engine wouldn't turn over... Upon removing the starter motor some ally fillings can be seen...so I think the flywheel is catching the bell housing
So it all has to come back apart, without a ramp my patience runs out quickly... Hopefully it's an easy fix failing hat it will need to be sent back to cg Motorsport
Anyways no time to talk...time find out What is goin on.

Got another Bosch 044 and a 1ltr swirl pot
Having sold the gt35 I had to get another so spoke with Mercedes tuning specialist roman at turbobandit.com one of these ended up on my desk
With that bought it was time o crack on with the gearbox issue... Well it tuns out cg Motorsport didn't do a great job in making me a flywheel, they made n exact replica of the std flywheel which is not what I wanted..the clutch kit I had was for an early flywheel with a deeper recess in the flywheel, when we fitted everything together the friction plate was touching the release bearing sleeve...when we started it it instantly welded together stopping the engine dead...we had to destroy the gearbox to get it all apart not mpressed as a. New gearbox has cost me £280, with a few modifications we managed to get it all in and running.
But now the clutch slips in 4th and 5th ..sometimes will slip in 3rd if the throttle is stamped on..
Cg seem to think a 500mile run in period but having donem 450miles I think it's getting worse...
Will have to come apart again to see what the issue is
Really set me back as I was hoping to get the turbo on and running before June.
Managed to get some new ht leads
I have also won a 3.2ltr engine to replace my 2.8 currently these engines are considered the best 230bhp std and have been run at over 600bhp in std form
Plan is to use the 2.8 to hone the turbo conversion build up the 3.2 with steel rods etc and go for some serious hp
A new syvecs s6gp ecu is on order to control things
I will get there eventually but the car is fighting me all the way
