My rotten s2..... Finished (ish) :D

rotten s2 update (26.3.09)
Cheers for the feedback guys!
I didnt want to go silly with the restoration as its my everyday car. but while certain things are out of the way I may as well do a bit of tidying!
Got my amber indicators back in today as I have gone off of the clears!
Just want to get some money together after this rebuild and get the bodywork sorted, few little dents and bits of bubbles starting to come through in usual places! (as my mates always say, looks good from a far, but far from good....getting tired of hearing that tbh lol)
Gonna be a while tho as this engine rebuild has stung my student wallet a fair bit!

Finally got the engine back in. Had a few issues with the mounts being cross threaded so the whole process of dropping the block back in took longer than expected! Just need to get the metering unit back in and all the pipes, hoses and wire connected then it should be ready to fire up!!
Finally wiggled it in with all the mainfolds on! Couldnt be bothered to bolt them up afterwards!
Rocker cover on and all finished for the day!

Managed to get everything sorted and the engine fired up tonight!
Went smoothly, apart from a dodgy starter connection, 2 water pipes leaking and a fuel line not being tight enough!!!
However, with those niggles dealt with it started and ticked over surprisingly well!
bleed the brakes 2moro then should be ready for a test drive!

Got the brake bled today and went for a little spin with 2 major issues!
the car is pulling hard to the right under acceleration, then when i let off the throttle it snaps the steering wheel left!??!
and the temperature gauge is about 1mm under the red !!!
any ideas?

Make sure you have beld all the air out the system properly, check that all the pipes are around the same temp when the engine is up to temp including all the rad, check the heater is blowing out hot or as good as they are, if that is all ok then it must be down to the fan switch, fan or wiring, if the fan does come on in the end but wont go out you may have issues somewhere else.

im not doing to good at the moment lol
shall have to get that bled 2moro!
I go the fans on a switch in the car so the fans arent a problem at the moment, its just with the fans coming on under the thermo's reading makes me think theyre may be an issue.
cheer for the input tho, will try it 2moro and see how i get on!

Finally got the temperature problem sorted with a new rad! nice one "zvhturbo29rs" for that
temps are much lower than before, been out 3 times in it and not even had the fans kick in yet! top stuff.
and also had a bit of funny money knocking about and decided i was fed up of the car being lowered 60mm as it wasnt doing anything any favours.
ordered these on tuesday from amber performance, they said 10 days and they came lunch time today! result!
25mm springs on uprated shocks!

My rotten s2 R/R update! (21.5.09)
So finally got it down to Northampton Motorsport with a chance of it coming out set up correctly. (so many times have different engine components let me down!)
The Idle was all over the place so that required adjusting, however, with it being an RS this was no easy task, The screw had turnt into an orangey blob of metal, so that needed drilling out and a new one putting in. Wasnt to bad a job in the end and no metal filings where lost in the metering unit.
Some of the team where hard at work lol
Once all was sorted it was ready to start putting some power down. Or was the plan
Soon discovered that my rev counter is 400rpm out so out came the timing gun to stop to much limiter bouncing!
Had to remove the knock sensor as it was on the fritz and causing spikey havok on the read outs. Next was gapping the spark plugs and advancing the timing.
But alas, when it came to crunch time the good old trusty MFI metering unit was not up to the task of fueling. No matter what was tried anything after 4500rpm the dyno graph just went flat.
The final read out was 149bhp / 171FtLbs @ 13psi. Which im quite happy with as I dont want to lunch the brand new block, just gutted as i know it could make so much more.

Its peace of mind now knowing that the new engine is not running rich or the timing is out or anything like that, so it should last (touch wood) until i can get some money together for a bit more power.
Next is the bodywork tho, underneath and engine is done. Next is rust + dent removal and paint! if you look at the pics the bonnet is almost a matt finish lol

Well, time for an update as it has been a while since Ive done anything to the car. (money)
It was dyno'd today with the fitment of a kent pulley to help with ignition issues.
The boys at northampton motorsport finally worked out why my power was running flat at 3500-4000 rpm. It was supposedly to do with the FMIC and where the actuator takes the vacuum pressure from the turbo housing. They replumbed the actuator vacuum to the cross over pipe and its holding the boost nicely now.
Made:
184.6 ftlbs & 165.0 bhp at 14psi.
well chuffed

Cheers for the comments guys , makes it all worth while.
After going for a little blat last night I have decided I want more lol. As is always the case. So next thing on the list is a clutch upgrade as the car did make 180bhp + 202FtLbs but obvioulsy the clutch was not up for this task at all hence the lower final output.
Gonna save a few pennies and get myself an AP 2000-35 with corresponding quadrant.
