TOTB 9 Pics

Had a awesome day out at Ten Of The Best today, some cracking cars and times.

I took a few pics mainly after it had ended and people were loading up but thought I would share them anyway.

Jonny just used it for a demo run on the handling course, I don't think he planed to use it much as its not exactly the cheapest motor to put miles on !

Lovely car to look round though, well battered but like any World car every area of it is perfect.

Staffi 09-08-2010 05:59 PM

Jonny, how did Paul do in the Sunbeam?? 11s i guess??

Yep I saw him run 11's Pete, doing some nice sideways runs and upsetting some modern machinery.

Does he use this forum as I wanted to ask him about the rear setup on that car as its nothing like I expected but clearly works !

Great car though

hunterlaar 09-08-2010 06:29 PM

Great pictures mate, thanks for sharing them

Yeah it's a cracking car mate AND he can drive it which helps..;-)

Not sure if he comes on here mate tbh, trouble is neither does Karl now so you can't ask him either..

Cracking pics mate :top: love the Sunbeam with the Cossie Lump best :king:

The white Tigra was at USC saturday thrashing anything in sight, I saw it run 12s but he was wheelspinning the full length of the strip :god:

Karl 09-08-2010 11:07 PM

Hi jonny, as Pete said, neither I nor my brother regularly come on this site, but ironically this post appeared top of my search on google for TOTB 9 pics!!

What did you want to know about the rear suspension setup?

We had a good day overall, 4th in rwd qtr with a 11.5@129mph, 3rd in rwd for top speed with a 165mph (winning rwd time was 167, so we were sooo close!! lol), and we were 6th in rwd on the handling which was a dissapointing result, but Paul made a mistake on each of his 5 runs so is'nt a suprise we did'nt finish any higher. Mind you we did do it in 41 secs, which is only 1 second off the fastest pace!

JonnyBravo 09-08-2010 11:53 PM

Great results all round Karl, the handling circuit was so close, tenths seperating most of them expect for that Dax which was in a league of its own !

I've never looked at a Sunbeam so wasn't aware of how the rear was setup, I expect a typical 4,5 or 6 link Escort style setup but are they only 4 linked but with the lower arms being a big boxed item carrying the spring and the dampers looking to be fitted in a standard ish style position instead of upright coilovers.

We noticed it had no 5th link at all, but you can't deny how well it handles so obviously your brother doesn't feel the need to run one or have I missed something ?

Great car though, could watch it all day !

Karl 10-08-2010 12:21 AM

The rear setup is not the same as a mk2 escort, although as you've said most folk would expect it to be.

The sunbeam has a longer wheelbase than a mk2 escort with less body overhang and is in fact a superior base car! The shell is stiffer, the transmission tunnel MASSIVE so it takes any 2wd box, (unlike the escort!) and the engine bay is bigger. It's simply the fact the car is not widely available (along with parts) that it does'nt have the reputation or following of the escort. (Though the sunbeams can be worth a fortune, a genuine works RAC car sold recently for £120,000.)

On our car, the rear live axle uses two diagonal links for lateral control, while two heavy duty trailing arms house the coil spring between them and the chassis, similar in principal to the cosworths. The dampers are mounted at 45 degrees rather than vertically as in a turretted escort.

Whilst our setup would not be suitable for a forest rally car due to lack of suspension travel, (mk2 escorts are turretted to achieve a vertical rear damper to allow long suspension travel whilst avoiding acute damper angles i.e. loss of both damper and spring rate with travel), the sunbeam setup is fantastic as a tarmac rally car.

A lot of folk don't actually realise that nearly all mk2 escort parts are as a direct result of forest rallying, yet their cars never see a forest, hence why people like yourself are suprised by our tarmac setup. Generally speaking on most tarmac events we do, there is little that beats us with RWD, and as long as the track is big enough we beat most 4wd too. (TOTB was a bit too narrow and tight to keep the car neat without driving it sideways!! LOL)

JonnyBravo 10-08-2010 12:49 AM

Thanks very much for that Karl.

I'm building a Mk2 and I do Sprint days with a mate who runs a Starlet so we were suprised to see something a little different on the Sunbeam, clearly it works well though and the pair of us are into Tarmac events not gravel stuff really.

The Starlet is more like the Sunbeam in factory specs but I doubt he will want to go to the expense of changing so much back now its turreted but the link setup is yet to be decided upon.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply !

Karl 10-08-2010 01:20 AM

You're welcome, thanks for taking an interest in our car!

It's also probably worth mentioning that we also run twin front and a single rear anti roll bar (ARB), that are adjustable for stiffness. In general you obtain better results by being softer sprung with suitable ARB's for tarmac use, and I often laugh when looking at mk2 escorts, as many have no ARB's at all, yet are only used on tarmac! Most escort folk buy all the rally parts from people like the squires (who incidently do rally!) yet only ever do tarmac events. Classic example of people being sheep!

We have found that our setup generally produces better traction than a comparable escort. For example we only ever run the car in normal circuit setup for the pod, and have done a 11.0@138mph on non drag tyres. From the car's on board data logging we can achieve 0 - 60 in around 3.5 secs and 0 - 100 in 6 secs, on normal track day tyres, which shows how much traction the car has!

Thanks again Karl, will consider arb's on my own car and the Starlet is nearer to the Sunbeam in terms of setup so we will have a play about with it and see if we can improve it slightly as its strictly used on tarmac sprints

Was Johnny Milner driving the white Celica GT4 at the event? I watched it during the week on ITV4 during their Goodwood Festival coverage - seemed to go extremely well!

Yes Jonny was driving the white one, he took the WRC one out for a bit on the handling circuit for some fun but I missed that, serious motor though !

I believe he came 2nd at Goodwood I think !

Excellent:top:- its good to see a professional rally driver at the event. Shame i missed it now.

I presume the GT4 is his old British Rally Champ car used up to circa 2000? And yes, I think he was 2nd overall at GW but he looked by far the most committed of all the drivers there.

I'm not sure many knew who he was tbh, his driving style should of given away that he's not your average driver though :top:

As for the GT4, do you mean the Corrolla or he Celica, the Corrolla is the car he rallied but I have no idea on he history of the Celica, looks to be a fresh build this year as he has been using it in the Toyota Sprint Series aiming to beat Adrian in the Fensport Celica who sold the Corrolla he did use.
