Default Series 1 (Booked in for the full bareshell resto beginning of August)

Hi, this is my 1985 Series RST, i first bought this car back in 98, my second car after running a around in Nova SR.
I then sold it on in 2000 and 4 years of regret later out of the RS scene i was lucky enough to buy it back with the intension of doing a full resto.
The bodywork as i knew was'nt to bad, wax-oiled through out, but i knew one of sills had been repaired and the front panel was in a bad way under the kit. The battery tray, fusebox and roof all seemed ok too and it had full service history with folders full of reciepts so it seemed to be a fairly good base.

Well in 2006 i made a start to the long and ongoing resto

Heres some photos

Sometime back in 06, making a start -

Before

Interior Removed

Bodykit Removed 06

Engine Removed + Underneath 07

Loom Removed 07

Has it stands June 08

Just been quoted around Ł2000 for the welding and paint work. Replace any damaged sills, rear panel, front panel, wings + cross member etc. Plus extra for Sandblasting the underside/ and inside floor.

The rear floor pan near the VIN stamp and seat mount has a hole, looks to close to the vin i think to repair so i might have to remove the whole panel including the VIN number. I've been told i need to trailor the shell to the nearest DVLA or send a photo of the VIN for identity proof. If the panel is fully repaced they re-stamp the chassis but i've been told they'll do it on the inner wing.
Anyone had this problem? Why cant they stamp it back in the same place?

when i cut out my rear floorpan, i did some research into possibly adding the VIN tag again

basics were that the DVLA were happy to leave it without and just have the VIN plate on the slam panel. and the police would likely see the car as a ringer and impound it until proven otherwise if they saw a non standard VIN tag in place of the original 1

feel free to ask the questions yourself aswel. i even contacted ford but they want mega money to restamp the tag in the original location!!

I'm not exactly sure of the legality, but we use letter stamps at work for stampng structural steel, so you could always do it yourself. Can get them off ebay for peanuts

Cheers lads, contacted the DVLA and its a case of either photo proof from a trusted garage or trailoring away to the nearest DVLA place for conformation. Once the repairs carried out they restamp the shell, as to where abouts is upto them i think. Been told to call VOSA for more info on where abouts they stamp it.

COCHYN - thanks mate, can't wait to get stuck in.

fraser9764 - thanks pal, i'm hoping to remove the inner panel, think its only bonded on plus two spot welds. I should be able to get at the underside of the main roof panel then to fully treat it. The photos don't really do the roof panel any justice, its solid, the rust is only on the inner surface, very thin. Its caked in oil, wd40 and whatever else was sprayed down there in its life.
Just hope its fairly staright forward removing that inner panel, any info on how would be well appreciated.

I'm going to seperate the internal roof cassette panel and have it all treated, the outer roof panel is solid so should'nt be to bad once seperated.

Plus got the car booked in for the beginning of August to get the shell completely restored
