plans for over the coming autumn/winter

As some of you might know iv now started working on saturdays with justin (ex ep motorsport partner) down at automedics (am motorsport) and this has an added bonus of a 10% discount for any Passionford member all you have to do is quote my name

so as of now im going be getting alot more involved with doing the work on my car and learning alot more with it.
Currently my car is down at automedics due to me removing the turbo to get a bigger turbine wheel (t28) machined into my .63 t2 housing to match up with the t28 comp side , also my bloody drivers side wheel bearing give up after around 220-230 miles so mike (GT Turbo spares) sent me a new one up for half price (top fella).
I will receive the turbo back this coming week so that will be fitted along with the wheel bearing and given its 1st proper test at the weekend as im off to the rsoc national day at donington park might find a few rs to have a play with

Its then off to the PFC Featured RTOC Dyno day @ WGT next month that iv organised to see what it makes which im really looking forward to. after that its a case of enjoying the car before the winter sets in, once its December my car is coming off the road and staying inside at automedics so we can do a full strip down of the car fit a new bonnet and drivers door then sort all the bodywork out also going for a full polybush set to replace the standard bushes and want a new pair of rear shocks (possibly koni)
Engine wise were going to take the head off and fit a set of group a valves from prima racing and an external wastegate plus water injection. we are going to inspect the bottom end to see how the liners, pistons and rings look if they look a bit tired then they will be replaced also.

hoping to get the car on track and on the 1/4 mile scene as much as poss next year and ill also obviously be organising more dyno days.

well after a few delays we finally fitted my new turbo on friday, and my god what a difference its made, the car was quick before but now its in a total different league it actually took me by surprise on how quick it was eg spinning the wheels in 3rd in the dry . Only gained around 200rpm lag which i am impressed with seeing as iv gone from a t2 turbine in the .63 t2 housing up to a t28 turbine and shaft.
so its now all systems go for next months dyno day at wgt cant wait to see how it goes

having a pig of a time with my car atm seems like it doesnt like going anywhere anymore lol,
fitted a new hub and bearing yesterday morning went out for a little blast up the d road and then back to pick my mrs up to go out for the day.
Needless to say we got 5 mins up the road from mine then a big snap/bang noise and clutch pedal went to the floor , so bonnet up and checked the cable which was still in place then i looks in the drivers side footwell and a piece of the adjuster was on the floor cleanly snapped (this thing was bought new and has covered around 300-350 miles).
So i managed to drive the car home without a clutch and am now awaiting a replacement adjuster was really gutted yesterday and for the first time said i was prepared to sort it and sell it after the dyno day this month and i actually still feel the same way this morning

new enthusiasm has been fount still yet to fit new clutch ratchet as i was otherwise occupied this wkend.
but needless to say it will be fitted one night this week after work and im booking next thursday/friday off work to get the car ready for the dyno day on the 22nd.
Im also currently watching an all in one 2.5" downpipe/elbow which are so much better then even my set up which is 2.5" downpipe and bored out elbow (the elbow is so restrictive its unreal). If i do win this im then going have to get a full 2.5" system made up by longlife exhausts sometime over this coming winter.

what is the spec of your car and how many gearboxes and heads gaskets have you had to do lol awesome little cars still havent gone out in marks always busy but like to see his car against mine one day ( he will win) im in a evo 8 pushing 388bhp and 386lbft so he will leave me behind.

whats next for your r5?

not blown one headgasket only time iv replaced them is when iv had the head off to do work , had one new gearbox but mine was feckered when i bought it lol.

spec of mine is as follows

re-jetted carb (am motorsport)
ramair induction kit
scorpion exhaust system 4" tailpipe
tubular manifold
cosworth 2wd fmic
am motorsport ported head
catcams 285 cam and vernier
ktec 2.5" downpipe
ported inlet manifold
gt motorsport ported turbo elbow
t28/t2.63 turbo (cossie t3 comp housing,t28 pulsar comp wheel,.63 t2 ex housing with t28 shaft and turbine machined into it) 23psi

power is est around 230-240 think ill turn the boost up on dyno day as only hitting 11afr on full boost so got some room for an increase

should be interesting as i know a proper set up evo dont hang about although iv seen off quite a few of them and subarus (private land officer)

next is a winter project going to strip the car down and get the bodywork a1 condition buy any new parts that i can to freshen it up.

going to polybush it, fit group a exhaust valves in the head and also get the downpipe/elbow iv bought fitted along with a full 2.5" system made by longlife, thinking about water/meth injection and possibly a little shot of nos

did you notice a lot of difference when you fitted the tubular manifold? i know last time i spoke to mark he was think about fitting one even thou he had tried not to go down that route. Oli went down the route of injection i think or he was looking into it, havent spoken in a while. I liked james ( marks brothers) phase 1 that was nice with the white and black chequers on borbet wheels.

get a vid up of your dyno run be nice to see and hear it.

like i said mark would beat me easy i think but would like to try might have to go see him and have some fun.

tbh mate i didnt notice any diff in spool up/lag etc it certainly changed the exhaust note. i couldnt give an answer if it improved over standard as i had alot of head work and inlet ported at the same time as i fitted the manifold.

there will defo be vids of the dyno day thats for sure.

i think oli does have injection its a lot of money to convert and is prob easier dropping a 172 engine in and converting that to forced induction.

and im totally with you on the seat situation they actually come with the car, but my idea for over the winter is to get them re trimmed in the r5gtt o.e spec pattern

yes mate clio turbines

had a fantastic day yesterday at the rtoc dyno day at wgt some really impressive cars ran on the day least to mention scoffs new world record of 749bhp and also glenns 402bhp efi converted c1j.
was over the moon with my car as it made 230bhp and 213.2 lb/ft @ 24psi which was the highest figure carb fed c1j on the day and this was with it running mega rich id imagine i can squeeze another 5-10bhp just by leaning the carb out.

pic of my graph the old lines are from my old 178bhp run

so then guys i suppose your probably wondering where ill go with the car next eg tuning etc well firstly iv just got this big jim racing 2.5" all in one downpipe/elbow which gets rid of that bloody restrictive turbo elbow.

this will be fitted and mated to a brand new full 2.5" longlife system with 3.5" tailpipe. the reports i here on the bjr downpipe are really good.

we are also going to be fitting group a valves into my cylinder head which should work great with the ported head, cam and new exhaust set up all helping get the gasses through quicker and id imagine could give me around 245bhp at same boost level. Looking at water/meth injection as well as were looking at running 28-30psi boost for 1/4 mile events etc.

Bottom end was rebuilt just over 2k ago, with pistons, rings, liners all gaskets plus new sump, uprated headgasket new timing chain/tensioner and alternator belt, also got new plugs/leads and dizzy cap/rotor i went a bit overkill but i wanted to freshen it up.

bit of a boring update compared to normal but just had my insurance renewal through off footman james at £393 (classic policy) was £324 last year, i then noticed that my policy states 6000 miles which is way too many.
So i called them up stated i wanted to change that to 3000 miles and i couldnt believe the difference £204.42.
Im absolutely over the moon i even rang around a few other companies eg graham sykes and hic, sykes wanted £363 and hic £406

gotta love classic policies

nice 1 fella

the engine you are referring to is the b18ft (1.7 turbo) not much has been developed for that engine but a good benefit from it is that its efi rather than carb. tbh these cars are quick on the standard t2 running around 15psi
