Default Not a Ford but i thought i would share

Good evening all

Id better introduce myself. Ive been lurking on the forum for years, ever since i had a mk3 capri (1.6 before anyone gets too excited).

Now the wife is the only one with a Ford (Fiesta ST), i have a honda civic. I have done (and continue to do) alot of fabrication on it, and this forum by far has the best fabrication threads i have ever read.

My car isnt blessed with the cosworth / MT75 pedigree, so its handling is (and will be) a little different. More akin to a tuned golf R32 / Audi. Where the car is FWD, with a little to the rear, until slip is detected and power is routed further to the rear. Hence it will handle more like a FWD.. Sorry- dont hit me.. If it wasnt for having spent alot of money on my engine, and it rotating backwards compared with most other engines, i would be running an MT75, but alas, im not..

I think pictures speak a thousand words so..

I started my Civic turbo build in 2008, it briefly saw the road before the engine (a stock B16a2) gave up.
I decided at that point to do what i always wanted to do and build a B20VTEC turbo, AWD, time attack inspired EJ2. Hopefully ill be able to compete when the setting up is done.

Those pics were taken as the car saw the road with its turbo running. The bonnet was changed for a new seibon OEM item which has oxidised within an inch of its life- i need to restore it soon..

Ill cut out alot of the boring stuff from my other build thread, its a bit tedious..

I removed all the rear subframe, for the rear drive parts;

For the trailing arms i used civic RTSi ones, modified them to shorten them, boxed them in for strength and modified them to fit the crv wheel bearings.

Since i was doing an engineering degree on day release, i got them to let me do my own project. I decided to research turbo lag and build an anti lag system, similar to the proper rally ones;

Got ahold of the electric power folding mirrors, but i had to make a controller for it. I wanted it to properly interface with the alarm .etc

I added some puddle lights to the mirrors as well (just hyper bright 10mm white LEDs);

Crap but it shows in the dark lol

I made a computer to monitor, control and report warnings for all temperatures and pressures in the car. As the radiator is in the boot, fed by small NACA ducts in the sides, at low speeds there is no airflow. THis unit will run the radiator fans at increasing speeds as the car slows to a halt, to ensure the airflow is maintained. This is also done for oil and intercooler fans (intercooler due to anti lag).

It has built in fault finding and redundancy

In order to tie in the ALS in the most effective way, do away with the archaic thermo valve, and allow easy adjustment of idle, i made drive by wire for it- which also allowed me to give it cruise control lol

I used an audi throttle pedal for the system;

I also made a computer controlled rear wing. Which can raise and tilt automatically. this will vary the rear downforce and add massive amounts of drag during heavy braking- very much like the bugatti veyron wing.

I decided to make my own cluster, using my original rev counter (looks tacky so ill be getting rid) and 2 LCD screens. This will show data on all systems of the car, fuel, cooling, anti lag, wing angles, 4wd .etc

Here is a little video of it testing. Just getting it to speak. The system i designed has voice warings, which will play through the stereo and alert me to anything wrong.

As i had to get rid of the Power steering pump to place the turbo, i obtained an MR2 electrohydraulic pump. My first system was manually controlled, but i designed a system to control it and put it in standby when necessary. To do it properly i made and intalled my own steering position sensor using a 10 turn pot and a toothed belt drive;

the toothed wheel is the new timing system. Ive made a converter that allows hondata to use a more accurate 36/1 timing wheel, ive also made another controller that allows any standard (or hondata) ecu to run coil packs. Im using 4 audi 1.8t coil on plugs, which are awesome!

and recently the new and improved anti lag computer. Ive also added a speed limiter system for track days.

At the moment im just tidying a few thngs up, sorting out the custom dash upper panel to move the stereo up (7" screen) closer to the eyeline as the system im making relies on putting essential information on the cluster, but non-essential information on a "paged" display on the stereo..

As im off for Christmas now, tomorrow im going to complete the metal case for the rear wing actuator, paint it up and finish the software that runs it. I need to run the accelerometer ive built in the fiesta and note down some outputs which i could consider (heavy breakng, heavy cornering .etc) for the wing computer..

Well thats it, all up to date.. I hope people find that interesting to read, and ive missed out a lot- i tend to do little updates, very often on my build..

Apologies if its all put on one page...

hang on people did you see the welding??

the underside loosk shocking, really really bad but the engine bay pic looks like a caterpillar farm

grind back to good metal, when you weld it must fuse all sides together or its totally pointless

welds should be fairly flat and uniform, the underside it covered in wire thats melted poking out of a pigeon shit weld, you want to race it???? love to see someone scrutineering that

car looks like a death trap, lots of pretty wires but structurally appauling

I'm impressed with that fella, loads of work in that

Question thou, where does the hot air from the rad escape to? And is it a good idea to be putting something that gives off that much heat next to the fuel tank?

some great thinking and electronics wizzardry.
for the guys mocking the spoiler, check out all the touring cars they run big daft spoilers for a reason!!!
love the idea of an airbrake although you might want to make the set up lighter to stop the increased weight canceling out the air brake

Fair play for doing what you're doing and getting stuck in, takes a lot of balls to tackle some of the stuff you're doing. What do you study out of interest?

A couple of things that I'd point out (call it constructive criticism if you like)...

Will there be any notable benefit to the wing? It doesn't look like the nicest wing ever, and the weight of the adjustment mechanism would concern me, so it's worth thinking about. Aero is an art form, and weight is the enemy.

The 4x4 conversion is really interesting; where do all the bits come from? Has anyone ever done a conversion like this to a Civic Coupe? It's certainly a bit different. My concern with it is the geometry. With the car up in the air, you seem to be getting mega amounts of camber change which doesn't look too cool. Even with the car on the ground, the wheels are sitting with a bit of positive camber. Can you adjust this out on the top link? Might cost you some track width though sadly. I wonder if you could space the front pivot of the trailing arm outwards slightly, use a slightly longer lower control arm and gain some track, being mindful of toe angle too of course.

Interesting project though, can't knock you for getting stuck in!

first off welcome to pf .some excellent electronic work there mate you deffo seem to know what you are doing there my friend where the hell you going to fit all the computers tho lol!

it was mentioned above (in a harsh fashion) about the quality of the welding to be honest to me it doesnt look very good at all and i would go so far as to say it looks pretty dangerous
i would if i were you get a bit more practice on some scrap steel, then re do the welding on your car
the metal prior to welding needs to be extremley clean and bright, you want to be aiming for a weld that doesnt look to raised from the metal (wire speed to high,moving too slowly,not enough heat) and should be difficult to tell which side the steel has been welded from if good pentration is achieved

other than that mate good work, ill be keeping my eye on this

oh and a little tip for welding holes left from spotwelds, get a mate to hold a copper hammer over the hole from the other side makes the holes far easier to fill and stops you getting "spiders legs" everywhere!

Impressive stuff, especially with the electronics.
However, I wouldn't want to go for a spirited drive with those welds though :s

Wow - that was a reaction i didnt expect..

Thanks for your comments- positive and negative..

There were a few things brought up i thought i should answer..

The weldng, i completely agree.. It was actually a bad choice of photos, i have that many of the build i

chose the first ones.. I had just started welding, and i was awful.. I consider myself a perfectionist,

and it was really getting to me. So i ground them all back and redid it.. They still dont by any means

look professional but the penetration is there and its safe..

The pigieon shit and caterpillars were undoubtebly the best description. Thanks for the tip with the

copper hammer. I wish i knew that when i did it..

The wing, i also agree.. It looks chavy, but the car itself isnt subtle, although the body is going back

to basics apart from functional touches.

The wing is actually a compound NACA profile, meaning there is data showing its drag / lift / AoA .etc I

do have the data somewhere, which i obtained through my uni course as a favour.. The mechanism takes a

leaf from the "Aeromotions" book, a company along with MIT who designed a variable angle wing which would

change due to driving conditions and requirement. Mine is my own take on it..
I would have rather used an APR GT wing, but not being able to afford one at the time, ive stuck with

this one as the holes are in the same positions as this wing (future upgrades).

The airbrake feature is really a nice to have feature, im not expectng it will have a huge impact. Im mainly interested in reduced drag during long straights and increased downforce during manouvres.

The radiator is in the boot simply because there isnt room for it up front anymore. Its mounted similar to the rallycross cars, or the ZEN motorsport TA impreza.. Its fed air through 2 large NACA ducts in the side and exits through the number plate housing.. The 2 14" fans are controlled by another system which supliments the lack of air flow at low speeds with the fans at low speed, as the car slows, the fans increase in speed. They also increase speed as the temperature increases. This is the same for the oil cooler and intercooler (to to the anti lag).

I know the car is not everybodies cup of tea, i knew that when i posted it on a ford forum lol..

Sorry if ive not addressed everything there.. And no worries about the comments, positive or negative, i do prefer constructive feedback but if there is something you personally dont like- youre welcome to say it..

When looking at the car now, yes it looks chav'd up a bit. Although the ideas and electronics are excellent i like the thinking. If you are going for the time attack look then the spoiler, arches etc will look right, Do it in a nice dark colour and it will look even better, think the problem is people are struggling to see the finished article as you've started on wiring and gadgets rather then body work. Make it a wide arse track day monster and the spoiler will look in keeping. Keep this thread up to date as really interested in how it will turn out.

Thanks alot chaps..

I know, it does look chavvy, i bought the car when i was 17 and naturally made some mistakes with it..

At the moment im waiting for its respray, when its done itll look more like standard, with just a front lip, the vented quad headlamps, wide arches, side intakes, exhausts and the rear wing lol..

Im torn between painting its OEM purple again or the fancy skyline midnight purple 3..

Were you born a fucking mongo, or is it something you've worked on as you've aged? Loads of competition cars have rads mounted in the boot, if you took the time to simply google it, instead of jumping on the 'lets insult the new guy and be complete fuckwit' bandwagon, you'd know this.

Anyway, the electrics look awesome mate, clearly a clever chap! Can't wait to see the finished article

Dont think you should go OEM, you've got a rad mounted in the boot and an adjustable spoiler! go extreme look at the time attack cars and go for something like that. Doesn't have to be fast and furious if you going race inspired. I personally think it would look crap without and over the top body. especially as your going to have one of the only 4x4 civics in the UK.
