Default My 24v Sapphire Cosworth (UPDATE: Back OFF The Road)

Picked up my new 2wd sapphire 24v cossie last Sunday, that I bought on the 'Bay' and I've not been hanging around with it

This is how I bought it…

Already had the boa conversion done, is based on a 2litre ghia so already has full leather heated front and rear screens, the usual ghia bits and bobs with the addition of 4x4 bonnet, cosworth bodykit, full stainless exhaust, AEZ alloys, LSD and cossie rear discs.

It needs a bit of tidying for example some of the interior trims are broken, like the gear surround, the rev counter doesn't work properly as it's still the 4 cylinder one, still has standard front brakes, the engine bay wiring needs tidying in a couple of places, and there is a bad oil leak which appears to be coming from the driver side rocker cover. It needed a rear light for the mot and the previous owner fitted a hatchback unit so it isn't the same as the other one, the front bumper is broken and the rear one is a hatchback bumper, and the boot lid seal needs replacing.

As I say I've not been hanging around with it, fitted some avo gtz coilovers and replaced the inner and outer TCA bushes with polyurethane items…

I'll give the bushes and suspension a day or so to settle then get it on my hunter geometry machine and get it all aligned up, but you can already tell the difference.

Will post more updates as and when I get more bits and bobs done to it, thanks for taking the time to read this.

CheeRS Matt

So you finally got one....!

Looks the part, my cam cover gaskets leaking too, smokes well on the exhaust manifold.

What's the grand plan?

Yeah after travelling all over the country I finally found one lol, grand plan is to tidy it up make sure everything works as it should do, so it's reliable, won't go for more power or anything like that, I may change the ghia interior to cloth recaros as I just prefer them, but I just want to get all the body and trims ect sorted, and make sure that all the electrics are done properly.

I like the saff spoiler but the one on there is quite smart, plus if I change it I'll probably have to get the boot lid painted as the spoiler sits right on the boot so Im not sure if it's been painted underneath

No, not to start with, I want to make sure that what's already there is sorted and working properly, I want to sort the bumpers and get it machine polished then tidy the interior up. Looking for some cloth recaros if anyone has any going cheap lol

If you have the skills/knowledge to do it then its quite reasonable to do, £1000 would see it done.

Not easier or harder to go twin turbo, just twice as much work and half the space! One big turbo is all you need, just cock size when people get caught up with the twin turbo thing IMO. Is two engines better than one big one?

I don't doubt that mate but it just looked like it had been abused for a while needed some TLC, if I was trailering it back it wouldve been a decent project, but driving it back 550 miles on 4 cylinders would not have been my most sensible of ideas haha

No that's true. When the guy bought it from my mate he drove it home with a bad top end rattle, the tensioner was shot, but he chanced it! It came with a spare engine in the boot.

Unfortunately not a positive one. Currently sitting in kfc waiting for recovery, after the gearbox wouldnt select 1st and me limping the car into the car park I lost all gears, gear stick is loose and floppy clutch feels ok but I can't get a gear, any help would be much appreciated, im not sure if the box is dead or the linkage is broken I'm not sure :/

Mt75 box or type 9? If type 9 fairly easy fix just the stick loose, if it's an mt75 bit more complicated, maybe a pin dropped out or a bolt for the cradle which normally means box out.

It's a hybrid box I believe, 4x4 with a 2wd bell housing, definitely not a type 9

bad news about the box. if its mt75 just get a 4cyl box and change bellhousing. car looks nice btw. saw a twin turbo on ebay a few weeks ago tempting but expensive.

Well I have a spare 4 cylinder type 9 on another car which I'm breaking, what do I need to do to make it fit?

The 4 cylinder input shaft is too short for the v6, hence the hybrid mt75. It will probably have a v6 4x4 input shaft and bellhousing fitted to a 2wd 4 cylinder box.

Has it got the cradle on top of the gearbox like a 4x4 cossie one? there's a small roll pin in the linkage that might of broke ???

reach up to the top of the box and feel for the linkage

it simply slots into the top of the box

the 4wd ones have additional fixings on the sides but hte 2wd ones don't so that's more than likely whats happened if the stick is all floppy

simples

remove gear stick gaitor
find roll pin
hammer out roll pin
remove stick
place jack under gearbox mount
remove geabox mount
lower box down slowly
GET FRIEND TO WATCH ENGINE AGAINST BULKHEAD AND ENGINE MOUNTS AS THIS HAS BEEN KNOWN TO CAUSE ISSUES WITH BOTH
remove 1 bolt either side at the front
remove linkage
replace linkage
refit everything you've removed
with a bit of luck, it should take about 15 minutes, if you take a tea break
