Default My BMW 320D M Sport (Dyno Update!)

I purchased this car about 8 months ago, as a bit of an all rounder, thought it was time to do some sort of project thread on it, as its had quite a few mods now. Ultimately i want the car to stay looking pretty much as it does now because its very pretty and i want it to remain very economical to run, but also be a little bit of fun when i want a blast around the lanes.

So here it is. A 320D M Sport Coupe

Name: bmw.png
Views: 560
Size: 563.3 KB

One of the first mods i carried out was to get rid of the factory stereo unit and fit a phone compatible Kenwood unit, and a full set of Vibe slick Speakers.

Name: 6eb3a2f3.jpg
Views: 413
Size: 78.7 KB

The rear speakers didn't fit due to the tweeter size so i had to mod the covers to allow them to stick though

Name: 67db9583.jpg
Views: 468
Size: 121.8 KB

Then it was time to do a little engine work.

These motors are prone to suffering from swirl flap problems, so the inlet was removed to find one of the swirl flaps broken off and literally sat in the manifold!

Very close to killing the engine!

Name: flapcopy.jpg
Views: 587
Size: 77.3 KB

Name: flap1copy.jpg
Views: 609
Size: 9.3 KB

So the flaps were removed and i tapped the manifold to blank the holes where the swirl flaps once were.

Also while i was there, i cleaned the whole inlet and the EGR.

Name: egrcopy.jpg
Views: 583
Size: 33.7 KB

Having covered 150,000 miles, this sort of maintenance is critical!

A few parts were now fitted, New K+N filter, the inlet neck was modified to allow more air flow into the filter housing.

All the oils were changed, using nano tech gear and diff oils.

A full set of Dimple magnets were fitted.

Name: dimplecopy.jpg
Views: 389
Size: 43.7 KB
And i carried out a full service, noting a few items that needed a bit of work.

A set of poly front wishbone bushes were fitted to tighten things up a little

Name: bushescopy.jpg
Views: 420
Size: 30.9 KB

A new set of Grooved and dimpled discs were fitted front and rear. Along with some funky pads! and a full fluid change with race spec RBF fluid.

A while i was there i had a new full set of Falken ZE tyres fitted.

A decat front pipe was sourced and fitted, while i was there i also removed the internals from the second cat box, so its now a full decat exhaust system.

So at this point it was time to make the most of these new mods, Working with kenny we made a base map with EGR delete to keep the EGR closed to avoid further manifold clogging! And we spent several hours custom mapping the car. The results are staggering! We estimate we have gained around 60bhp and around 80nm of torque, but she will go on the dyne when I'm happy I've got all i can from her.
On a steady cruise it is now returning 62mpg, and averaging 40+ during my normal weekly drive.
Name: IMG_0433.jpg
Views: 397
Size: 53.2 KB

It goes really well, pulls so well from low revs and flies up to 150 in no time
has a few issues with traction though

The turbo is working pretty hard and at almost 2 bar so i am looking into different turbos to allow a little more

A set of HIDs were fitted along with main beam and front fog light bulbs to match the colour, the headlights are much much better now, and it looks really well with them fitted!.

I will try to keep this updated, as mods are coming along quite fast now, and I've missed loads off whats been done so far to achieve the results we have so far, if i list them all ill be here all day

Next mods are a large front mounted intercooler, and a Z3 short shift gear lever and bushes. They should be on soon.

I will get some more up to date pics later, as these are all a bit old.

Also looking into fitting a LSD, as the open diff the car has really is a set back. With the new power it would really benefit from a LSD.

Its so nice to drive now, from when i first got it to now is like night and day

steering is nice and tight, brakes work really well,

Nobody who drives it believes its a 2L its got some real legs when you wind it up

I find myself out driving it, just because i can The std M Sport suspension is really nice, very well balanced. I was tempted to go coil overs etc, but at the end of the day i don't want to ruin what it is, and ruin what its already really good at. It just does everything really well.

Ive pin pointed and sorted pretty much every rattle creak or groan, so its almost silent to drive aswell

Great write up, I have a 2001 E46 330d Sport and intend to go along the lines you have. I want to keep it standard looking but upgrade brakes, renew the suspension parts as they are getting tired and give it some more grunt. I`ve heard the front decat makes a great difference, what about the back one, what will you do come mot time? I also keep hearing that the gearbox and diff are the weak link if you tune them too much, have you heard anything like this? Hope to see more updates from you soon.

Does the M3 diff fit? After an LSD for mine as well as it's no fun with the ASC off and only one wheel spinning

Mot is no problem at all the test on diesels is dead easy to pass.

Getting the cats out made a great difference!

I've had no drivetrain issues at all so far

Looks really nice at the mileage James

Is it fine to delete the EGR out as i'm contemplating doing my Golf as it seems to be suffering from bad MPG (33mpg urban) on a PD115 on 135k

Nice looking car mate - the 2L diesels have always been the best engine in BMW's to my mind. Always makes me laugh when people think its got nothing then you leave them for dead at the lights! I had a 520d but didn't have the M package - so a little bit envious!

Interesting project this. How much has it roughly cost to get the engine to its current level of tune?

I've always been interested in getting a 320d or perhaps a 520d but the real life MPG values people have told me were rather poor - circa 37-42MPG. I'd consider buying one and doing these mods if it was cost effective.

Well it's arrived, I've done a dummy fit just to see if I like it, and it's very very nice!

Shift is now really precise, goes onto gear with a lovely mechanical thump just how I like it, and the throw is nice and short. Almost feels like a mk1 mx5 gear change now.

So it's all coming apart for a proper fitting soon along with the bushes etc being changed so I'll get some pics up

Definitely a worth while mod though!

Love it James - The car is a credit to you and having seen how well it's looked after it makes a nice change

I have a cunning plan for next year though, it will involve an E46 of some description and an M62B44 engine

One was parked by mine in Blackpool months ago, bought to rent place.

Nice car..been thinking about getting one of these next year..apparently you can get

upto 600 miles on a full tank..is this true?

With petrol prices amounting to what can only be described as legalised theft, getting

a nice diesel is clearly the only way forward..

Looks great mate. I must get round to some poly wishbone bushes on mine, did them 30k ago with standard ones, and theyre almost shot already!

Is it a EURO4 car? If so, I assume with the remap you managed to inhibit the check engine light with the EGR kept closed?

James im guessing the same gains can be had on the 320d Touring aswell?
how much would the remap roughly be to see the same gains as yours?

This winter grade diesel is effecting the fuel ecomomy a bit, i notice a 5mpg drop since the temps are down, and a bet a fair bit of that is because of the fuel adatives to prevent it freezing,

Maybe ill have a play and make a winter fuel map.
