Hi mate the only thing I'd say is to do your resurch, look at how the cars constructed, ask in a bodyshop, not your local garage!! I've seen some very poor weld repairs done by garages that only want to get it welded for the mot!!. Over welding in an area can put excessive amounts of heat between the joints and not only possibly burn up your car, but also make it rust faster than it already is!!! ...but anyway good luck I wish you all the best with your project

i'm not defending garages. but the public don't want to pay Ł500 or Ł600 to hav sills and arches welded on a old ford.

i agree mate, but a good job and a bad job are worlds apart, and would you want to pay Ł200 for the wrong guy to bog up your car and it cost you Ł1200+ for it to be put right?

If you place the repair panel over the top of the original panel, then cut through both at the same time ,That will give you as close a fit as any . then cut a 30mm strip off one of the off cut's and tack that under neath the original panel with 15mm sticking out so that when you weld the new panel on ,you have something to weld to.
that's how we used to do it in the body shop's , Gives a strong joint and better than just butt welding
