Are there any Renault experts "In De House"
Evening all,
wondered if there were any Renault experts in the house this evening. Trying to help my brother out with his 1.6 Grand Scenic.
At intermittent times the top end of the engine makes a rattling noise, that I would describe as a hydraulic lifter noise. However I am conscious that the garage that have looked at the car had recently changed the dephaser unit. Once incorrectly (He hadnt used a locking tool) then had a new one fitted when this failed.
Had a look at some youtube clips and the noise of a failed lifter and Dephaser issue sound similar. Is there a hard set way we can identify the cause of the noise so we can dispute with the Garage.
We are looking to have a Renault garage look over this tomorrow.
Cheers

normally the pulleys fail as per most gel/oil VVT systems
renault in particular, regardless of propper timing tools they are pretty fool proof to fit
genuine pulleys should only be used, copy ones are not worth a wank, i do loads of these
normally cure the hydraulic operated versions.
oil condition and regular servicing is vital, never seen one do a set or individual lifters, ever
not saying it isnt possible though.
Sean.

just finding my feet
Dephaser sounds like a proper hard top end knock, my Clio has been doing it for almost 2 years now, I can't bring my self to spend 500 quid on a car worth 700

Works and plays on track
As Ginge says, dephaser almost makes it sound like a diesel, not really like tappets/lifters.
Plus it only really happens when the engine is warm HTH.
