Sierra hatch- college project
Thort id put up some info on my college project to make it easier for me to log and to keep me motivated a bit.
Ive had the car since i was 12, its just a 1.6 pinto sierra glx hatchback. Was stored on a relatives farm from 2003 till last summer. It was boggo standard when i got it. When i was younger i spent a load of time and money on getting it looking really smart.
Pics
I got it looking pretty smart BUT the temptation of a farm with big fields was too much when i was 15, so i ragged the fook out of it round a field and it just got wrecked really.
Ended up looking like this
So it sat in the barn for a year or so doing nothing looking like this
Then i decided to drag it out and do it up again for my college project. Over the summer i stripped it out to see what the rust situation was like.
Inner sills
one outer
trans tunnel
seat mounts
chassis legs where all rusty
So in the summer we trailered it over to my work, i thought id better make use of the free car storage so i bought a mint 2.0 ghia mk1 sierra to replace the red hatch
The hatch at work
So then the welding begun, stayed on late every night for a few weeks after work to get the worst of the welding done before it went into college in september.
Numberplate surround welded over
Seat mount
Spec
2.0 pinto, cammed, 38dgas, 421 etc, nothing mad cos i dont want to prang it
koni suspension
xr4x4 brakes
xr4x4 rear beam with discs and slipper diff
Gearbox overhaul
Fully undersealed underside
In time
cossie front end again, vented bonnet etc
cossie leather, half cage, white wheels, Respray in red again
Instead of buying the rear beam seperatly i thought id just buy a whole xr
So i picked up a rotten d plate 4be for £190
I ripped the rear axle off it, sold the engine to my mate at work and the s1 wheels to a mate at college which got my £180 back
The donor car for the engine was a d plate granada, 2.0 pinto, 60k on the clock, injection, ran sweet so i did a deal with the engine and ripped it out.
Few pics of other bits ive got koni suspension, cossie arb, bushes etc
Gearbox gasket and seat kit
Headgasket kit
ARB bushes, all in the post
Sorry for it beeing so long, im off to pick up a cam for the pinto tomorrow. Will post up some more updates as they come and take some more recent pics of the sierra.
Cheers

Got some more bits the other day
New front brakes 2wd 260mm discs for the xr4x4 calipers
Got some arb bushes, so the arb's ready to go on
Now ive got the rear axle all back together, with new cv boots etc.
I stripped the injection cylinder head down and cleaned it all up, did a bit of work with the dremmel and replaced the stem seals and camshaft oil seal. Will put the new cam in in the next few days.

Yea my old cossie replica (the black one in the pic) was a cvh. Im not a fan of cvh's tbh i think thier pretty shit.
Cant beat a pinto, i love em.
Will take some pictures of the underside of the sierra tomorrow, im hoping to finish taking the old engine out and make a start on removing the old rear beam.

Had a good old session on the car today.
We decided to take the engine out as it was only sitting there on the engine mounts anyway and was another job off the list.
Engine coming out
Then we decided to take the rear axle off
Diff mount un-done
Dropped
Then we cracked on with undersealing the bits we couldnt do when the axle was on.
Right up in the air
Wheeled out on the dolly
As she will sit for another week
Over the next few weeks ive got a load of new bits i need to buy, in the next couple of weeks the engine should be back together, just not looking foward to timing it all up
But had a good day and got a good few bits done

More progress today on the sierra. Didnt manage to do any last week because of half term but we cracked on again this morning.
This morning, we cleaned up the engine block with a wire brush and then gave it a nice coat of balck engine paint, will repaint it next week aswell so it looks a bit better.
Then i got my new XR4x4 rear beam delivered into college.
Its had new Cv boots all round, painted the diff and and hammerited the whole beam to make it look a bit smarter.
Got some lower springs on it aswell, its not sittin as low as i want it but its got no engine, box or interior in it.
Rear discs!! Look so much better than the shitty old drums
Also made a quick start on cleaning and de-greasing the engine bay up.
Next week the plan is to get all the new front brakes fitted up and to fit the 2WD cossie anti-roll bar and poly bushes.

Spent all day today on the hatch and got a fair few things done.
Ive put the bootlid and rear bumper off the xr4i donor car i bought on.
Welded up spoiler holes
Welded up rear wiper hole
Welding done on rear panel behind bumper
Both inner sills welded up
Small repairs done on the pas outer sill
Managed to undo all the bolts for the fuel tank on the 4i without breaking any, which gave me a nice fuel tank strap. This was the painted up black and i fitted the tank. No more need for the makshift milk bottle cable tied to the chassis rail fuel tank
Put some petrol in and she fired straight up.
Heres some pics
Welded rear panel, and fuel tank and strap fitted up.
Bootlid all welded up and de-wipered.
Fitted all the Lights etc back in to give and idea of what it would look like and give me some more motivation.
Hoping to get the doors swapped over and the rest on the welding finished in the next few weeks. Some more painting done inside and fitting some carpets.
Im well behind on the date i set for paint, its now looking like she wont be goin in untill mid september, gotta pull my finger out and put some more long days in like today.
Also must take the tape off the saphs lights from ford fair lol

Got a few bits the other day, an ashley 421 exhaust manifold and a full ashley system. Now fitted.
I also had a right result and managed to get hold of a hatchback leather interior, i put it in place as i had nowhere else to store it.
Picccsss
Exhaust manifold and system, system not fitted properly yet, ran out of exhuast mounts.
Leather interior
Fitted
My rear window that went pop, was quoted £160 for a new one fitted, so that will have to wait till after paint
Also ripped the headling out, ive got a nicer non sagged one out of the 4i, which will be retrimmed anyway.
Still got loads to do before paint, its neaver ending :'(

Interior is out of a mk2 sierra hatch ghia, leather was only an option that not many people had, very rare, thats why im so chuffed i got hold of one.

Well it's 14 years this year I've had my old hatch, had the old girl since I was 12, many many cars have come and gone over the years but the hatch has always stayed in the background. It went back to sit in a barn in 2010 and it's sat there ever since, I've only seen it about 4-5 times since.
Now the car is getting to the stage where it's starting to deteriorate, and I've got all the cars I want.
So now it's time to get my first ever car and the car that started my Sierra obsession done.
Its time to build a sleeper....

Well the old girl has finally had some love after all these years. Original plan was standard looks but with all my spare 2wd cossie setup fitted. But decided against that in the end in favour of doing a full original build seeing as it's my dads old car and probably the only 90' 1.6 pinto GLX left. The car has had all the welding done and been treated to a full repaint at work (we specialise in jags and Aston's). It's just starting to go back together now. Will update with pics soon.
