i just popped up the garage and whilst there iv been removing some sound deadening out the boot.

also wait until you see the new pics ill have as there is no floor pan hardly left in the drivers side, luckily my mate at gt turbo spares is sending me a floor pan up with seat mounts etc.

on the plus side the inner sill on drivers side is now fitted/welded

not much to report on the welding front this week as my mate is very busy with other jobs, on the other hand i bought the fuel pump and fuel filter brackets home to clean up and paint, i also bought the seat belt storks home to clean up and paint as the bottoms were starting to rust.

onto more interesting things, iv ordered a full set of ferodo ds2500 brake pads which should be the finishing article to my brake system

engine wise i will be installing the brand new nodiz ignition management system which will give huge gains as the standard aei is pants with anything other than standard boost etc. I have also sorted a deal out with someone for a set of roller rockers for a very good price im looking forward to seeing what difference these can make.

Just read some of these posts, brings back memories, i used to run an R5 before i bought the 3dr. Cracking motors if you sort the problems out, i was running a Cosworth T3 turbo and front mount intercooler, wire ringed liners, standard Renault 1.4 head gasket,not a turbo one,2 radiators,yes its possible, polished,ported and matched manifolds with tri cut valve seats,double valve springs,re jetted carb,diy style, side exit on it for a while but after many run ins with the fuzz,they took exception to the flames on the passenger side, i run a full ashley system cos id run them before and when its on full chatter sounds the mutts!!!Will say that the lag on the T3 is huge but when she kicks in, there was no holding her back!!! Thanks,just typing this out has fare cheered my day up!!!might not sell my 3dr now!!!!

ps. Back in they days 1997/98 i was an apprentice engineer so you had to do a lot of diy and making stuff, on a budget and never sayin why??always why the f##k not!!!

Good few year ago i knew a boy who'd bought a genuine Dimma 5 (metal winged) No 26 i think, he was building it as a Turbo 2 with the fuel injected version in the back, ill try an get hold of him an get some pics!!!

haha, it did lag, yeah it was a case of feeding it the gears when she did get goin, musta bn bout just over 4k then up to just over 7k in no time, bit numb about town but good on the "open road"!!At 17 years old an every1 else in mark 2 feestys, competition wasnt there like now, u get a bloody skoda fabia vrs "diesel" snarling at ur mirror!!! and getting good mpg!!!lol!!think am getting 2 old for this sh1t!!haha

bit of an update, removed my tubular manifold as iv sold it to a guy local to me. i want go back to standard manifold as it sounds so much better.

also iv removed my turbo and will be sending it to wilky to get a billet comp wheel fitted look forward to seeing what it can do

if there was ever an exmaple of dont judge a book by its cover then this is it, cant stress how important it is to really check over an old classic when buying.

cheers for that it would of worked out hell of alot cheaper to reshell it but wheres the fun in that, ill know its one solid car for years to come this way.

Fair play to you mate for doing this to this car giving it a new lease of life ! Cos come 10/20 years down the line no 1 will no what a classic reny 5 will be but then tucked away will be the 1's that got saved instead of broken up for parts or just scrapped .. Honestly I really hope you get it done and it puts a smile on your face cos I no my old 1 did every time I went out in it !

Good on you mate keep up the good work . And mine was running 202 brake only thing I didn't like was the guy that built it put a paddle clutch in it for the drag strip and it was a nightmare when you was coming up to and leaving the traffic lights was a mint little car tho I loved it and miss it .

defo will fella, they are such a different beast once up around the 200bhp mark and the 1/4 mile times prove it, iv been looking on the rtoc 1/4 boards to see where about my car should be at when its sorted and it looks like a very low 12 sec

iv gotta fit a paddle friction plate into my clutch as the current uprated one can only handle max of 220lb/ft

Yeh there good for the strip mate but for normall round town use there horrible I never had mine on the strip so don't no what time it would do but the lad that built it went down at York a few times but don't no what time it put down .. But when I drove it it felt really quick when you could get power down just lit tires up all the time .. And it had the dreaded in car adjustable boost witch ended up been the death of it hahaha

oh my the dreaded engine blower, one thing id never have in my car just set the boost n have done, although i bet if i was 21 again id be wanting one and blowing it up in no time haha

mine is running over 230bhp now by how much we will see in april after the dyno session, will gain a shed load of torque with the nodiz mappable ignition

230 is more then enough to wipe most things off the lights in 1 of them .

You will have to put picture on of the print outs when its been done be nice to see what it's running

of course matey, ill be popping back to wgt before fitting the nodiz to have another power run as its certainly gained some poke since sorting the fuelling and fitting a full 2.5" bore turbo back system (old system 2") and fitted bjr 2.5" downpipe/elbow.

well i finally went up to see my car for the first time in 2013 tbh its not far off at all now, all the floor pan is finished, drivers inner/outter sill is finished, new jacking point is on.
my mate has discovered another hole pretty high up in drivers footwell which will of course be sorted.

just gotta fit the new drivers door and then we can start thinking of getting the car in the paintshop.

I'm new here. Really enjoyed reading your thread. Very impressed with all your hard work. I had a Renault 11 Turbo with the C1J engine which I used to take to the Pod from 1992 onwards. At one time I fitted a T3 turbo from a Renault 18 Turbo, very laggy, but didn't lose boost between gear changes. When I fitted a Dump valve it lost boost between gears and was horrible, much better without it. I now have the engine in an MG Midget mated to a Type 9 gearbox, an ongoing project which is not running yet. I have fitted throttle bodies from a Suzuki GSXR1000 with twin injectors per cylinder and have an Emerald ECU to be fitted when I have time.

I know what you mean about the standard manifold sounding better. The Tubular manifold has equal length headers which is supposed to even out the engine pulses to the turbo, whilst originally they are all different lengths. The fact they are all different lengths gives the engine the unique warble, almost like an Impreza. I asked Ktec to supply me all the components to make my own tubular manifold and I made sure they all took the shortest route to the turbo to try and keep the original sound as best as I could.

bet that is a stunner in a midget do you do any hillclimbs etc? yeah i really didnt rate the tubular manifold at all if im honest there was no difference in spool up time or power as far as i could tell.

keep your eyes peeled on here for the next batch of updates as it will start to get very interesting

Turbomidget

It will be interesting to see how it sounds and goes one day, but time is very limited. I only used to take the Renault 11 to Santa Pod and Avon Park, but that was a long time ago now. I remember I fitted the turbo gear set into a Renault GTX gearbox to increase final drive as I was hitting the Rev limiter in 4th just before the line. Renault 11 Turbos only had a 6200 limit.

The standard manifold has small runners so the exhaust pulses will be moving much faster than in a tubular manifold. It is interesting what you say though, I would expect spool to be better with the standard manifold, but possibly restrictive for outright power. I had to make a manifold in my case as the turbo was in completely the wrong place. I have put a couple of pictures in my profile to show what it looks like.

When the engine was pushed to the limit I burned a hole through the head gasket and another time cracked a liner in number 4 cylinder due to detonation. I know some people used to make a water connection to the other side of the head, on the existing banking plate, to remove the hot water which causes the problem.

Will be interested to see your progress, the power outputs and 1/4 mile times are way ahead of anything anyone managed in the 90's. Quite incredible for such a small old motor.
