Default My Mark One Escort Build

Hi, I've been looking over the forums for some time now but never posted. I've finally been cracking on with my Mk1 Escort so figured I'd start a build thread.

Had the car almost 2 years now, been working on it on and off. It's undergoing a full bare metal resto, and hoping to get it done for the Summer, as soon as possible really.

Bought the car complete as just a 2 door 1300E. And It looked like a decent car until I got it sandblasted..

So far it's, been Sandblasted, had new complete floor pans both sides. New inner sills. New outer sills. 4 link boxes welded in .Rear Turrets. Sierra Tunnel fabricated to fit. Complete Rear Quarters fitted. Modified tubbs fitted. Rear Arches have been widened. That’s the main stuff anyways.

I cut the front end off a while back, as I was planning to build a space frame, but changed my mind, so sorting out inner wings and the front end is the next big job.

Were over 400 hours into the build so far, and suspect it will be at least a 1000 hour resto. I'm doing a lot of the work myself, however my dad Colin is doing all the welding and fabrication. A few people on here may know him. He built the Saxon which is in Classic Ford this month.

I wont say too much about my plans, cause I always change my mind, but it's going to be running a Cosworth YB on a GT30 spec.

Here's some pics, I'll post some more recent ones tomorrow.

Now we started to extend the rear arches, however I would have had to wait up to 4 weeks for some inner tub arch lips, so we used the outer's, to make inner lips, and extend the tubs.

The arches don't look like they've hardly been extended, which is exactly what I wanted, as it's more subtle. I've also put a sharp edge round the arch, to give it more definition. There's some serious hours in the RQ's so far, and they still need a fair bit of work to get them perfect. Can be seen better in this pic.

I'll upload some more recent pictures tomorrow. Any comments welcome. Cheers

Thank you mate, appreciate it. I really admire some of the fabrication you do at Retro, really impressive stuff. Loved your Mk1 too.

Should be a good build this. Who is it that looks to be missing a few fingers using the grinder? Ouch!

Thanks, glad people agree. I'm not really going for the rally look, so bubbles wouldn't have suited it.

And cheers. It does look like it! However it's just the picture, he's not missing any fingers, luckily lol!

I'm just uploading the recent pics now, I'll post them in a minute.

Looks a lovely build. Shame you didn't keep the bubble arches mind.

I think a nice NA engine would be better myself, but great all the same. Would love an old Escort!

Here's some more pic's, the bottom of the doors had rotted through a fair bit, so had to make a new lip both sides and weld in a new piece of steel.

All panels have been stripped down to bare metal with a zip wheel, then etched, and the bonnet and boot were also acid dipped to make sure all paint was removed.

We've done the diff tunnel. I was going to buy one online, but I couldn't find one with round edges, as a sharp fold wouldn't suit the round, Sierra tunnel. So we made one..

^ Diff tunnel fabricated and welded up. I wont be using that cage, we are going to make one up from scratch with 2" steel pipe. It was just to get an idea of where to position the mounts.

I've been trying to get some inner wings for a while, I cut mine off and scrapped them a while ago, as I was going to do a space frame.

Now I've changed my mind. I went and picked some up last week, they looked half decent, got them sandblasted and they then, looked pretty shite. But they will work.

Cheers mate, the arches were fibreglass. I was going to do steel bubbles, but didn't think they would suit the theme of the car. The interior is going to be pretty radical though. Going to build a tubular dash etc.

And I agree N/A does look better, but I think I'd soon get bored of the power.

I did at one point consider a N/A Cosworth with the Quaife Type 9 Sequential. Would be good fun, but I don't want to, have to upgrade at a later date.

Yeah going to run 15's, doubt anything wider than 7.5 will fit under the rear though.

Thanks for the comments people.

I didn't go in Wednesday but done a few hours friday and got a bit done. These had arrived as well..

They're much better than I was expecting which is a bonus, they will definitely make a big improvement to the inner wings. So we started fitting one and doing the repairs..

That's the repairs done on the near side. Well most of them. The wing pans and pan supports need to be removed and welded up, since they're a bit untidy. And as you can see the repair at the bottom still has to be trimmed down and a further piece welded on. But I need the rest of the panels to line everything up. We haven't welded the top plate on just yet either.

First thing on tuesday I'm going to order the rest of the parts to finish the metal work of the car, since we're getting a little held up.
I need 2 Mexico Wings, front panel, headlight surrounds, slam panel, front crossmember, rad support, drip rails, reinforcements for the inner wings etc. I've already got new A posts which will probably get done soon.

I've bought an Engine as well, which is getting picked up in the week. It's a Cosworth YB, fully rebuilt. GT30 spec etc. I'll get some pictures up when I've collected it.

Cheers mate, an I'm qualified as a painter, but I generally do everything.
My dads a top fabricator and a coded welder. My welding is pretty shite to say the least, so I'm better off letting him do it.

Cheers everyone for the great comments. And cheers Dave, we've been waiting for your approval!!

Ordering the rest of the panels tomorrow, and will be picking up the Engine Wednesday or Thursday. It's gradually getting there.
