Default Well time to start again i think(track car build)

After thinking long and hard about what i can afford to vehicle wise ive decided to start afresh.

With that in mind ill be putting the 200mph on hold for a long time and just getting a car built(last car ended up bent)

So this build will be to enter Time Attack, its almost like a sprint championship with very relaxed rules about modifications, you can pretty much go bananas, only rules are, no methanol, no slicks, fastest lap wins, check out ronnie amis car if you want to see how a 3dr got on

alot of the things ill be able to transfer from my old shell, the engine/transmission/exhaust, suspension, ecu and seats, everything else is new.

So i bought a shell to start, this is an old shell that was raced in the GT championship at Castle Combe, it has a full FIA/MSA approved shell and is seamwelded.

we then cut out the rear arches and bonded GRP one 60mm wider ones on the rear also the we added 25mm wider GRP ones to the front.

ill be running rota GTR-Ds in 18x10 fronts and 18x12s on the rear

Im currently waiting on the GRP doors, boot and bonnet to arrive, once they are here we will adjust the everything before finally bolting it on to make sure all the shut lines are correct, id get some proper pics for you guys but the site that has them all on is down.

Next up we made a fuel tank in the boot, its a 64litre tank, and we intentionally had it sitting slightly higher up so it gives us the ability to make a massive functional diffuser setup, this should provide alot of downforce so that we dont need to rely so heavily on the a rear wing which in turn promotes more drag.

you can also see a little bracket we made to hold my dual bosch 044 fuel pumps.

One of the biggest issues on track is fuel surge, the rx7 struggles with this immensly, so much so that at the nurburgring you need to keep the tank above a half when your flat out as you can hit spots where your just sucking air, with this setup the only that would happen is if you on your roof as you can see, the 2 AN10 fittings will be attached at the bottom of the sump for the pumps to pull from.

the aim of the car is just run it at 400bhp and weigh 1000kg for a while but then have the ability to bolt a single turbo on and go for the 700bhp at a later stage since all the fuel setup is ready for it, bang a set of slicks on then go chasing after dannys rwd escort.

well thats it for the moment as we need to wait for some more stuff to arrive but will give everyone an update when the other GRP parts are bolted on.

the plan was to compete for the full year of time attack but since im getting royally shafted by the insurance instead now it looks like i wont have the fund to build the car from the insurance money and will have to foot the bill myself.

Im hoping maybe i can make it to a couple of the last rounds so i can get my eye in properly then go for it all guns blazing next year.

the thing that sucks is the tyres(285 front/335 rear) i need cost Ł1400 for the set and i would imagine ill only get probably 2 rounds out of them if im lucky

hence really it would make more sense to save up over next winter so i know ill have to budget for all my tyres

or have a cheap set of slightly smaller width wheels for time attack as a compromise....

but if i save myself Ł400 by running super skinny tyres i then have to go out and spend Ł450 on a set of rear wheels that are skinny width but low offset to give me the wider track ill need.

for example if i went for 18x10 on the rear with 265s id need an offset of MINUS 5 to give me the same track as my 18x12 et20

then ill have dropped lateral grip which in turn will make me slower, ill only have 400bhp/1000kg to start with, no point doing it if you just gonna be sitting at the back

I can't honestly see why you think you need that massive tyre width, or extra track. The FD is a superb car out of the box, and and some well chosen parts, mainly in the reliability department would make a competitive car. The biggest factor in this venture as a TA car though - is going to be the driver.

If I was planning on doing TA, I'd sort a good, reliable car and get in as much actual driving tuition and practice in as you can. That will give you the best bet.
