And I bet your ECU won't support VCT?

IIRC standard Zetec cams will fit the ST170 head, for you power figures I'd go at least for some fast road ones.

The ECU does support VVT, although only 'switching' it at 1800 rpm, rather than infinitely variable as per Ford's ECU. For forest rallying, that's fine for me.
I thought the Zetec cams had smaller journals? Although I've never seen the two heads side by side to compare.
I'm looking at best options to increase CR, head worked and cams...which ones and from where I've no idea...open to suggestions.

im not an expert but from what iv read you will never get good power with the vvt coming in on a shift light setup, which sounds like what you have. lots of people do this and wate their time. your better off sticking to a bog standard engine. for ecu has a very complex way of working the vvt, its not On and Off. get it setup with a managment that can control it and you will see 195 to 200 on a standard engine max i think.

the man to speak to is will pedley racing.

what exhaust are you running and which model itb's are you running as the diameter will have an effect. Depending on this with good mapping you should be around the 200 mark so something is a miss somewhere. Do you have any power graphs with afr readings?

For smooth road use that's very true, a switched VVT is a bit on the industrial side but for forest rallying it's been fine and the power curve on the rolling road was good..if not peaking a little lower than expected. As the inlet cam is fully advanced at peak revs, regardless of operation, it wouldn't make any difference to peak bhp..although may affect mid range torque slightly.
I'm interested in finding definitive information on ST head and cam mods which are proven to work..what bottom end mods need doing etc. The fueling and ignition I can find a happy compromise using my current set up later.

Hi Raj,
I'm running a fairly simple set up with minimal inputs..Crank, tps, temps, only. No afm or air temp. sensors.
The length is approx 125mm, from trumpet to head, around 38mm chokes which should be about right. ST170 injectors which flow well up to 250bhp. Exhaust is a 4-2-1 with matched length primaries into a straight through 2 1/4" system with single rear free flowing box.
I've got the dyno readout but it's not really relevant as I want to upgrade the engine components anyway.

contact will pedley i would. but a switched vvt has never made good power in any car iv researched. iv looked all over the web as i wanted to do it to mine and they all end up the same as yours. i know will pedley has the ecu and the knowledge to get the power you want.

Hi Timo,

that's very similar to a spec crazycage and rick have done off here, they got around 200bhp, that was using megasquirt and some good mapping. Defo worth pm'ing either of them off here for their input. Thengine in question went like stink in a focus, now it lives in a fiesta mk2 shell

Am I better off ditching the ST /VVT and going with a 2.0 Blacktop with cams?

Best to speak to the person who is doing the mapping regarding ecu (should you wish to change) I would use VVT delete kit, the st170 is a much better base than a normal black top. The head is totally different especially in the inlet port size. I have had crazycage do some mild porting on my head and he said the inlets are fine as they are for my application.

There was a thread posted on here a while back with a link with someone who used a st170 head on a silvertop short motor I think, cams and a change in cr coupled with some other mods gave over 240bhp i think. It was an interesting thread.

Anyway dont want to hyjack daveboys thread might be worth starting a fresh thread as I know there would be a lot of input and interest in it

I've spoken to quite a few people so far and STILL not sure on what's best. Do I go for forged rods and piston kit to raise compression or skim the head/ deck the block and use standard ST170 bottom end? Which cams are best and with what engine mods for best torque giving circa 225 - 240 bhp?
Anyone actually done one who can give any definitive, reliable info?

Also, having done a little more research, the standard VVT seems to retard the inlet cam at higher revs so the 'switched' method may not be any good for ultimate bhp at higher revs, although the more important mid range torque seems ok..

if you start a new post in general discussion i think that will be best because this is someones build thread specific for their car and its getting clogged up with other discussions.
id like to know more info so get one posted up.

Where did you get the belt tensioner from? The standard ones are crap.

And the box is rated to 300 bhp

They have sold 30 kits so far to people using them for rally and circuit racing!
