She used to do it a bit in the pub we drank in when she was about.

Still remember talking to her at the pool table and her telling me about this meeting she had about a group. Who would have thought she'd end up where she is now. Fair play to her

Steve

there are lots. here are a few I pulled off out website...

AfriKids
www.afrikids.org

ICAP will fund the ‘ICAP Training and Eco-Tourism Centre’ in Northern Ghana, providing jobs and training opportunities for local young people. This project will also help sustain AfriKids’ award winning child rights work.

AfriKids was established in 2002 and has since grown rapidly. It works alongside indigenous communities in Ghana to improve the quality of life of the most vulnerable children of all ages including victims of child labour, child trafficking and street children. Its philosophy is to listen to what communities know they need, empower them to make the necessary changes themselves and ensure absolute sustainability.

beat
www.b-eat.co.uk

ICAP’s funding will support the expansion of a Youth Forum - providing opportunities for young people with eating disorders to share their experiences, influence policy makers and help others recover.

Beat is the UK charity supporting people affected by eating disorders and campaigning on their behalf. Founded in 1989, the charity began its work by supporting families through a national network of self-help groups. Today beat also runs the largest website on eating disorders in Europe and has pioneered the use of new technologies in providing help and support. It will run a major campaign promoting prevention work in schools and colleges, which is led by its Youth Forum.

Beating Bowel Cancer
www.beatingbowelcancer.org

ICAP will fund a community pharmacy awareness campaign, to improve the understanding of bowel cancer and encourage earlier diagnosis. A potential 13,000 lives could be saved.

Beating Bowel Cancer is a leading national charity for bowel cancer patients. It works to save lives by encouraging people to communicate frankly about all aspects of the disease. Using its campaigns to increase bowel cancer awareness amongst both medical professionals and the general public, it provides authoritative information about symptoms and the treatment choices available.

Bobby Moore Fund
www.bobbymoorefund.org.uk

ICAP’s donation will fund a three-year research project at the University of London, the results of which could radically change bowel cancer treatment and improve survival rates.

In 1993, the Bobby Moore Fund was set up to honour Bobby’s memory and use his iconic status to save lives. Bobby Moore was just 51 when he died of bowel cancer. Since inception the Fund has raised over £12 million which has helped tackle bowel cancer in several ways. The Charity funds ambitious scientific research to help understand more about bowel cancer and develop new and kinder treatments. It also runs awareness campaigns to improve diagnosis rates and reduce the prevalence of the disease.

British Lung Foundation
www.lunguk.org

ICAP’s donation will fund two top scientists in the UK – a total of six years of cutting-edge medical research towards breakthroughs in the prevention, treatment and cure of lung cancer.

One in seven people in the UK is affected by a lung disease. The British Lung Foundation is the only UK charity working for people across all 43 known lung conditions. It provides easy to understand accessible information, specialist nurses and network support groups and campaigns for positive change in lung health by raising awareness and funding world-class research.

Cruse Bereavement Care
www.cruse.org.uk

ICAP will fund the relaunch of Cruse’s website for bereaved children and young people. www.rd4u.org.uk gives children a safe space to express their grief and share their experiences.

Cruse Bereavement Care is the leading UK charity providing emotional support and practical information to anyone who has been bereaved. Whatever the circumstance, Cruse offers free support and advice to the elderly right through to the youngest children. It has 5,900 trained bereavement support volunteers across England, Wales and Northern Ireland - this year Cruse is celebrating its Golden Jubilee anniversary.

Cardiac Risk in the Young
www.c-r-y.org.uk

With ICAP’s support CRY will test the hearts of 5,000 young people for potentially lethal cardiac conditions and save young lives. Every week in the UK at least 12 young people die of undiagnosed heart conditions.

Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY) promotes and develops heart screening programmes and funds medical research. It supports those young people diagnosed with cardiac conditions and offers bereavement support to families affected by Young Sudden Cardiac Death. Of the 600 young sudden cardiac deaths that occur each year, 80% are in people with no prior symptoms. Identification prior to death is only possible with cardiac screening. CRY also publishes and distributes medical information and it funds fast track services at the CRY Centre for Sports Cardiology, the CRY Centre for Cardiac Pathology and the CRY Inherited Cardiovascular Disease Clinic, all based at leading London hospitals.

Essex Air Ambulance
www.essexairambulance.co.uk

A donation from ICAP will help fund a new visitor centre for this essential emergency service, enabling the helicopter, doctors and paramedics to continue their life-saving missions supporting the people of Essex and Hertfordshire.

Operating seven days a week the Essex Air Ambulance is a helicopter emergency medical service able to access remote areas quickly, bringing highly qualified clinicians and life-saving equipment to patients within the first few vital minutes of an emergency. Patients can be airlifted to the most appropriate hospital quickly capitalising on the aircraft’s advantage of speed and versatility when minutes can make all the difference between life and death.

Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths
www.fsid.org.uk

For a baby to die is a devastating experience for any parent; an experience which makes them understandably extremely anxious when they go on to have another child.

ICAP will donate the funds to support the Foundation’s ‘Care of the Next Infant’ (CONI) programme for twelve months, a programme which provides specialised support to such parents. The Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths was set up in 1971 by a grand- mother desperate to find out why her baby grandson had died. Today this charity is the UK’s only baby charity working to help prevent all sudden and unexplained infant deaths and to promote baby health. It does this through funding research, disseminating safe infant care messages, providing support to families and working with local forensic and medical professionals to improve investigations when a baby dies.

Have a Heart
www.haveaheart.co.uk

ICAP’s support will enable Have a Heart to launch a new Life Education programme for disadvantaged children in England and Wales; ensuring young people can enjoy long and healthy futures by making positive lifestyle choices.

Have a Heart is Heart radio’s charity. It uses the power of radio to make a difference, specialising in funding local grass-roots projects that support disadvantaged people in the communities to which Heart broadcasts. In 2009/10 Have a Heart is focusing on building a better future for children who are vulnerable, face adversity, or are living with a disability or illness. ICAP’s donation will help establish a new health awareness campaign and provide practical learning resources to help children live happier, healthier lives.

Ovarian Cancer Action
www.ovarian.org.uk

ICAP will fund a project at the Ovarian Cancer Action Research Centre investigating tumour resistant treatments.

Ovarian Cancer Action is dedicated to the improvement of women’s chances of surviving ovarian cancer, by funding groundbreaking research and raising awareness of the disease. Ovarian cancer is the most deadly of all the gynaecological cancers and survival rates are currently less than 40%. Very little is known about the causes and it is difficult to diagnose and treat. In 2006 the Charity established the UK’s first dedicated ovarian cancer research centre at Imperial College in London, creating a focus for world-class research seeking better means of detecting, treating and preventing the disease.

PlayPumps International (UK)
www.playpumps.org

ICAP’s donation will fund up to 20 PlayPump water systems in Malawi - Sub-Saharan Africa, which will provide a clean, sustainable source of drinking water for schools and communities.

The PlayPump water system is a child’s roundabout attached to a water pump which draws water from deep underground and stores it in a 2,500 litre tank. A simple tap makes it easy for anyone to draw water (up to 1,400 litres per hour) with less effort than a manually operated pump. As kids play, water pumps. As well as providing a reliable source of water, billboards around the water tank allow for the publication of health service announcements which include messages raising awareness regarding HIV/AIDS.

Teenage Cancer Trust
www.teenagecancertrust.org

ICAP’s support will provide beds for bone marrow transplant patients being treated in the Teenage Cancer Trust’s unit at Southampton General Hospital.

Teenage Cancer Trust builds specialist units in NHS hospitals because it understands that teenage cancer requires specialist care. Every day in the UK, six young people will have to face a cancer diagnosis. Teenagers and young people have a much better chance in their fight against cancer if they are treated by teenage cancer experts, in an environment tailored to their needs. The beds funded by ICAP will give teenagers in long-term isolation their personal space, privacy and a window to the outside world while enabling them to keep in touch with family and friends via a webcam booth.

The Louis Dundas Centre for Children’s Palliative Care
www.gosh.org/louisdundascentre

Support from ICAP will enable this specialist children’s palliative care team to recruit a Nurse Consultant within this new centre of excellence, providing leadership to help develop good practice, education and essential research in this area of paediatric care.

The Louis Dundas Centre for Children’s Palliative Care will be a world-class centre of excellence, bringing together academic research, education and clinical practice in children’s palliative care. The main aim is to ensure that all children with life-limiting and life-threatening illnesses have the access to the highest possible standard of palliative care and pain management. Based at Great Ormond Street Hospital and UCL Institute of Child Health, The Louis Dundas Centre will lead research into children’s palliative care, ensuring that this is then disseminated into best practice, and undertake teaching, both nationally and internationally to make high quality children’s palliative care universally accessible.

The Royal College of Surgeons of England
www.rcseng.ac.uk

ICAP’s donation will support future surgical teams to develop and learn new skills in a simulated operating theatre. The programme teaches and tests team interaction and communication in routine systems and crisis management.

The main aim of The Royal College of Surgeons of England is to improve surgical care through research and education, and vastly improve the survival rates and quality of life for patients. Few people have not benefited from the advances made in surgery and surgery remains the only effective treatment for many diseases including solid cancers of the bowel, breast and lung, organ transplants, victims of trauma, age-related disabilities, and disease or injury requiring reconstruction.

St John Ambulance
www.sja.org.uk/london

6,000 Londoners die every year between the onset of cardiac arrest and arrival at hospital. As part of its commitment to helping combat the high incidence of death from heart disease in the Capital, St John Ambulance London (Prince of Wales’s) District will place over 1,000 defibrillators across the City of London, together with the essential training and support to help minimise the incidence of death from cardiac arrest.

St John Ambulance London (Prince of Wales’s) District has over 4,500 members providing over half a million hours of service annually in London and trains over 40,000 company staff and individuals in first aid and health and safety every year, helping to ensure London is a safer place. As an integral part of London’s day-to-day emergency services St John Ambulance have provided front line first aid services every day of every year for over 100 years. The services extend from specialist paediatric transport of critically ill infants to manning every major sports stadium, major event and concert venue with first aid staff. Youth development also plays a major part, with over 1,400 members under the age of 18.

The Lord’s Taverners
www.lordstaverners.org

To be young and disabled means that your chances of playing sport are almost zero. ICAP’s support will enable 1,200 young people with profound physical and learning disabilities to access one of the few team sports available to them, Table Cricket, as part of The Lord’s Taverners Disability Sports Appeal.

The Lord’s Taverners is one of the UK’s leading youth sports and disability charities and the official charity for recreational cricket. Its mission is to give a ‘sporting chance’ to young people in need; those who through physical, mental, social or economic disadvantage, not of their own making, would otherwise miss out. This is achieved by encouraging participation in youth cricket, particularly in disadvantaged areas such as inner cities. It supports sporting and recreational activities for youngsters with special needs, by donating minibuses, wheelchairs and providing grants for play, sport and sensory equipment.
