Default My race car mods for the 2012 season **updated 15/3/12 Wheels fitted****

After the original build threads of building the car then then putting the yb in I thought I would do a thread showing the cars winter upgrades ready for the start of next season in may.

After the season finished in late september I didn't touch the car for a few months to give some time back to my family as I seemed to spend every spare our doing something to the car during the racing season!

This didn't stop me collecting parts tho, first to arrive was a set of 5 group A 17" wheels off harvey and Jimbo these are required due to moving to AP330's to hopefully resolve the car achilles heel of poor brakes the standard cos 4x4 brakes even with DS3000 pads just couldn't slow the car down well enough..

I don't know what make the wheels are as there is no markings on them they do have group A inserts and fit a treat (I have checked the clearence on some 330's and they are fine) they have also increased the track about an inch which will help no end.
I also have bought some grp A conversion bolts and 63mm long studs to safely mount them

I rolled all 4 arches as the clearance specially at the back was poor

that done there is now loads of space (forgot to take a photo of the finished arches..)
for christmas my parents got me some polycarbonate windows and today we made a start fitting them starting with the doors, they came out easy enough and the new one fitted a treat, I then drilled out the rivits holding the electic window motors in, so a fair bit of weight has come out so far

original glass

new poly carb fitted, only the drivers side has the slider

previously I had taken out a rear quarter window and that will be the next task to refit the new ones

Other mods to do include fitting this pro alloy 70mm intercooler the original one is only 40mm and was designed to fit a meurker ( the american sierra) and I'm sure it wasn't man enough for the job

I will continue to upgrade the thread as progress continues..

steve

That looks great tony I want to reshell mine one day into a white saph shell

I have to use treaded tyres from 1 A and 1B of the blue book
I use 888's but do struggle in the later part of a race as they go off and a lot of the cars around me are much lighter so can look after them better..

Managed to get down my unit in the last few days and got the last of the windows fitted, I painted the inside of the windows around the edge to match the original glass, this also hides the sealent/metal surround

I also got my new rear brake discs, just putting standard good quality disks with ds2500 pads on the back

yesterday I got my new intercooler and repaired radiator fitted on temporary boost hoses which will be replaced when the new ones arrive

was good to get it back on it's wheels, this list of jobs is getting shorter with the main ones being the new 330mm ap's to go on the front when I find some!

I went down the unit after work during the week to refit the new alloy gauge holder I made the previous one housed the electric window switches which have now gone.
I left a gap between the oil Pressure and boost gauge as I plan to fit a charge air temp gauge when I get round to buying one.
I also moved my lap timer to the right hand side where the boost gauge used to live, it was previously on the left of the wheel and was a bit in the the way and caught my attention too much whilst racing..

Over the winter I have been collecting all the brake parts I need to fit my AP 330's that I had in my spares stash, they needed a complete rebuild and 2 bleed nipples needed drilling out and 1 needed spark eroding due to a snapped off stud extractor stuck in there, a local engineering company drilled them out and a spark eroding specialist did their stuff on the other one.
That done I cleaned out the seal housings which had lots of alloy corrosion in them they cleaned up really well tho so they were then painted in red to match the car I think they will look well behind the white wheels.

Today I fitted the new seals and cleaned and refitted the pistons and test fitted the new flexi hoses that a local hydraulic hose specialist made for me.
I then pressure tested the calipers using an air line and had a few leaks around the bleed nipples so I cleaned the nipple seats up with a correctly sized grinding stone in a dremel and they then passed the pressure test..

The new rotors are ordered and a local engineering shop that specialises in motorsport engineering is making up the brake bells using borrowed bell off a m8 as a template.
I should be able to get the brakes fitted in the next few weeks hopefully

steve

Managed this week to get the ap's on the car, I got some bells made up by a guy that machines parts for many rally teams and was local to me
so it was off with the tired old single pots

and on with the AP's with DS 3000 pads

My wife got my wheels refurbed for my birthday last week which was a welcome suprise!

the wheels fill the rolled arches well,

Last weekend was our 2011 awards night and I came away with a 3rd in class trophy and this for my study wall

quick update

with just the front wheels fitted

my 2 new toyo 888 tyres for the rear arrived and were quickly fitted so I could see for the first time what it was going to look like, well happy with the result

also arriving on the same day my new reyland inlet camshaft and verniers , these won't be fitted until after the second rounds tho as I'm waiting on a .63 housing from a m8
sticker paul came up trumps with some names stickers for the side of the car (all the drivers use them I'm not being a show off lol) He also did me some raceline stickers in red for my wheels which look mint shame to put them on a race car!!

not much left to do now before my first race at knockhill on the 5th/6th May
