mk5 escort 1.4 CVH
just bought a K plate mk5 escort with a puny 1.4 cvh lump and was wondering whats the best plan of attack with the tappets rattling?
also what other engines can i use if mine goes bang
i know the car is carbed so changing the loom is out the question any ideas?
and finally how easy would it be to fit power steering as i only have little arms and the car hasnt got it?
any help would be really really grateful
cheers Ann

the tappets can be adjusted its an easy job.the steering was heavy on my escort when i had one i found pumping the tyres up to 40psi in the front was alot cheaper than fitting pas lol

i would like to no how they can be adjusted..... cvhs ( not all but most ) had hydraulic tappets, which as far as i was aware are not adjustable.
unfortunatly they would have to be replaced, or if you are realy tight for cash you could clean them.
engine wise u could put in a 1.6 cvh from an xr3 or any 1.6 cvh escort realy, with little work

im not a big fan of engine flush. it can bring up chunks and block the filter or bring up metal swarf and do more damage than its worth..
change the tappets over, but first run the engine until its luke warm, and then drain the oil ( change the filter obviously ) then do the tappets, put it all back together fill it up with oil and runn it at about 2000rpm for a minute or to.
to be honest it will sound like absolute shite to start with as the tappets will not hav built up pressure
hope this helps

cheers for the help people really helped
done a filter and oil change and flushed the system out aswell
according to the other half the oil was well sludgy
filter change, flush and new oil resulting in a smoother running CVH
the plan next is to save some penny's then go on the hunt for a RS turbo engine and loom

Legend
They also put a 1.8 cvh in the sierra if you want to stick that way.
AND, pretty rare in this country, but they did a 1.9 long block cvh in the American escort.
Admittedly the engines are dear and most are modded to run low CR for turbos, but imagine one of those bad boys on twin 45's

i've got a large collection of escorts .. (4 and a fiesta) and i have to say my current run about the 1.4 cvh (k plated) is the worst i've ever had... first one without PAS, cvh tappets are hydraulic but can be shimmed, they are adjustable, the 1.8 cvh is so different from the 1.6/1.4 but is worse for power tuning etc than its lighter 1.6 brother
as for 1.9's ive gota mk4 3i with a n/a 1.9 on mfi... goes like stink
rather than an rst you could have a 1.8 zetec or a 2.0 for less money
