Default Muz's Escort RS Turbo Track Car.

Basically the story goes my brother works with a lad who is selling the car and mentioned to my brother that he needed to get rid of his 1988 Escort RS Turbo as he was off into the army and couldn't store it any longer. He took it off the road 8 years ago when he was 20, had it completely stripped and re sprayed, brand new genuine bonnet and boot lid and in the process of putting it back together had a couple of kids and just lost interest and never put it back together. He hasnt even put the New Ford Badges or boot decals on! He just used to take it out of the garage once every 6 months and wash it. The paint finish is absolutely spot on suberb and was sprayed at Hertwell Ford of Hereford, costing a fair whack. The sunroof is mint, which they always aren't the arches and floor totally solid, even my brother was impressed, which is hard to do, especially if its a Ford. Its got 48k on the clock but no history so we dont know if its genuine but looking at the condition I would say its not far off.

Engine wise its got a Cam, ported and polished head, low comp forged pistons, 5th injector, full stainless exhaust with K&N, a stage 2 T3 turbo, chargecooler, cossie brakes, and has a Dyno print off for 223BHP. It also killed the standard gearbox at this point so its only got a Diesel box in. But I'm new to turbos so its a bit of a learning curve.

To complete it it needs a spoiler, turbo and manifold bolting on, new cam belt and new headgasket just for peice of mind and my wheels.

Plans are to fit the following which I already have in the garage;
Fit Leather Recaros
Wilwood 4 POTS
B&M Shifter
GRS alloy rad
RS Accessory 7x16 wheels.

Then later,
Front mount cooler
CTS 2+ Box
Rear Discs
Maybe 90 Spec bumpers
then whatever else come along.

......All for £1500. I think thats a bit of a bargin.

Default Muz's Series 2 Escort RS Turbo. Engine Built...What a ballache! 28th FEB

Had time to do a little bit to the Escort.

Started tidying up the arches and floor. A work in progress. I'm not brave enough to takle it all at once

Before

After

At the moment everything is just being Hammerited for now as I want the car going and dont have time to take everything off and have it powder coated. I'll be having everything powder coated at a later date, doing it in stages and polybushing the car as I go.

Dug the Leather out of the garage and fitted those.

Name: 11062008440.jpg
Views: 1865

Fitted my GRS alloy rad. Got a grs Front mount on the cards.

My fifth injecter was also hard wired into the loom so it was permanantly supplying fuel. So I bought this to sort it out properly.

Then I put my wheels on.

Size: 80.9 KB

Then after seeing Twins car, I just had to pinstripe them.

The car though refuses to start. I've given it new plugs, fuel filter etc but there doesn't seem to be any fuel getting to the plugs and ALOT of pressure in the fuel pump. I think the metering head maybe blocked? Is this a common problem?

I've been reading up about starting problems and as I'm waiting for a GRS cooler and Samco hoses none of the pipework is connected. I think that might be the problem as its MFI

I had the bank holiday weekend to swap my fooked gearbox to my new Quaifed LSD box. I think I got a bit carried away

Off to the barn!

Spent most of Sunday afternoon taking my gearbox out, dealing with all the abs shit etc, then decided as I've got looooads of new parts on the way, I might aswell strip the car ready for its new engine and brakes etc.
SO out with the engine....

The engine is for sale if anyone is interested. Kent cam, 5th injector, P+P head, Stage 2 T3 etc about 200BHP.
Started to remove all the removable parts and give them a good coating of Hammerite.

And attacking the floor as I go.

Finished off stipping the rest of the parts. Took off fuel tank, rear anti roll bar, rear suspention arms etc etc so I could paint the floor.

Now I remember why after painting the underside of my Fiesta I swore never to do it again! What a shit job. Anyway this is how far I got before I ran out of paint. I found some Galv-Tech paint in the barn form when we used to do work for the Galvanizers. Its a zinc based spray paint and costs about £20 a tin. So I sprayed the underside in that first before the stone chip and Hammerite went on.

Then painted the mounting brackets etc for my rear discs gold to match the front bells.

Calipers need a bit of touching up looking at that.

Also scrapped those crap ABS bias valve things at the rear end, which I'll replace with a wilwood bias valve when I put the new brake lines in.

Got a few questions though.

Im converting the car to a 2.1 ZVH runnigng L8 Cosworth management. Will I have to change to MFI fuel pump and tank to an EFI pump and tank form an xr3i or the like?

Cheers for the pump advise. I've given mine a lick of paint along with a few other things.

After reading Performance Ford today had to go up the barn and do a few bits and Bobs. Bolted up my fuel tank which i painted last week. That had 2 coats of red oxide primer then 4 coats of silver Hammerite.

Fuel filler neck was looking abit tired, and has over spray on from the re-spray, so I cleaned it up and gave it a few coats of matt black paint.

Then I built my rear hubs up ready for when my rear suspention arms come back from the powdercoaters along with the rear springs.

Boring bit first, got my new RS2000 handbrake cable and a set of RS1600i solid lifters.

Then...

Took the engine out of the Fiesta ready to go into the Escort today.

Loom out and marked up where things go. Its a bit of a mess so will need re wrapping before it goes in.

Engine out.

Rocker cover off

Lovely.

So removed the head the check the headgasket. But that looks fine to me. The oil breather did have a hole in it though where the vacuum usually pumbs in, so I guess that must have been it

Name: 07102008119.jpg
Views: 1244

then noticed something which didn't look fine....

Name: 07102008125.jpg

Size: 66.0 KB

Cylinder one exhaust valve.

Name: 07102008118.jpg

So which exhaust valves are best to use? I've heard Burtons stainless ones arent great. They are oversized.

Pistons look a little rich, but on cleanup the valve hasnt done too much damage

Bored again on Friday nite, work early tomorrow, so went to fit my fuel pump and rear anti roll bar. Problem is I've lost one of the rear arb brackets. Has anyone got one lying around they dont need?

Then noticed something about my block.

Only one of the oil ways has been blanked off with a brass bung? I thought all 4 needed doing? Looks like I'll have to have that done.

Also got some new parts on the way. Done away with the crappy S2 ARB and track control arms and opted for an RS1600i set up and some MEF adjustable arms.

The engine came of of my 5 Door Fiesta, not the Mercury Grey in the background. Thats my old car, now my little brothers.

Engine swap shouldn't cause too much headache. Just splitting the MFI loom I'm not looking forward to.

I got the ARB in the post yesterday so havent trial fitted it yet. You need to change the end casing on the box to a MK3 or 5 as they have a brace not a cradle mount. I'm going to look into keeping the cradle but apparently its a right twat of a job.

If your going to do the underside, I'd suggest stripping the underside bare and get a roll over spit. I realise I never posted a picture of the floor actually finished before I started putting bits back on. Theres about 5 litres of Hammerite on that floor

Please don't say that
I was hoping not to strip the whole lot to baremetal, I don't think it needs it but I'll see if i get carried away.
Is the mk5 a direct fit?

Ah sorry no, I didn't strip the floor back to bare metal, some of it already was though I just made sure all the surface rust was gone, it was free of grease and dirt then zinc primed, stone chipped then Hammerite'd the lot. I wouldnt have thought It'll rust for a looooong time.

Mk5 and MK3 end casings are the same I believe and is a direct fit for the S1/RS1600i ARB

Hopefully Tuesday I can go about fitting my bag of new parts. All underside clips and bolts, nuts and washers and have a go at fitting that ARB.

Hopefully got my hands on these bad boys to go on.
