Default my mk2 escort estate *project rot box* update 12/9/12 metal work begins :)

evening all, just thought id share my little project with y'all, it's not quite as dramatic as most of the builds/projects going on on here but its a project nun the less.

only bought it about 3-4weeks ago, trecked it from eastbourne on the south coast all the way upto south yorkshire for her and had a steady 55mph drive all the way home this was due to the car only having a 4 spd box and i didnt want to bugger the car up on my first day of classic ownership by having it screaming its nuts off all the way home!

since getting her home iv absolutly fallen in love with it!! i did get a 2000mile limited mile insurance policy so i would use it too much and ruin it, but i think i may have to change that soon because im already half way through my 2000 miles

anyway, here's some pics

and today i set about fitting my first modification to the old girl if the form of a 'new' second hand exhaust system, the one previously fitted was rotten and blowing in a couple of spots so rather replacing it with standard parts i found a ashley 2-1/4" s/s system complete with a newish manifold, sounds soo nice now! and im pretty sure it'l fit the zetec manifold when i go down the zetec route... bonus

here's some pic i managed to take

i also got some -2" front springs aswel but im not sure if ill be fitting them now as my jack doesnt go under the car as it is now and had to get it onto bricks to get it up abit lol so i think it would be far to low with them fitted

my plans are...

loose the daft steering when i find something else i like the look of... opinions?

get a type 9 5spd gearbox, really cant get on with 4 gears, just doesnt feel right to me.

and do either a 1.8 or 2.0 zetec conversion, but i need to look into it abit more befour i start buying things, im a complete noob to the old skool fords and i know bugger all atm so any advise on zetec conversions would be brilliant!!

get some 7jX13" minilights, same as whats fitted atm, but want a deeper dish on them...

fit a rev counter, and fit a new centre console which i have already, original one's naf, think the previous owner buggered it trying to fit an aftermarket cd player.

thats about it really, not looking to do anything too major at this point, just try to look after it the best i can because it's lovely and clean atm and i want to keep it like that.

all comments, opinions and advice are very welcome
thanx for looking

Really like that! I'd love a mk2. If your struggling to get your jack under though you will have no chance if you put those springs on you got i would have thought.

Does look dead clean Tez.

Crying out for the wider wheels. Needs a front and rear spoiler for sure I think.

cheers for the comments guys, sadly i cant take any credit for how clean it is, i cheated and bought it this way

the car has been lowerd 2" on the rear but im sure the front is standard height?

massivewangers: i have to disagree with you on that, spoilers look ok and suit 2dr's but not 4dr's imo.

rs clint: do you have any pics of said steering wheel? and a price? i hate my steering wheel, doesnt suit the car atal!

got myself some winter wheels today, plan was to give them a quick temp refurb in black with a polished rim, but when i got them home and sized up against my mk2 i started having douts about them, my current wheels are 13X6j and these new wheels are 14X7j and they look maahoosive up against my mk2, begining to think they wont actually fit? ;(

anyway, here they are... beleive they're revolutions but not 100%

as you can hopfully see (iphone pics) the wheels do need a refurb, and you can also see how big they look! fingers crossed i can find my locking wheel nut key tomorrow so i can test fit them befour getting too involved with refurbing them...
any idea's on how to extract a locking wheel nut without the key

well it's been a while since iv been on here so thought i might aswel update this topic, although there isnt much in the way of an update just been keeping my eye out for little bargains now and then and enjoying the car now we're starting to get abit of good weather

here's what iv picked up soo far...

2ltr silvertop zetec engine, i bought this for Ł30 as it had been sitting around for 2 years in a barn!! i also got a spare head, spare cam's and a few other bits thrown in, happy days... i thought...

one broken valve... not a big problem, but then i took a look at the block and found water down one of the bores ;( i didnt think to take a pic of what it looked like but it was all rusted up and didnt look good atall so i tried honing it out which cleared it up abit but still isnt ideal by any means

i gave up trying to hone it at home myself so it's now down my local engine builders place getting checked out to see if its save-able, if not then i might get it bored out to 2.1 but il just see what happens for now...

while the engines down there i managed to find these...

hopfully get the rebuild kit ordered soon and get cracking on stripping and rebuilding them which should be fun.

thats all iv got for now, im hoping progress will pick up abit now my wallets recovered from christmas lol

it's a wreck, im not going to lie, but thats why i wanted it really, my moredoor didnt really have alot needing to be done on it and i was getting fed up with having to say someone else had bought it back to life, where as when this ones done i can actually say i did it all.. and its some thing iv wanted to do for ages but always put myself off for the obvious reasons lol.

anyway, the plan... the plan is to restore it as best i can by myself, this will envolve replacing both front wings, lower rear valance, tailgate, bonnet, both front doors and possibly the front panel and sorting out the underside stripping it down, repairing any rot spot and painting it all back up and respraying the whole car either toyota matador red mica with black mexico style decals or vauxhall arden blue with white mexico style decals, havnt decided on that yet...

im in 2 minds atm wether or not to just keep it off the road now and crack on, or use it for a couple of months first untill iv get everything i need to just plough into it and goo balls out kind of thing...?

iv already made a start on collecting parts for her, so far i have both front doors (need to collect) front and rear bumpers, front bumper indicators, rear bench seat and brackets, front seat runners and seat belt buckles, bonnet tailgate and front wings which il be collectiong from escort-tec this week at some point so getting there already with the parts...

here's a pic of saturdays shopping...

after my shopping expedition saturday i made a start removing the gauges and crap because to me it just looked like someone had ram raided halfords with the thing, half of them wernt even wired in and being used lol and this is the mess behind it all...

and after a little sort out.

i havnt finished with that little lot yet, iv got to trce back where each wire goes to and find out what delights i have down there for me, the few wire's i have removed havnt been connected properly, only wound around and taped lol so not soo bad, but we'll see...

and here's a couple of random pics iv played with...

cheers dude, yeh i'v been following your build when i come online and its looking good, thats what sort of made my mind up on swopping for this one, you dont tend to see estates about, occasionaly see the odd mk1/2 saloon but not estates...

im not sure what im paying for the wings exactly, iv just been given a price for the wings, bonnet and boot hatch all together.

It appears to be a W reg at the front and a V plate on the back?

Yeh I don't know what that's all about, the front 'W' reg is the correct one and It did come with the right number plate for the rear in the boot so god knows ??
