Escort xr3i cabrio rebuild
Dear Ford fellows!
I found this nice Ford Forum in the web and so registrated myself to see if you can help my project and if i can help somebody as well!
My story is the following!
My brother saw a black 1988 cab xr3i on sale and called me saying that it was original, so 15 days after I went to pick it...
The car was 86.000 kms and stopped since 2 years on sale. The Hood was awfull with 1 meter lenght cut, but the car was complete and original.
After buying it, I made a complete repair, engine belt, oils, 4 shocks , some rubbers, new rear brakes, etc...
Later on, I found some new interiors and also changed them.
My last job was the painture. The front Hood was painted new and the rest of the car was polished. Also the exterior boot was changed, although it is not 100% as I wish!
The dashboard came out to check some wires and clean, etc...
Now , presently I have two problems to solve:
1 - the rev counter never worked! can you help me?
2 - The steering rack seems to be very tight. Even with the wheels on air, you can hardly turn the wheels with your hands. I intend to take the steering rack out. Is there any special procedure to check on the rack?
All ideas will be appreciated!

Looks great, my guess with the rev counter is the instrument itself, swap for a known working item. Steering is very heavy on Mk3 and 4 but if wheels are in air should be smooth. No special proceesures for rack really, just check the inner and outer ball joints for slak/play. If its stiff just get another one and fit that because yours will be worn if used in that condition for any lengh of time I would have thought.
Good luck with it - you have done a nice job!

Hi friends!
Thanks for your quick replies!
I suspect that the steering rack might have been adjusted too much in order to take out any noise! Because I can hear and feel a small noise on the steering.
I will try to take it out and lubrificate and check it.
Referring to the rev counter, I believe that the green wire is ok, but I think that it does not arrives any voltage to the rev counter. Does it work with 12 volts?
I was very lucky with the body of the car because there is no rust and the car was outside about 1-2 years although the region is dry!
I also intend to check the engine starter, because either the car starts at first or the starting is a bit lazy. It might be the point adjust.I checked the engine firing point with a machine, but sometimes we need to advance a bit.
Well , must go! My wife...
