Default 90 Spec 100k 4 owner Rs Turbo Build (R.I.P)

Well Against my better judgement i have bought an escort Rs Turbo again.

This one however is a turbo with a difference.

Full documented service history up till 2003 which is when it dissapeared off the face of the earth. (sat on someones drive Lol)

3 Previous owners Mercury grey on a G Plate.

This car will be going completely standard just how fords intended, which it is at the moment anyway other than the standard looking stainless exhaust.

There are a few initial issues which i will address asap.

i bought it with no MOT which it has not had in 5 years

The car is already booked in for 9.30AM saturday morning so wish me luck.

For the minute its clean clean clean. The car is a dog and does not look like its been cleaned in the 5 years either.

I will be putting up before and after pics of all areas of the car.

It has had a very small plate on the sill which has been done very well, however it is going to come off and be done properly so that you cant tell.

here are some start pictures of how i bought it, i will get some interior shots when i get in from work, Dont forget i also have my cosworth in bits so this project might be a little slow going.

trust me it looks a lot better in the pics than it does in real life.

its got the dreaded laquer peel issue that happens on mercury grey cars so will need repainting.

Thankfully rust is not a big issue, the underneath is solid enough, the front panel looks ok but it is bubbling, The front bumper hangings on the wings are all still attached but they have some surface rust.

The bumpers will be off soon and i will show you some pics

Wish me luck!

Right first money spent already...

I have ordered brand new header tank standard with sticker.

Brand new asbestos warning sticker as this ones all cracked

And a new ford battery cover which is missing.

The clean up will start tonight as its been waxoiled up all the inner wings and i hate it.

What a job thats going to be.

Does anyone have any pics of a standard boot under the carpet, as my spare wheel holder is missing and i dont know how the jack goes. Also ive heard about a spare wheel strap but never seen one.

Cheers Guys

lol at stickerpaul..

yes still got the saff, could not find an escos shell so im sticking with the saff as its smokestone.

it is a good base as underneath is solid and its been waxoiled from new its also has some waxoil thing thats injected into the sills through little holes in the doorshuts.

It drives absoloubtly spot on, no creaks or vibrations like most lol.

first impressions have given me a list.

1.Passenger side rear arch crusty where meets sill

2.drivers front arch starting to go bubbley underneath

3.Lazy tappet which got louder after being driven the 100 miles back lastnight.

4.very slight amount of smoke on startup, bear in mind its been sitting for 5 years. I do have the tool to do the stem seals which i will be doing this weekend.

5.drivers door card sagged.

6.Clutch starting to go.

7.the laquer problem really needs to be addressed as its peeled off in quite a few different areas, i think the only soloution is a full respray.

8.hole the size of my little finger behind battery tray, i will take some pictures of this when i get in as this needs to be one of the first things sorted due to MOT on saturday.

im probably making it sound really bad as its got so much going for it, ABS still works, Car is standard, drives beautiful and the history is full and documented, chassis rails and underneath of the car is really nice, front panel is one of the best ive seen but is starting to go.

i will get you pics of all the different problems..

i will be taking rear arches off tonight aswell hopefully, but i would like to get MOT first so i dont want to uncover any nasties for the tester to see lol.

right tonights work has gone as follows....

Heres engine bay to start with

this is how i ended up before i got bored of cleaning all the black shit off.

My next task was to get rid of the rubbish alarm that cuts the fuel pump. the fob is broken and is well dodgy when starting

Thats where i got to. Loads of soldering to do tommorow and loads of engine bay cleaning. It just seems like a mountain needs to be climed and this is only the beginning.

Oh well ive got to learn to be more patient.

battery tray looks a lot worse than it is... Theres one little hole and the rest is surface rust.

i will start cleaning that at some point. (theres a lot to do)

Right Day 2.

Well we didnt get any soldering done but my mate Gary come round to help with the stripping.

We got a bit further but have uncovered a couple of small isuues as you always seem to with these cars.

This was the main problem i found.

Good points are, Really good front panel with only a little rust.

tailgate is amazing after removing the rear window only a tiny bit of rust in corner.

Will post more pics tommorow, MOT has been cancelled for saturday lol, But im booked in with the bodyshop week commencing 15th.

as long as its solid underneath that'll make a good project and a wise investment.

seems to be the usual RST problems, rust, lacquer etc

will be following this one closely

Well we are nearly ready...

On the face of it its got a lot of rust! but compared to all the others ive owned its mint lol...

Ive seen some shockers so im not too disheartened.

anyway. ive ordered 2 arch repair panels for the rear and the battery tray and under tray panel, I dont want to change the front wings or panel

A because they are not too bad and easily repairable
B its original and i dont want to change the wings and ruin the alighnemt (originality)

Heres some pics of todays progress.

Rear Arches

Inner Seals

rear chassis rails are best ive ever seen and floors are mint inside and underneath.

Engine coming out

And heres how she sits...

Looking quite sorry for its self im sure you will agree...

Only sideskirts and front windscreen to come off.

That didnt take long!!!

Will be in at paint with me helping out week beginning 15th June.

Nothing is going to go back on unpainted.

yeah you can fix the door cards with fiberglass ive just done mine, i found that after i had mixd the fiberglass and put it on the rear of the cards its better to push against the bit that had sagged with a bit of cardboard and palm of your hand so you set it in the right place (if that makes sense?) so it doesnt set in a sagged position!

Well yesterday was eventfull, As always with these escorts once you start things generally get worse and worse.

On taking the screen out

Rear arches after all shit cut out

One side in need of cutting and making new

Front panel after tidying ready for new metal

Floor seat point which we initially thought was mint...

So after investigation we find a lot more, Its getting done so dont really matter too much, Not replacing every panel like some do, I would like to keep the originality so front panel will be repaired rather than renewed.

getting painted this week might have to be put back, new rear arches will be going on later today and will start renewing metal.

its hard work!

Going for a nice usable genuine Standard escort which i think after all this we will have, so many are like this now so its got to be worth it.

thats what i keep telling myself anyway.

All Over Guys, After putting my finger through drivers side chassis rail i decided enough was enough....

Car is stripped and being sold for bits to recoup the money, atleast will go to some other enthusiasts.

RIP
