89 Sapphire Cosworth 2wd in white
bought my first Sapphire Cosworth for £1500
White
2wd
G reg
leather interior
standard apart from a stainless steel exhaust
needs a bit of welding on one of the sills for MOT
rest of the bodywork is pretty good
has been sat for around a year..... so came with no tax or test
problems i knew about when i bought it.....
water leak from the head, under the exhaust manifold
cracked header tank
leak from the radiator
AMAL valve "dodgy"
turbo heat sheild missing
gearknob missing
front bumper been pulled off by a recovery wagon at some point
I'm OK with spanners, so doing some bits myself
I've also got my Dad & brother Matt helping me
my Dad worked for a Ford dealership (Crystal) & my brother Matt does paint & bodywork for a living, so welding & paintwork will be his job
Matt has a really good look around the car before i agreed to buy it & he's happy with it he can't find any crash damage & it's pretty good rust wise rear arches are better than we thought they would be.......just a bit of surface rust on them really
planning on it going back on the road mid March
my pictures are not the greatest..... my camera is not great & i'm still learning how to use my camera phone

Matt already had some bits removed & sorted out the first night I went up to his unit…… he’d already sorted the radiator out, he got the original one re-cored

late in the week Matt got told about a Sapphire Cosworth in a pretty local scrapyard
got some good bits
good 4x4 vented bonnet in white (my bonnet was pretty rusty)
good scuttle panel..... mine looked like this
Spax top adjustable front shocks, grooved disc's & Mintex M1144 pads
all the suspension off the scrapyard car is polybushed
rear shocks were also Spax adjustable....... but look past it
i'll find some secondhand or maybe even new

Saturday evening we (me & Matt) desided to pull the head off
doesn't look great :-/
the last headgasket wasn't done very well........ could see were the heads been rubbed down with wet'n'dry & theres 3 exhaust/turbo manifold studs snapped off
also there maybe Rad Weld in the head...... channels look a bit blocked
good points to the head are the cams have no wear & look really good, no
black sludge in the head either
valves look good as well
no signs of prob's on the combustion side of things
turbo looks good........ needs the 3 studs that hold the downpipe flange in place need replacing (very rusty)

the head's going to the machine shop tomorrow (Monday)
should know by late tomorrow or Tuesday if theres a problem
when the head goes back on, it's going on with a Group A gasket & ARP bolt......... i've not really any intension with running more than 204 bhp, but if i end up wanting more power i don't want to have to take the head off again

the heads at Alex Carr's in Hull for skimming etc.
when one of the exhaust/turbo manifold studs has been re-drilled (by whoever bodged the last head gasket)......... they have drilled into the waterway
basically all the stud holes are getting welded up & then drilled / tapped
skimming wise it looks OK

Rusty old tank
Shiny new tank
Looks good under the tank
Rear arches under the liners are good
Passenger side sill after the B pillar was be damaged at some point (high curb?)
Bought a few bits
Rear panel needs repair
Exhaust is really good condition
Brakes are almost done…… just need new handbrake cable & bleeding
Head’s back from Alex Carr’s….. my dad’s doing the valve (stem seals & so on)
Replacing the fluid in the gearbox & diff

Been a while since I’ve had anything to post……. This was due to waiting for parts & jobs on my other car needing doing
This bit’s pretty much done
Only need a new alternator (current one is noisy)…… & crank sensor (wire on current one has cracked cover top the wire )
Bought an Azura off eBay & 3 of the door’s were better than my Sapphire’s…… so swapped them over……… what a job that was
Photo from last night……. Looks nearly complete
Got the bumper fitted today…….. Side fixings on mine have been damaged, so my brother Matt made up a way to secure it
MOT & Tax this week I hope

your lucky to get the other sierra & be the same white,i got some white doors for my saph & they dont match.
i think the car needs the number plate center bit or put some ambers in it,will be better with ambers imo.

fuel leak was filler neck

Currently leaking oil from the front crank seal ...... still OK to drive round town cos it's not a huge leak
power steering fluid disappeared, must be a leak somewere...... but I can't find it
...
other than that the car's fine..... hoping to take it to York Raceway soon & find out what time a standard Cossie can put down

Leak's
Developed an oil leak the week after the RS show at Croft, cleaned the engine up as best I could & desided it was the front crank oil seal
It's taken til Wednesday of last week to get someone to do the job for me..... I wasn't convident enough to do it, my brother did'nt want it stuck on his 2 post lift & my dad has been "bizzy"
Anywho, got the garage behind work to do it (last Wednesday)..... they fitted the seal, ran it up to temp & even jetwashed the underside of the car
By Saturday the car was leaking more oil then ever before
Was off work Mon/Tues so cleaned all the oil off the engine (again) and it looks like its the cam cover gasket at fault
Fitting new cam cover gasket tonight
.....
Also I've had the main "pressure" pipe to the steering rack go, so had to take the belt off the pump & drive about with no PAS
got new pipe fitted now
....
To be honest I'm totally pissed off with this car & wish I'd never bought it
done a total of 850 miles in it & I've only been out in it twice were I thought all it's major problems were sorted (Croft & back & one night last week)
I was hoping to do a trackday in it, but I don't think I'll waste my money (it probably piss oil all over the track)
