Default My 4.0 Litre V8 Calibra build

Well, I figured I may as well have a proper build thread for once rather than just occasionally remembering to post, I collected the donor vehicle today, a Lexus LS400.

Rough spec:
4.0 V8 engine, quad cam, 32v, and only making 32bhp per cylinder to total 256bhp in standard trim with a standard rev limit of 6500rpm
Steel crank, steel rods, multi bolt mains, and enormous tuning potential

Auto gearbox, 3 speed + overdrive + reverse
Standard gearing is roughly 50mph in 1st, 90mph in 2nd, 140mph in 3rd, 155@5200(limited) in overdrive 3rd (which is effectively 4th)
On an 8K limit instead, which is what I eventually intend to run it at, it should be about 60 / 115 / 165 / 200+
It pulls pretty well from 40mph in 2nd, so on track I basically intend to essentially just leave it in 2nd gear for everything once its able to do 115 in 2nd, well except the initial pull away and on long straights where I will just sneak into 3rd for a few seconds, thats the good thing about these engines, REALLY good spread of torque.

This is the donor car:

This is the calibra that I will be doing the project with

Sadly, this will be the only update for several months I suspect, as before work can start on taking the two cars apart, we first have to build a workshop to do it in, as im all out of space at my place, thankfully my mate jason is up for us doing a workshop at his place, as he is building a 4wd corrado and we can share the space and tools and help each other etc.
Workshop space is looking like being (wont know exactly till we've removed a woodshed, a 8foot high bank and a couple of small trees) about 13ft wide by 35 foot deep, so hopefully should be ideal for the two cars to fit in with plenty of space to move about them, and there is another workshop next door that we can use for stripping donor cars etc, but just not for long term working on as that workshop is already in use.

Here is a picture of the engine I'll be using, its a "1UZFE" if anyone wants to give it a google, and its gotta be just about the worlds most well balanced engine and one of the best designed in general, its possible to stand a coin on its edge on top of it even at 5Krpm+

Here's the coin video:

And here is a video showing how well they rev for a fairly big engine
(I wont be going TB's though, I will be going forced induction eventually, but initial plan is just to get it in and running as standard first)

Sounds like a plan Chipper

I`m plotting something similar(ish) but not Vauxhall based

Oh and as for tuning potential,Ole Ringstad is running a supercharged one of these in his Omega at about 700Bhp

I know mate, amazing technology these 256 valve engines, lol

Its only 32 BHP per cylinder in standard trim (and hence per piston and conrod), and 32v in total, hence my confusion as I meant to write both but it got shortened somehow, lol

He got 1000bhp out of it in the end mate, since we met him at the ring, and a test driver from EVO magazine got 214mph out of it and it was still pulling hard apparently!

Ive not decided yet wether im going turbo or supercharger with mine, just one to get it into the car and running first of all.
Im probably going to go for about 400bhp via forced induction + 200bhp of nitrous, which I believe a standard engine will take without me even needing to so much as lift the heads off it (ie totally standard internals)

nice choice of engine for a project there,

400bhp via forced induction + 200bhp of nitrous, which I believe a standard engine will take without me even needing to so much as lift the heads off it (ie totally standard internals)
are you saying it will take 600bhp on no internal mods.

as in you could turbo / supercharge it to run around 600bhp without issues?

150bhp per litre with 600bhp

as stressed as a 300bhp cossie

PROGRESS TO REPORT, COMPLETE WITH BUILD PICTURES......

Err, of a big muddy hole, rather than a car, LOL

Before I can build the car though, first we need to build the workshop, and thats now well and truely under way

Basically the workshop is on a site that was previously an old log store that was set up on a hill about 5 foot high, the only way we could get the shape without ruining the look of the garden from the outside, was to leave the edge of the bank in place, leave some trees in place, and make an L shape workshop around it, with a 13 foot or so entrance, then it turn 90 degrees, and the back edge is 14 foot wide and 44 feet deep.

Its a joint project between me and Jason (vauxsport username: Tefal)
When its done we plan to build a 4wd v8 corrado for him to do trackdays in, and the rwd V8 calibra for me.

Here's how its looking so far, we chucked some cars in it to give an impression of size.

This is it pictured from down near the entrance:

View from the bottom end:

This is how the cars are likely to sit while we are building them, as it seems to give best use of space to get all round the cars with plenty of space but while still giving us the entrance bit free so that we can use that for ad hoc work on any of our other cars (we've got about 10 projects cars between us, so extra space could be handy, lol)

And this is the obligiatory random mincing shot:

Still a long way to go of course, but at least we have the site fully cleared now.

We've also got the door frame in, which is a pair of railway sleeps sunk into the floor and concreted, which gives us about 7' 6" of height in the door way and the doorway itself is going to be about 11' wide, as we are losing 2' of side along the righthand wall so that we have some storage space for wheels and to fit a wood burner for in the winter.

nice one chip did wonder if we were going to se this happen- thought you were going to go for an LS engine?

the irony of how you've gone from having an aircraft hanger to a mud pile to work in

how heavy are these engines btw?

Not had a chance to do anything on it yet, been too busy with other projects, mainly my mid engined nova, and the ground is too waterlogged at the moment anyway.

Have been contemplating putting the V8 in my sierra instead though now, and putting a saab 2.3 in the calibra as it will more or less bolt straight it on the existing transmission and is good for silly power very easily.

not sure Im bothered about being able to do 200mph, but whichever engine I go for Id certainly like to see 180+ at brunters (450bhp should do that I reckon)

have you seen the red calibra of a bloke called steve pateman. been in street machine loads of times. it was at one time, don't know if it still is, the fastest street legal car in the world. it was powered by a big block chevy v8. he regularly won on the strip and took the championship in 99,01,02 and 03. its an 11.5 ltr engine on nitrous producing 1400bhp. 0-60 in 1.25 secs, 1/4 mile in 8.14 secs at 174mph. he took it over to the states in 2005 to the world street car championships held at the no problems raceway in louisiana and scalped all the locals making it the fastest road car in the world. this car has to run on normal unleaded prior to an event. it has to have all the trappings of a road car. mot,tax etc.. so no lights removed, wipers still in place etc... see it on youtube on www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y9oHTMEiUZQ

Danny B off here crews for that calibra. awesome thing.

I should change the title of this thread really, as im definately going down the saab route now and keeping it 4wd instead of doing the V8

Still got the V8, but it will be going into either my sierra or possibly a carlton or similar instead.

I'll lock this one and start a new one once the saab build gets underway.
