My Orion RST tidy up

My Orion RST tidy up
I've Decided to put up a resto thread on here after another member suggested it. its no biggie, more of a freshen up while access was good with the engine out.
this was my orion, 1.6l bought off ebay for a song in april last year. i've had a few now and i just like them. this was was uber clean and it was subsequently modded, koni's, alloys and some spit and polish.
turned to
it was a 1.6 carb, and got me to work and back faithfully for a while, then my mate bougt an RST
it was all downhill and i had to have turbo power.
i bought this turbo van off ebay which was cheap enough
and once it was completly stripped i started on the orion.
the engine
abit of teeth chattering to come
my billy bargain from the scrappy, 30 quid!
cleaned and painted parts,
the engine bay was degreased, sanded, filler primed, flatted, primed, flatted then painted.
thats approx where i am now, i have more pics etc etc, but thats the jist of the last month.
i'll update more pics and list of parts soon and keep on updating.
spec of engine so far will be, piper cam and vernier, double capacity intercooler, and a turbosystems chip. nowt special, but hopefully it'll surprise a few

thanks for the reply's. i painted the bay myself, with rattle cans. theres a run on the right wing in the pics, but thats well sorted now.
the wheels are very old now, i've had them 5 years since my first car, they're halfords jobbies anyway, and wont be going back on. they've served me well though
wheres the cps hole? its something to do with efi aint it?
i have a full 16e interior to go in, leathers, handbrake surrounds, doorcards and dash

Well done so far mate, looking forwards to seeing the engine going back in.
Excuse the strange question but what make of paint did u use for the parts u painted gold? Its just i bought a metering unit off someone where he had done the fuel pressure reg in this colour and i want to do some other bits so it matches. Also, does that fan bit come off the alternator quite easily? Just mine wil be a new one and dont wana go butchering it lol.

this is the stuff i used mate, available from halfords. i pinched the belt wheel in a vice and undid the bolt, the only other way i could see was to jam something in the fans to stop it rotating, not something i wanted to do.
and thanks chaps

What idiot suggested you do a resto thread?
Looks minted mate, I wish my engine was going back in just remind me of this post when I put the pics up of it going in
I thought it was an escort you had for some reason, I like the orions though, different
keep up the good work!

haha yeah, fair play to you for doing all that extra work, but when yours goes back in you'll stand there and be so happy you wont know whether to cry or kick the thing i'll struggle to get the servo on now i know it, but i needed something positive to happen, its been in pieces only for just over a month but i was loosing interest in it, and sick of washing and painting greasy parts ! its all good though, had a nice parcel arrive yesterday which cheered me up

sod it i'm bored, its pissing it down here and i cant get anyting done :x i really am SO wound up about it all that everyone thinks theres something the matter. its just the sodding weather and a car i want finished! *sigh*
i found a way to clean header tanks theres still a stress mark on the top that you can see in the pic but its more than up to the job now. i'll get the engine run in, settled abit the buy a new one once the systems been flushed a few times. also got a black cap off ebay cos they sent me through a Ł10 voucher
the same method was also used on the brake fluid reservior.it looks orange in the pics for some reason, duno why. also refurbed the servo as it was peeling and ford want WAY too much for one for what it is 8O . it was a bitch to do as its not really painted, more coated in a plastic type paint which doesn't feather down very well so most of it had to come off.
painted the wiper motor cover and bracket.
my fave bit so far is this
its the dogs bollocks. the gearchange feels so much more positive i cant wait to test it 8)

small update, nothing major but its all progress! also i'm not going to be doing the underside just yet. i'm busting to get driving it and with the nice weather setting in now (i hope it isn't short lived) i'm going to re- waxoyl the underside and 'just use it' . i've just lost interest on cleaning up the underside. i seem to be hitting so many hurdles and was fast loosing morale. it will be tackled at a later date and will probably be a small winter project. i estimate that just over half of the work is done to get it mint.
i've got the loom back in and loosely placed around the bay,its being plugged in slowly as and when i fit things.
front cooler in. its a fooking tight fit and the rad is about 1mm from the actuator! will this be ok? its not a ford cooler i dont think, but it did come off an rst in the scrappy.
i did the fuel filters aswell, you can see them in one pic. i scratched the big one getting it in the bracket, but no biggie.i might redo it ???
and just cos i like to be abit different  i didn't want a k&n cone filter like every tom dick and harry so i cut the front off an airbox and ordered a k&n panel filter for it. i really like the look of it. slightly different now to see a standard airbox too i think. i cleaned up the edges with some 80 grit paper but i'll do a better job on it before it goes on it should improve airflow slightly and also keep the heat out. 8)
also, this is thebit my dog chewed! d'oh
i think its repairable. and here is the (little)barsteward!
how can you stay mad at this face?
his name is Tex, and he's a rescue dog approx 9 - 12 months old.

space issue sorted now though i think... i took it all back out. (eugh) and did it again, after some gentle persuasion on the underside of the scuttle (and i do mean genltle) and a hacksaw on some of the icooler mounts i now have about 1cm of space. it involved some "custom" brackets for the rad and cooler bit i think it works. the rad looks slightly squiff but the cooler sits straight and with the fan on you cant tell so happy times
this was before,(havent got any afters)
started to paint again as there was some gorgeous weather, found a momo steering wheel and boss at the scrappy so got that cheap too but i like my 4 spoke so it might just go into stock.
the dashboard wood painted,
shiney reflection and a beeeer 8)
mock up.
i'll fit that tomorrow and sort some other bits, also was sorting other parts but nothing to report on that

It Wasnt Me!
Good work mate, I finally ordered my B&M Shifter from Christian at APT, should get it tommo
With regards to the rad sitting at an angle, it will work better like that...as would the cooler instead of the air hitting them bang on straight! (think formula 1 car radiators)
And Nice Doogy! where did the bit he chewed go?

oooooh! why didn't you say so!
they go along the top of the doorcards, underneath the windows.
a weekor so of small tweaks and its time to turn the key
i've got to fit the brakelines, and fuel lines under the car, bleed both systems, fit the front struts and antiroll bar withthe new polybushes and i think thats it.

i've been really lazy the last week. i've got a small project on in the garden too though, in the shape of a new shed so i've been working on that most evenings. plus i put my back out so njo play for a few days....but
its starting to look like a car again!
its back on (two) wheels, tank is on, lines are in, front struts are partially built up but fitted ayway. i need a new track rod end i found out though . new water/boost pipes are ordered. err... nearly there
this is what i've managed to get the cooler and rad sitting like.

about 4 updates all in one here from another site, so sorry if some of it doesn't make sense.
IT RUNS!
i had the coolant temp sensor and cold start switch mixed up (brown and yellow)
a guy on passionford posted this picture which helped me sort it
had a small leak on the metering unit but i pinched up the bolts and its sorted that, it has no zorst yet and is so loud  i woke the neighbours up at 8.30 haha.
it wont idle for more than a few seconds, a rogue air leak is suspect, but today i havent messed with the engine much, my mate denis bust his box on his rst so we were fixing that for abit. i'm knackered and finished for the day, the engine sounds nice though ,and i've fitted all te exhaust now, it has a nice tone to it.
the "finished" bay. that is until its had a while to run in again.
i'd forgotten how low it was
i fixed it go me.
well, after changing all the boost pipes, intercooler, various bits of boost hose (god bless mates with rst's eh! ) so it didn't cost me anything; the problem was...... drumroll..... this piece of hose at the back of the inlet.
i must have knocked it getting the engine in, its hard plastic and quite brittle anyway. i was sitting in the car and it sounded like the heaters were on, but it was that air leak, and you couldn't hear it from the front of the car over the sound on the engine.
anyway, a small vid of it ticking over. yes it sounds like a bag of spanners, no i dont know why cos it ran alot nicer before, but its progress. now theres just 10000 other small jobs to fix and its nearly there it might just want a steady run to warm up properly again i dunno
is it bad that i'm still loosing interest i'm so sick of working on the thing now even though its nearly done.
i've got to bleed the brakes, secure the fuel lines (properly)
adjust the zorst cos its mm from the floor
connect the rear lights
fix my wipers and washer pump
put all my bits back on the engine, after taking the borrowed bits off.
front bumper on and adjusted
2 new track rod ends
fill the gearbox with oil
work out why none of my instruments work
i'm sure theres more
anyway, back to it i spose *sigh*
and i've finally got my rs2k alloys refurbed, satin black.
she purrs again. after tinkering with it some more i'm much happier with it now. updated vids.
