Series 2 RS Turbo Restoration
Now then folks, the names adam and im in the process of restoring my series 2 with the extra of a st170 box.
I have had the shell for a number of months now and work needed to start so off it went upto karl and beefy at middlesborough to sort out a number of issues and some panel work.I have seen karls metal work a number of times now and its second to none so for me it was the only place for it to go.
While the car is getting the work done beefy has offered to update the thread with pics and progress reports as and when so pictures should be on its way soon.
Oh and its the first resto ive done really so if its not to much hassle i will be looking for advice on the way,
Watch this space!
Cheers adam

well here you go then
ok folks little background on the car , shes an f plate series 2 came to us about a week ago , ala in all its a solid and tidy shell ,has deffo had panel work before and poorly done ( youll see what we mean ) its also had a front drivers side knock and bent the lower half of the chassis leg - no problemo
unfortunately adam bought the car as a rolling shell so no pics of a before, and well it came to us with all the glass in , and the front wings , front panel and crossmemeber removed and as above , seeing as we were more intrested in getting on with it and a resto thread wasnt discussed theres a cpl before pics missing , mainly a full car view , but im sure you get the idea
a few pics,
we decided to get the new crossmemeber in first ,this involved cleaning up the tabs for spotwelding ,
the passenger side wasnt as bad so was simply cleaned and prepped then the lower half of the chassis leg was heated and re pushed out ,
test fit
and in she goes
once that was sorted , we sorted out the inner wing sections had these had badly corroded , particularly the drivers side
new metal
passenger side done for good measure
front lips were fucked from the bat so replaced ,

then we tackled the fusebox tray , as it was deffo past its best ,
with the paint removed we found this ,
the wiper bracket was took off at the spotwelds , and after a little bit of grinding ?
ohh shes a peach - some right fucking cowboy repairs on this one folks pmsl
my favourite tool , the trusty 5 inch grinder
before
and with a couple of hand frabricated bits to button it up ,
red oxide primer to protect ,
rot ? what rot ?
adam had discussed a pedal box conversion before the car was deliverd , but planned on holding off till funds allowed , but as all the hard work in our mind is being done now seemed stupid not to put it in now
so , a plate was teplated to the pb , location decided and old metal cut out and the mount plate fitted
old peice vs new peice ,
all welds then ground back and flatted coat of red oxide for protection
also welded in the bolts to the pb , bit of forward thinking for adam as save the chew when tightening in ,
cylinders mocked in
the pb in question look like a mk 1 -mk2 item , came with integral throttle bracket , we decide to remove this as the cars going to be zvh theres no need for anthing more than a stock accell pedal ,
interior pics
as you cas see all clearances were checked regards steering assembly
in this pic you can see the vertical brace coming down to the steering coloum mount , rather than weld to to support we decided to bolt it , allows removal of full coloum and heater box pipes can still be fitted
drivers inner wing panel looked a bit grotty ,
if in doubt , cut it out ,
fully spotwelded bk in
front if the inner wing and wing rail
weld , what weld ??

ok peeps , todays update
as we left it we were on with the battery tray ,
well i didnt get over yesterday but special cracked on with the work
so first of it was tidy up the bulkhead ,and grid out all the old pidgeon shit weld they had put in when it was fitted ,
you can see in the last pic the rot had got down below the bulkhead, so it was cut back to good metal and hand fabbed panel will be made
like this
top setion re plated
whist at it the redundant holes from the oe brake servo setup were filled in to stop water ingress
and as with everything we do , red oxide prime to protect ,
once that was sorted special oxided the bulkhead , taping off just enough for the weld
rember the old panel setion that was removed ?
cleaned up and cut to fit the new apature
tacked in position
welded in
ground back the weld and oxided the weld
and the oe batt tray put in position , this will be plug welded in tomorrow
