Default Turbo diesel conversion.... Help please =)

Hi there..........

I own a 1990 H reg escort combi van. Its got a 1.8 D normally aspirated engine. I want something a bit pokier but keeping it as a diesel, ive had a look through a few threads but they have been for converting the mk5 escort vans to 1.8 TD. So my question to you guys is how easily will it go into my mk4?

Also.....

A guy commented on one thread and said go for the 90 BHP TD engine with the intercooler, adjust the fueling and raise the boost. So if i fitted a front mount intercooler, raised the fuel pressure and boost what sort of power increase could i be looking for? Would it make a difference if i had a straight through downpipe and exhaust on it aswell?

Want to keep it as a diesel for authenticity, but i want to have a fairly quick diesel. Money is no object on this one within reason guys =)

Thank you in advance for your help =)

i converted my combi to tdi power a couple years back

its an easy enough job , from memory you need to cut and shut the downpipe and swap the engine mounts and flywheel then just a few other bits and bobs as you go , the wiring on the fuel advance took a bit of working out as did the immobilised pump !

the best engine to use is a TDi escort engine not the TD as the tdi has a bigger turbo / pump and intercooler it b

bolts upto the mk4 gearbox too

if you go for it i will have a look at how i got it wired so it runs smooth when cold etc

with the pump wound out you can get around 110-120 bhp (90 standard but it gets a bit smokey , best to just tweak the pump and you will have around 100 bhp and plenty of torque ,mine will piss all over my XR3i and keeps up with a standard RS turbo , upto 80 mph anyway then the gearing is too low , also get 35 MPG when driving like a loon and 50 MPG when i behave !

few pics of it:

also , in my opinion its not worth fitting a front mount IC as the gains aren't that high and diesels always run a lot better when warm and the straight through exhaust can be a bit loud but does let it rev quicker

they dont need back pressure like a petrol but it can start to kill the turbo seals when there is little back pressure , i run a totally unsilenced side exit on mine and have done 10k miles on it without an issue other than the noise !! although its not too loud and never been stopped with it , have done about 25k miles with that engine in now too

Thanks alot for that mate, Do appreciate it =)

I knew somebody would be able to help me

Right, i have just been given an engine. Its an early TD engine, its come out of a sierra pick-up and its done 50,000 miles, apparently its the 90 bhp engine, a p100 lump or something? not to sure if thats makes any sense to you?

And the exhaust is mine aswell if i want it. So going to grab that so i can cut it about and make it work with mine as the one on mine at the moment is semi straight through.

Can a Dump valve be used on it when i fit the engine?

Sounds silly but i want it to sound nice aswell lol

Thanks alot mate

the p100 diesel is an odd one , it basicaly the same engine as all the TD's but with a better pump and turbo on !

it will fit but will probably need a few things changing like mounts , alternator bracket , thermastat housing , flywheel , bottom pulley , downpipe from turbo , sump

when you get the existing engine out just put them side by side and go around the TD lump and make it look like the one thats come out but with a turbo stuck to it !

everything is interchangable between the 2 engines so its just a case of seeing what is different

as for the dumpvalve - a convenctional DV wont work as the intake never goes into vacumm (which is required to open the valve) , its possible to fit a electonicaly opening valve and a switch under the clutch but they are pointless and sound crap

i was playing about with mine and can get turbo chatter by fitting a throttle body from a petrol where the IC sits and closing it with a cable , it forces the air thats produced to go back through the turbo and causes chatter , again totally pointless and was soon put back to norm !!

Thats good then dude, atleast you have heard of it lol

So could be a better engine in theory then if the pump and turbo is better? Any idea on what bhp it will be and could be with the mods considering this?

Ok then, definately the best way to do it haha make sure ive got everything that way =)

Will my gearbox go straight on? I have also been given by somebody else, a B5 gearbox, i think from and efi turbo lump. Would this fit?

I also see that somebody fitted a sierra cossie T3 turbo on one, You think this would be any good?

Ok then will give that one a miss lol

Thanks for all your help dude =)

its still the same engine but with the 'TDI' turbo and pump on (i think !)

will be around 90 bhp , maybe just under but with a IC fitted will def be 90 in standard form then the same as mentioned before with the tweaking the pump

fitting a T3 is possible but wont give you any more power in theory as a diesel runs with an excess of air anyway , its the fuel that gives power , the turbo is basicaly an emmisions controller to keep smoke down

in theory if you fitted something like a T3 and run it at say 20-25 psi with the fuel regualtor wound completly out then you could get around 130 bhp with little smoke BUT the head gasket would soon start to blow , the IC elbow with split and so on as they arent made to run that sort of pressure and volumes of air (plus fuel economy would be crap) , i have a bleed valve on my standard turbo for when its due a MOT , i wind it out completly for the test to dilute the emmisions then put it back after but even this pressurises the header tank

your original gearbox will fit straight on if you use your flywheel and clutch too , if the box you have been given is from a RS turbo then it should have a LSD fitted and is the better box , this will also bolt staright up and driveshafts also fit no probs
