Default Protecting freshly painted parts

What do you chaps use to protect parts that you have painted, such as alloy gearbox castings or engine support brackets etc etc. I have been using FROST's underhood black that has an inbuilt laquer, but what about alloy casings that i have painted silver.........what would you guys use to keep the parts looking nice n bufty!!!
